Dawson’s Announcement: Did ya’ll hear Meredith Monroe is engaged? Congratulations, Meredith!! :)

Have you ever loved somebody so much
It makes you cry
Have you ever needed something so bad
You can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words
but they don’t come out right
Have you ever, have you ever..

“Ooh. That is really, really cold.” Joey grimaced a bit at the ooey gel they were smearing on her stomach. Dawson stood about five feet away from the table she was lying on, as if he was afraid the baby was going to jump off the sonogram screen and bite.

“Dawson..Dawson Leery..Hello? Earth to Dawson?”

Joey waved her hand at him.

“Wha--What is it Jo? Is something wrong? Did I miss something?” He stepped toward her hesitantly.

“Dawson, are you going to be okay?” Joey noticed he had a very pale look on his face. “You look like I’ve looked every morning this week. You're not the pregnant one here, remember?”

Dawson gave a little half hearted chuckly. “Uh, huh..” Joey began to get annoyed.

“You know, Dawson, if you can’t get past your post pubescent hang ups, I can always ask your mom to come in. I mean she’s right out in the waiting room...”

“No!” Dawson said louder than he meant to. The nurse preparing the sonogram glared at him.

“Is he going to be okay?” She asked Joey.

“Probably not. You may want to prepare an artificial respiration kit.” Joey looked over scathingly at her boyfriend, who looked as though he were preparing to enter combat. The nurse smiled, her face softening. She patted Joey’s hand a little.

“Well, the doctor will be in if you give her a few minutes.” She looked at Dawson once more, a bit worridly. “If he passes out, just push the call button.” It was Dawson’s turn to glare at the nurses back as she walked out of the room.

“Dawson--c’mere.” Joey waved him over. He gingerly sat on the very edge of the table she was lying on.

“It’s okay. Believe me, I know this is highly terrifying, but really. It’s just a machine. Wait till were in the delivery room and I try to murder you.” She smiled wickedly at Dawson, who managed a small smile in return.

“Who’s next, Amy?” Dr. Layne Petterson asked her head nurse.

“Room three. It’s a young couple. Boyfriend and girlfriend. Sixteen.” The doctor sighed. She was beginning to get them younger and younger every day. She opened the door, Amy following behind, to find a good looking young man, stroking an intelligent looking young girl’s hand. They both looked terrified, especially the boy. His eye’s were as wide as a deer’s caught in headlights.

“Joshepine?” The doctor asked.

“Don’t call her that,” said Dawson automatically.

The docor looked confused.

“As my dofus boyfriend pointed out so kindly, I prefer to be called Joey.” Dawson sort of glanced about the room, not looking anyone in the face. He caught a glimpse of a reproductive organ chart, and flushed a deep crimson red. Meanwhile Dr. Petterson had hooked up the sonogram and turned it on.

“Dawson..” Joey said very quietly, as the doctor rubbed the small white joystick over her stomach.

“Look..” On the black and white screen beside the doctor was a small, small form.

“Is..is, that it?” Dawson asked. The doctor smiled.

“Yep, that’s it. That’s your baby in there.”

“Oh, my god,” Joey teared up a bit, and covered her mouth. “Look at her,” She said to Dawson. “That’s our baby.”

“That’s our baby,” Dawson repeated. “Our baby.”

Then, working on a bit of a delay, he responded to her earlier comment. “Hey! Who say’s this is going to be a girl, Josephine?” He said with mock offense.

“I did, Oompa Loompa!” Dr. Petterson looked at the two young things in front of her, still able to joke. She wondered if they had any idea what they were getting in to.

“Where are Dawson and Joey? Jo wasn’t in Chem, and Dawson wasn’t in English.” Andie said as she set her lunch bag down on the cafeteria table.

“Well, that’s a fine good day to you.” Her boyfriend grinned. She kissed him on the lips, very lightly.

“Better?” She smiled coyley.

“Better,” Pacey bit into a french fry. “Last I heard the two love birds had a doctor's appointment this morning.”

“Oh, yeah. With the obgyn, right?” Andie made a face. Pacey lowered his voice and leaned toward her.

“Why don’t you tell the whole world?” Andie looked around at all the young, gossip hungry floozies surrounding her.

“Oops. Sorry. So how are they doing? I haven’t talked to Joey since I bought her the test on Saturday morning.” Pacey shook his head.

“Man, McPhee. I don’t know. He’s scared as hell, she is pretending she isn’t. They aren’t having very serious discussions about what they’re going to do with the baby when it’s born. I think their just trying to pretend it’s not happening. Which will work until Joey begins to look like Shamu.” Andie slapped him.

“Pacey Witter! This is a serious, life altering thing here...” She suddenly shut up.

“What’s wrong, McPhee? Out of big words? Need to check the thesaurus?” She shook her head.

“No, here they come.” She nodded her head towards the two who had just entered the cafeteria. She noted how run down Joey looked. The couple smiled at Dawson and Joey as they sat down in the empty chairs.

“Hey,” said Andie.

“Hey,” said Joey. The air was tight with tension.

No one was sure which subjects were off limits and which would be too frivilous to warrant the situation.

“So..”Said Andie. “How was the appointment?” Joey lowered the bottle of water she was drinking from her lips and looked over at Dawson, who returned the look. She capped the bottle and said quietly “Fine.”

“Well, I mean, what did..”

