Joey got out of the passenger seat of Dawson’s Dad’s car. It was raining heavily, and darkness had began to close in. And here they were stuck on the side of some road. They’d had a great day in Boston, and Dawson had begun to drive them home. About an hour into the trip, he’d had to pull over, because they’d got a flat tire. The guys had got out to go and put on the spare. Only then, Dawson realized that they were using the spare. Joey walked over to the boys, and stood with her hands on her hips.

“I can’t believe you didn’t get another one, Dawson. Bessie is gonna flip if we’re late!” she yelled. Dawson sighed, and ran his hands through his hair.

“I’m sorry, ok? How many more times can I apologize? I know I should have checked that we had a spare, but I didn’t.”

“How stupid can you get? We’re now stuck here in the middle of God knows where, with no shelter from this rain.” Pacey, who was amused at the banter between his best friends, hugged her, and kissed the top of her head.

“Now, now, Jo. It was a mistake. We’ll be fine. We’ll find a motel somewhere, and call Bessie so she knows we’re OK. In the morning, we’ll get someone to bring a tire to us. It’ll be OK.” She nodded and looked up at him, smiling. He smiled back. Dawson groaned.

“Guys? Do you have to do this in front of me?” he asked.

“Yup. It’s your pay back for forgetting a spare,” Joey teased, kissing Pacey on the lips.

The three managed to find a motel, and walked up to the front desk. They were all soaking wet, having walked for 20 minutes in the pouring rain.

“Excuse me,” Pacey asked the man behind the desk. “Have you got three single rooms? Our car broke down and we need somewhere to stay the night.”

“I’m sorry, sir,” the man replied. “We have no single rooms left. We have a double and a twin room, if that would be OK.” Pacey looked at Dawson, and then at Joey.

“I could take the double, and you two could have the twin room,” Joey suggested. Dawson nodded.

“OK, that’ll be fine. How much will that be?” Pacey asked.

“50 dollars, please.” Pacey got out his wallet, and counted out five 10 dollar notes. “Thank you. could you sign the guestbook please?” Pacey duly signed for the twin room, and Joey signed for the double. The three then went to their rooms.

Pacey smiled to himself. Of course, he was facing Joey and Dawson, so it looked like he was smiling at them.

“What?” Joey demanded.

“nothing,” Pacey replied. “I was just thinking how great today’s been. Thanks. You guys are the best!”

“Happy Birthday, Pacey,” Dawson said.

“I’d better go phone Bess,” Joey remembered. “I’ll go do it now, then I’m going to bed. I’m exhausted. Night guys,” she said, as she dropped a kiss on Pacey’s head, and walked out of the room. Pacey looked after her.

“Pacey? You still there?” Dawson teased.

“Yup. Sorry, I was just thinking…”

“OK! don’t need to know!” Dawson called out. Pacey grinned.

“Look, Dawson. I’m pretty tired too. Why don’t we just crash now?” Dawson agreed, and the two took off their shoes, and lay in their beds. Dawson fell asleep within a few minutes, but Pacey couldn’t. He stared out into the darkness that filled the room.

Dawson woke groggily to the beam of light that shone into the room. He sat up in bed, unable to focus properly. Pacey was stood at the door, obviously just about to leave the room.

“I’m just gonna check she’s OK,” Pacey explained. Dawson grunted a response, and lay back down. Pacey carefully closed the door behind him.

Joey giggled as she opened the door to find Pacey there. She too had been unable to sleep. She let him in, and he sat on her bed. She sat beside him.

“Sorry, Jo. It’s just…I couldn’t sleep. I wanted to thank you. not just for today, but for all this. For you and me. I want to thank you for being the one person I love, for all the kisses you give me that make me feel like I’m the most special person in the world. But most of all, I want to thank you for always being there…” Pacey was silenced by Joey kissing him deeply on the lips.

“Pacey, there’s something I need to tell you,” she whispered when they finally broke apart.

“What?” Pacey asked, worried.

“I love you,” Joey replied softly. Pacey grinned.

