The secret of love
I thought I understood
The way it's supposed to be
I never imagined you could
blow my theory apart
and now you're running away with my heart

I don't wanta think about it
Don't wanta think clear
Don't analyze
What I'm doing here
Wanta be impulsive
Reckless
And lose myself in your kiss Arrows through hearts
Drawn on a misty window
You're taking me home in the rain
My heart is beating
Don't say no
My head keeps saying take it slow don't wanta think about it
Don't wanta think clear
Don't analyze
What I'm doing here
Wanta be impulsive
Reckless
And lose myself in your kiss
You're giving me a feeling
It's a sudden rush
Acting on the moment
Spontaneous
Oh this is not like me
To follow my heart so easily

I'm reckless...impulsive
I never imagined you could blow my theory apart
But now you're running away with my heart
My Heart

-"Impulsive" by Wilson Phillips

"Chris! Get your butt over here!" Abby exclaims, gesturing wildly for Chris Wolfe to come over and sit at her lunch table. She's sitting alone, as usual. Chris eyes her for a moment, then walks over.

"What the heck is the matter with you? You look like you're on drugs."

"Oh, Chris, don't be silly - it's something even better. You're going to go absolutely crazy when you hear what I discovered last night." She smiles wickedly and leans toward him. Chris raises an eyebrow skeptically.

"Will I?"

"You will."

"Would you like to, maybe, tell me what this fabulous thing that you've discovered, or are you just going to keep me in suspense?" He crosses his arms, waiting. Abby leans even closer to him, and points across the cafeteria to where Joey, Dawson, Andie and Pacey are sitting. Andie is talking animatedly to Joey about something, who looks really uncomfortable.

"See Joey and Pacey over there?" Chris nods.

"Yeah, what about them?"

"Well, Pacey and Andie have been attached at the hip for like two months now."

"Everyone knows that, Abby. Is this supposed to be news?" Chris is getting impatient, so Abby decides to cut to the chase.

"Everyone may know that, my dear Christopher, but how many people do you think know that Joey and Pacey are having an illicit affair?"

"What?"

"Yep...Joey and Pacey are sleeping together...and I'm gathering neither Andie, Jack, Jen, or Dawson know...or else the dear little clique over there would be in turmoil - and we wouldn't want that, would we?" Abby grins. Chris looks as if he doesn't believe her.

"And how did you lay hold of such startling information?"

"I saw them, with my own two eyes."

"Excuse me?"

"Well, I was walking down the hall way, minding my own business, when I saw Joey come out of a storage closet. It was the one in the hall, right outside Masterson's room. I put two and two together and realized that she must have been talking to someone - and since she came out alone, that someone was still inside.... So, I'm thinkin' - she and Dawson are probably getting it on, since you know, Joey dumped Jack and all - so I open the door and..." Abby laughs. "And low and behold Pacey Witter is there."

"So, that doesn't mean they're secret lovers, Abby. Really, if you're going to build this up to me as a good piece of gossip, you could at least back it up with something." Abby rolls her eyes, then pats Chris's arm with a condescending smile.

"Little man, hold your horses for a second. This gossip guru hasn't even come near to finishing her tale." Abby pauses momentarily, then continues. "Knowing something was up, I went to talk to Joey at the Ice House...she promptly avoided me, and left work as fast as possible. So naturally, I followed her. Followed her right to Pacey - the two of them headed straight for Joey's house, barely making it in the front door before they started doing it."

"You're not serious!"

"*Completely* serious, Chris, I assure you. They were both half naked before they even opened the door." Abby glances over at Joey and Pacey again, then turns to Chris. "*Now* are you aware of the wonderfulness of this whole situation? I hold the ultimate secret - this could destroy their friendships forever, do you realize this?" Chris stares at Abby, a slow smile creeping over his face.

"And what exactly are you planning to do with this newfound power?" Chris inquires.

"Well...I can't just simply *tell* Andie or Dawson."

"Dawson? You mean, Jack."

"Please, Chris, really. Jack is so out of the picture; of course he'll be pissed when Andie tells him the news, but with Dawson...that's where the real action will be. Dawson and Joey may have broken up - but how do you think he'll feel when he finds out his two best friends have been going at it behind his back? Not very good, I assure you."

"So, if you can't just simply tell them, then what are you going to do? Just wait for them to catch Pacey and Joey in the act?" Chris asks. Abby sits back in her chair.

"That's where you come in."

"That's where *I* come in?" Chris repeats. Abby nods.