“You know, Andie, we’d really rather not talk about it,” Said Joey shortly.

“Okay..”Andie said slowly. “Well, have you guys started studying for the P-SAT’s yet? You know how important SAT’s will be to your future..”Andie looked back and forth between Dawson and Joey expectantly and then faltered as the two looked down. She realized suddenly that they had no idea what the future would hold for them. If they kept the baby, they would most likely not be able to go to college. Obviously P-SAT’s weren’t a top priority for them right now.

“Oh, I’m sorry..I forgot for a second. I mean of course the test’s are important, and I’m sure their important to you too, but I mean, you definatly have other stuff and I..” Pacey clamped a hand over his girlfriend’s mouth. He chuckled tightly.

“Don’t you just love her? C’mon Andie, we need to go talk to...somebody. See ya guys later.” They left the cafeteria, Pacey’s hand still clamped over Andie’s mouth. Joey rubbed her eyes as Dawson groaned and began to bang his head off the table.

“Stop that,” Said Joey. “You can’t afford to waste the brain cells.” Dawson looked up at her, wounded. She picked up her sandwich and unwrapped it. She took a bite as he put his head back into his hands.

Their relationship had changed since that day at lunch. Two weeks later things were still strained between Dawson and Joey. She had been pulling away, not spending the night. She wouldn’t let him touch her or hold her. When he asked her why she’d just shrug.

One of Joey’s biggest problems was that she just didn’t feel right. The doctor said it was normal to feel uncomfortable, but she was always tired and the other day she had been pouring herself a glass of orange juice and she had gotten so dizzy she had to lie down for an hour.

Another thing was that Dawson wanted to talk about marriage, and adoption, and Parent Student housing for christ’s sake. And all Joey wanted was to just live her life normally for a couple more weeks before that was completley impossible.

With all the tension between them, Joey had neglected to mention her dizzy spells to Dawson.

* * * * *

“Jo! Hey! Wait up!” Dawson called out to Joey down the hall. She stopped wearily leaning against a bank of lockers. “How you doing?” He asked, when he had reached her.

“Okay,”She said slowly. “Listen Dawson, I want to apologize for the bitchiness recently.” She gave her famous half smile. “It must be all the hormones or some..” All of a sudden Joey trailed off. She slumped a bit, and Dawson leaned forward to grab her. Students surrounded the fallen girl and her knight in shining armour boyfriend.

“Somebody get the nurse!” He yelled hysterically.

“Joey! Jo!” He began to lightly slap at her face.

The crowds whispered around him. What was wrong with her? Was she dying or something? Dawson looked around frantically in the mass confusion. Where was the damn nurse? What the hell was taking her so long? Everything was blurry to him. Suddenly the large, hulking nurse pushed through the gawking teenagers toward Dawson and the unconcious Joey. She knelt to take her pulse, while reassuring Dawson. “An ambulence is on it’s way.”

The next few minutes passed in a blur to Dawson. The voices all mixed together. The noises molded. Faces were all just colors except for Joey’s. When the paramedics pulled up, they put an oxygen mask over Joey’s nose and mouth right away. While one of the medics took her vital signs he turned to the nurse and began speaking to her, while Dawson continued to kneel beside Joey. The nurse pointed him out to the medic. He walked over to Dawson and said gently “Are you her boyfriend?”

“What? Oh, uh, yeah. Is she going to be alright?”

He stared at his fallen love.

“Were doing what we can. Is there anything we should know about that could have caused this?” Dawson stared at Joey, who was beginning to open her closed eyes. He felt a huge wave of relief flood over him.

“Son, son..” the medic said.

“What?” Dawson turned toward him, as if noticing him for the first time.

“I said, do you have any idea about what could have caused this?” Without taking a moment to analyze his answer, he replied “She’s pregnant.” The murmering audibly increased among the Capeside high students who had also heard this proclamation.

* * * * *

“..an iron deficiancy. That’s why she fainted. I’m prescribing her supplement and a couple day’s bed rest. After that, we’ll reassess, and talk about whether home school will be necessary...” Bessie and Gail were holding on to every word Doctor Petterson was saying, but Dawson had zoned out after finding out that Joey and the baby were going to be okay.

God, he was so stupid! He couldn’t believe he had announced to half of the student body that he and Joey were going to have a baby. How dumb was he? She was going to kill him. One of the few things Joey would talk about dealing with this baby was how she was going to tell people. She wanted to tell Jen and Jack first, and then once baggy clothes couldn’t conceal the pregnancy anymore, she planned to home school. She knew the entire population of Capeside would know she had carried on the family tradition of getting knocked up, but at least she wouldn’t have to face the pitying faces. Or the gossipy faces. Or the malicious face--a.k.a. Abby Morgan’s.

Dawson slipped away from the still talking Doctor and went in search of Joey. He found her behind a curtain, her eyes closed. Machines beeped around her small body. Her pale face was luminous against her black hair. He started to say something, but then simply walked over and grasped her hand. She opened her eyes. They looked into each others eyes, until he burst out crying and put his head down on her shoulder. She lifted her arm attached to an IV and stroked his thick hair gently. No words were said. No words needed to be said.

Have you ever loved somebody so much
It makes you cry
have you ever needed something so bad
you can’t sleep at night
Have you ever tried to find the words
But they don’t come out right
Have you ever, Have you ever..