“Really?” Joey nodded. “Wow!” He leaned forward, and kissed her. His weight meant she fell backwards, so she was lying on the bed with him on top of her. Pacey was surprised, but let his hands run lightly over her body. Joey felt tingles at his touch, which scared her. He snuck his hand under her blouse, and raised it so he was stroking the lace of her bra.

“Pacey,” she said. He flew back, and rolled off her.

“I’m so sorry, Joey. God! I promised myself not to push you into anything. I’m so sorry,” he pleaded. Joey’s face broke into a smile.

“I wasn’t about to say that. I was gonna ask if you had anything?”

“What do you mean?” he asked, not following her.

“Pacey, I think I’m ready.” Pacey mouth dropped open.

“You mean it? Really?” She nodded in response.

“I want tonight to be my first time, Pacey. I want you to be my first…” Joey didn’t get to finish her speech. Pacey ran into the small en suite. “Pacey? What are you doing?” she called out, scared. He came back into the room.

In his hand was a small, flat square packet. He held it up.

“I saw these in our bathroom,” he said, grinning. “I love you, Joey,” he said, looking at her.

“You’d better,” she said. He sat back down on the bed. She sat up. He ran his thumb along her lower lip. Then he kissed her gently. In that instant, Pacey knew true love. The love that everyone is looking for. He found it in Josephine Potter, as she looked at him with her trusting and unquestioning eyes.

Dawson frowned to himself. It was morning, yet Pacey was not in his bed. He thought he’d go and see if Joey knew where he was. He knocked on her room’s door and waited for someone to answer it. He was more than slightly surprised to see Pacey when the door opened. He raised his eyebrows, an action that didn’t surprise Pacey.

“Hey, Dawson. Come in,” Pacey announced. “Joey’s just getting ready in the bathroom, then we’d better get someone’s parents to rescue us!” Dawson nodded, and entered the room.

“So, where did you go?” Dawson asked.

“What?” Pacey asked.

“You left our room to check on Joey, and you weren’t in your bed when I woke this morning!” Dawson explained. Pacey blushed slightly, and shuffled his feet. “Oh!” Dawson exclaimed.

“Yeah…” Pacey acknowledged. Just then, Joey came back into the room, smiling.

“Hey, Dawson. You ready to go?” she asked breezily. Dawson nodded silently, still slightly shocked. He led the others out of the room, and phoned his Dad to come and rescue them.

That evening, Joey sighed aloud. She was frustrated with Dawson. They were sat in his room, watching movies, but she could tell he was thinking about something else.

“What is it, Dawson?” she asked quietly. Dawson turned to face her, and then turned off the video. “Come on, we said we’d talk about anything. Anything. Just say what you want to.” Dawson licked his lips nervously.

“You and Pacey slept together last night, didn’t you?” he asked finally. Joey smiled.

“Yes. Is that what you want to talk about?”

“Yeah…it’s just that that’s something that you’ve done and I haven’t. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want details, just info.” Dawson blushed slightly.

“don’t be embarrassed,” Joey warned him. “If you’re my friend, then I’m gonna want to talk about this with you, too. What do you want to know?”

“Well…were you nervous? How did you know it was the right time?” Dawson asked.

“Yeah, I was nervous, but it just seemed so right. I told him I loved him, then we were making out, and then one thing led to another…I really care for him, Dawson. And last night was wonderful.”

“What did it feel like?”

“Well, I don’t know if the physical descriptions are gonna be much use to you, but the emotions…God! I’ve never felt so close to anyone in my life. It was like there was this huge bond between us. And now, I miss him. I want to be with him all the time…It felt so good…” Joey trailed off.

“Jo? I’m glad. Glad that you feel able to tell me all this. And glad that you’re so happy. You deserve it. More than anyone I know,” Dawson said gently.

Suddenly, Joey started to laugh uncontrollably. “What?” Dawson said, smiling at the sight.

“I just realized that I did it with Pacey! Of all people, Pacey! My arch enemy!” she managed between laughs. Dawson began to laugh too.

“You’re mad, Joey,” he said.