"I need an ingenious plan - something thoroughly wicked and awful. A creative and cruel way to drop this bomb on the unsuspecting victims. I've had many ideas, but I just can't seem to get one that really calls out to me, you know?"

"I'm guessing you think I can come up with something?"

"I'm hoping so. I mean, you're the only one in this school who can possibly compare to my level of wickedness...I need a conspiring partner." Abby tells him. Chris runs his hands through his hair and ponders his options.

"What do I get for going in on this with you?"

"Besides the satisfaction of seeing Pacey Witter and Joey Potter's life implode...nothing."

"As great as that offer is, Abby, it's just not tempting enough. I'm just gonna hafta turn it down." He starts to get up, but Abby catches him arm, pulling him back down. She whispers something in his ear and he grins. "You've got a deal."

"That's what I figured," Abby replies, self-assured. Chris gets up and picks up his things, planning to move to the table his friends are sitting at.

"Give me some time - I'll think of something by the end of the day," he informs her. She nods.

"Just make sure it's good or the deal is off."

"Oh, don't worry about that - it'll be good." Chris retorts, and walks away. Abby settles back in her chair and gazes across the cafeteria where Jen is now joining the rest of her friends for lunch. She smirks.

"Oh yeah, this is *definitely* gonna be good."

*******

Joey climbs out of Pacey's bed, wrapping a blanket around herself and surveying his bedroom for her various items of clothing. It was only Wednesday...the third day in a row she had found herself waking in the middle of the night next to Pacey. She glances down at Pacey, who is still laying sound asleep on the left side of the bed, and smiles faintly. It was still dark outside...good thing she had called Bessie and told her she was sleeping over at Dawson's.

"Again?" her sister had exclaimed, but had given in readily. Joey had assured her she was staying in the guest room, and Bessie trusted that Mr. and Mrs. Leery would keep it that way; after all, if Joey and Dawson had made up, they probably wanted to make up for lost time. Bessie's will power to discipline Joey always disappeared when it came to Dawson Leery; he was practically a member of the family at one time. She missed him too.

Of course, Bessie had absolutely no idea that her little sister was really sharing Pacey Witter's bed, and Joey intended to keep it that way. She gathers her clothes and straightens them out, folding them neatly and setting them on Pacey's dresser. In the morning she'd have to escape early and go home to change before school.

Pacey hears Joey moving around and slowly wakes up with a small smile.

"Jo, worry about that in the morning..." he rubs the empty space next to him on the bed. "Come back here." Joey grins. She'd learned to block out her feelings of guilt while she was with Pacey, and she knew he had learned to also. Every other hour of the day, she was riddled with guilt over their secret rendezvous - she couldn't even look at Andie without wanting to shoot herself - but as soon as they stepped into Pacey's bedroom, it was like they were in stepping into their own little world. A world where no one else could touch them, where Andie McPhee didn't exist. But now, Joey found her mind wandering toward thoughts of their eventual discovery. Joey climbs back into bed next to Pacey and snuggles in next to him, feeling the warmth of his body against hers. It was only a matter of time before it all had to end.

"Pacey?" Joey murmurs, kissing his shoulder lightly.

"Yeah?" he replies, turning his head slightly to glance at her. She looked so innocent, staring up at him, the dim light coming in through the window casting soft shadows on her beautiful face. Joey rests her head against Pacey's chest, letting out a deep sigh.

"How long do you think we'll be able to keep this up?" Pacey is silent. "We can't keep doing this. We are going to get caught some time, or have to end it before that, you know."

"I know," he sighs, and sits up, startling Joey from her comfortable position. "I know that this can't keep going on, Joey...I wish it could - god if you only knew how much I wish it could - " Pacey reaches out and strokes Joey's hair, closing his eyes for a moment. "But you know how it is with Andie..." Joey gently places her hand over his, gazing at him lovingly.

"I know..." she whispers.

"I just...I don't think she suspects anything yet, Joey...and I don't want this to end before it has to..." He leans against the headboard, rubbing his forehead. "And now she has that stupid job at Screenplay Video, and it's driving me crazy. Sometimes I just think...that I should come right out and tell her that I don't want to go out with her anymore...but then I think about what that would do to her and I can't go through with it." He puts his hands on Joey's bare arms, staring deep into her eyes. "But then I realize that in order to have a relationship with Andie, an honest, working one...you and I would have to..."

"What you want, you can't have because of what you already *do* have..." Joey mumbles, giving Pacey a half-smile. They both are quiet for a few minutes, just sitting there in bed, both wondering how their lives have gotten so confusing. Joey shifts toward him again. "But we're here now, Pacey...so let's just forget I even brought this up and..." Joey trails her hand down his chest, biting her lip. Pacey looks at her, smiling lightly.

"And...what?" Joey slips her hand underneath the blankets slowly and Pacey gets the answer he was waiting for. Without another word she rolls on top of him and lays her lips on his, kissing him passionately but sweetly. Pacey pulls her as close to him as possible. "I wish we could stay together forever, Joey..." he whispers huskily in her ear, thoroughly wishing it with every inch of his being.

"So do I, Pace..." she kisses his neck. "But let's just content ourselves with this moment for right now..." Pacey smiles and draws her lips back up to his.

"I can handle that."

*******

"Dawson? Dawson, honey - this came in the mail for you today." Dawson looks at his mother as he comes down the stairs, who is holding out a white envelope to him. He looks at her quizzically, and then takes it from her.

"What is it?"

"Open it up," Gale tells him, smiling knowingly. Dawson looks at the return address, and immediately tears the envelope open. He reads it, enraptured. Gale watches him intently, breathless in anticipation. "So?"

"I won!" Dawson exclaims, almost jumping up and down in joy. "I actually, truly, won! My monster movie won!" He hands his mother the letter, and she reads it quickly. Then she throws her arms around her son, proud.

"Dawson, this is fabulous! I knew you could do it! I'll call your father. Or do you want to tell him in person?" Gale asks, smiling widely.

"I'll stop by before work today and tell him. Wow..." He looks at the letter as his mother hands it back to him, and he just starts grinning giddily. "This is just so amazing. It's been so long that I was beginning to think that I had definitely lost. I can't believe this."

"I can - you're a supremely talented young man, Dawson," she states, kissing him on the forehead. Then she turns him toward the door. "Now go to school and brag about it to everyone, all right?" she laughs lightly. Dawson kisses her on the cheek and then heads for the door.

"I can't wait to tell Joey and Jen!" he says as he leaves. "They are going to be so surprised!" Dawson races off toward school, but halfway down the front steps her stops and turns back. Gale holds out his backpack to him. "Thanks." He takes his bag and runs off toward Capeside High.

*******

Dawson walks into school, feeling as if he's walking on air. His troubles with Jen and Andie seemed far away, so distant, now that this wonderful thing had happened to him. He didn't have time to worry about his stolen kisses with Andie when he held a letter of congratulations from the Boston Film Festival. Jen is at her locker, looking like she's having trouble waking up. Dawson races up to her and gives her a kiss, taking her by surprise. She looks at him, wondering why he's grinning so wildly.

"Dawson! Hey! What are you so happy about?"

"Can't a guy just be happy to see his girlfriend?" Dawson laughs.

"Well, I'm definitely glad that you're happy to see me, Dawson...now what's this?" She takes the letter he's holding out to her, puzzled.

"I won, Jen. Our film. It actually won." Jen's eyes widen in shock, and she looks up at her boyfriend, making sure he's not lying.

"The creature movie? The one that..."

"Yes, the one that *you* starred in! Jen, do you know how cool this is?" he exclaims, and picks her up in his arms, whirling her around. Jen giggles as he sets her back down and gives her a kiss. When they break away from one another, Jen continues reading the letter.

"Wow, Dawson...this is amazing...Best in the Junior Filmmaker Division....I am *so* proud of you!" she kisses him again.

"Proud of you for what?" Joey asks, stopping by the enthusiastic pair. Jen hands the letter to Joey excitedly, telling her what's in it before she even gets the chance to look at it.

"Dawson won the Boston Film Festival!" Jen tells her, happily.

"Not the....not the *whole* festival, just my division," Dawson corrects her, not wanting to brag about something he didn't do. Joey looks at her best friend, amazed.

"Dawson...that is just..." she can't find the words to tell him how she feels, and Dawson takes it as a sign she's not happy for him. He looks a little hurt.

"What...what's the matter?" Dawson asks, as Joey continues to stammer. Giving up on words, Joey stops and throws her arms around him.

"Congratulations," Joey says as she pulls away from him, smiling, with tears welling up in her eyes. "You really did it." She wipes her face and re-reads the letter again. Then she looks up at Dawson, smiling wickedly. "Wait until Mr. Gold hears about this, he's gonna kick himself for making you wait so long to get into his film class."

"And kick himself even harder for making you waste your time on Cliff's Helmets of Glory," Jen adds, and they all laugh. Down the hall, Pacey and Andie walk into school, and are both a bit surprised to see Joey, Jen, and Dawson smiling, laughing, and talking together. They all looked thrilled over something. Andie almost stops in her tracks as Dawson kisses Jen. Pacey glances at his girlfriend, unaware of the reason she had hesitated in walking toward their friends.

"What, McPhee, having trouble walking today? See, you put one foot in front of the other...just like this..." he points down to his own feet. Andie smirks.

"Very funny, Pacey. Tell Dawson and them I said hi, okay? I have to go take care of something in the library before homeroom," Andie lies, not wanting to have to stand there and make nice while Dawson fawned over Jen. Well, what else could she expect him to do? They *are* going out. Jen is Dawson's girlfriend, not her...despite the passionate kisses that had taken place last week in the back of the video store. She says good-bye to Pacey and walks toward the stairs, and Pacey heads over to his friends.

Jen sees Pacey coming, and glances at Joey, wanting to see her reaction.

"Hey you guys...why all the happy buzz coming off you three?" Pacey inquires, trying hard not to look at Joey. Joey looks at him, though, suddenly falling quiet. Her face collapses for a millisecond, but quickly a fake, tight, smile replaces it. Jen turns to look at Pacey, who is noticeably trying to avert his eyes from Joey. Dawson hands his friend the letter and waits for him to read it.

"Well, congrats, Dawson!" Pacey says, patting Dawson on the back. "That is just super cool."

"I know, I can barely believe that my film won anything."

"I'm sure if you had left Joey as the leading lady, there would've been problems, but since you killed her off so early the judges probably gave you more bonus points," Pacey jokes, finally looking at Joey. She tries not to look stung.

"Oh, Pacey, don't be silly. It was Dawson's *great* casting that probably set him apart from the other films. I mean, who would've made a better horrifying monster from the deep than you?" Joey bites back, hoping that her insult stings him, just like his insult had hurt her. They had agreed to keep their normal banter routines up as a front, but everyday it was getting harder to swap insults and even harder not to be hurt by the words. She knew he didn't mean them, but they still hurt nonetheless. Trying to save face, she turns to Dawson. "I've got to go. Bye, Jen, Dawson...Jail Bait." She saunters off, and Pacey's gaze lingers on her as she disappears down the hallway. Dawson slaps Pacey's shoulder.

"I thought you and Joey were trying to cut back on the sarcastic wit, buddy. Try to be real friends."

"We are being real friends. This is us, being real friends," Pacey states, shrugging. "At least that's how we were as friends before we starting sleeping together," Pacey thinks to himself, wondering how in hell he'd be able to keep this act up. "So, Mr. Film Festival...how do you plan on celebrating your big win?" Dawson, Jen, and Pacey start walking down the hall together, heading for Dawson and Jen's homeroom. Dawson shrugs.

"I don't know...I suppose throwing myself a party would be a little egotistical," he laughs. "I think I'm just going to be happy about it, take Jen here out to dinner...that will be my celebration."

"Take me out to dinner? Oh, Mr. Leery, aren't you the suave one," Jen replies, slipping her hand into his.

"I try," he says. Chris Wolfe watches as Dawson and Jen disappear into their homeroom and Pacey continues down the hallway. An idea was brewing in his mind, and if all worked out well...Abby Morgan would definitely get one hell of a bomb to drop.

*******

"Dawson, I think this is just so cool," Andie says, handing Dawson back his letter. Dawson smiles a bit awkwardly at her.

"Thanks," he replies, and turns back to the rest of the lunch table, back to Jen. Dawson had been avoiding her all day long, clinging to Jen as if she provided him with the breath of life. She didn't know if this was his not-so-subtle way of telling her the other day was a mistake, or if he was acting overly-nice toward Jen out of guilt...either way, she was still confused over where she stood with him. She forces a smile at Pacey, who in turn forces one right back.

"What are you going to do with the money they granted you for your next movie?" Joey asks Dawson. He shrugs.

"I don't know...I have to think of a good plot to start with. No more monster movies, though, I know that much at least." Everyone laughs. "I'll have to think of something, though."

"What did Mr. Gold say about your win? I bet he felt sheepish," Jen remarks.

"Come on...Mr. Gold wasn't that bad to me at the beginning of the year. It's not like he didn't let me in the class because he thought I was a loser...he didn't let me in because I was a sophomore. It wasn't like a personal insult or anything."

"Still..." Joey starts, but drops it. "What did he say about the film anyway?"

"Well, he hasn't exactly seen it or anything, but he wants to show it in class."

"Really?" Pacey asks, taking the opportunity to say something and get involved in the conversation without really having to think of anything to say.

"Yeah. I'm not sure I want them to see it, though. It'll be kind of embarrassing."

"Embarrassing?" Joey exclaims. "I'm the one running around in a skimpy bikini top."

"And I'm the one dressed up in a monster suit," Pacey points out.

"And I'm the one who has to scream like a girlie girl and fall in love with the monster..." Jen adds. Dawson throws up his hands in defeat.

"Point taken...if you guys don't mind me showing it to the film class, I'll do it." He looks at the three of them, and they all nod.

"Go ahead," Pacey says. "It's not like being seen in a slimy monster costume will harm my reputation...I think it's already as bad as a reputation can get anyway." Dawson smiles.

"Cool. I'll let you know when Mr. Gold is showing it and maybe he can get you out of class to come watch it with us."

"Well, I'm always up for getting out of class!" Pacey grins. Andie sighs a little, feeling left out. The whole monster movie thing was a product of times before she had moved to Capeside, and watching them talk about it left her feeling singled out and alone. Jen notices, and turns to her.

"So, Andie...um, how is Jack doing? I mean...he's stopped sitting with us now and I haven't seen him in awhile," Jen says. Andie gestures across the cafeteria to where Jack is sitting with a bunch of the artsy students...most of them are dressed all in black, and Jack looks slightly odd in his Abercrombie & Fitch clothing.

"He's been hanging with some of his art club friends lately. I think he feels a little odd, since..." she glances at Joey. Joey sighs.

"God, now I feel like I horrible wench," Joey complains. "I didn't mean that he had to go and make all new friends just because we broke up. I didn't mean for it to be like-" Andie realizes that she's struck the wrong chord and tries to soothe Joey.

"It's okay, Joey...sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up," Andie tells her. "Jack is just a little hurt and upset right now...but I know that he'll get over it. You just have to give him some time." Joey looks at Andie, finding it hard to sit there across from the friend she is betraying.

"I'll try to talk to him later," Joey mumbles. "He's been avoiding me ever since we broke up and we still have some things to resolve, I guess." She shrugs, and then paints a bright smile on her face. "But let's not dwell on that, shall we? New topic. Anyone."

"Anyone finish that lab that's due tomorrow?" Dawson asks. They all look at him.

"Anyone have an *interesting* new topic?" Joey jokes. Dawson pokes her in the ribs, pretending that he's hurt by that. "Hey!" she shoos his hands away.

"Andie, are we still on to finish that lab today after school?" Pacey asks her, remembering that they had plans to go over it together. Or rather, for Andie to explain to him what he did wrong and show him the right way to do it. He's surprised by the look on Andie's face. She smacks her forehead.

"Oh my god, Pacey, I completely forgot!"

"You...forgot?"

"I'm sorry...I meant to tell you...I'm scheduled to work today."

"You are?" comes Dawson's reply as he looks up, alarmed. Joey gives him a weird look.

"I am..." Andie sighs.

"But...I was counting on your help, Andie. I only have about half of it done!" Pacey is clearly a bit miffed by Andie's actions, not looking forward to getting another zero averaged into his science grade.

"You know that I would help you if I could, Pacey, I-"

"Why doesn't Joey help him?" Jen suggests. Joey tries to supress a gasp and looks at Jen, wanting to kill her for suggesting such a thing.

"Oh, yes!" Andie exclaims, happy that a solution has been found. "Joey, will you do it?" Joey looks as if she's going to puke. Pacey looks equally dismayed. He shakes his head no at Joey, trying to signal her to turn Andie down.

"I don't know...I..."

"Oh come on, Joey..." Jen says, urging Joey on. Joey glares at her, not quite sure what her friend is doing. "You don't have to work today, right? It'll only be for like half an hour after school." The bell rings, signaling lunch is over. Everyone at the table waits for Joey's answer before getting up.

"Pacey, it's okay if Joey helps you, right?" Andie turns to him as they all stand up. Pacey stumbles for a suitable answer, and can't come up with a reason that Joey shouldn't help him. He needed to get the lab done and Joey was his only option.

"Uh...yeah, I guess so..." Pacey stammers.

"What do you say, Jo?" Jen asks, smiling wickedly at Joey. "Help Pacey with the homework?"

"Um...sure. Fine. Whatever."

"Great!" Andie says, giving Joey a quick hug. "Thanks a bundle. See you all later! See you at work, Dawson." Andie leaves the cafeteria. Dawson kisses Jen and says good-bye to Pacey and Joey.

"Bye, guys," Dawson leaves. Pacey looks at Jen and Joey, still trying to absorb what had just happened. His own girlfriend had just forced him to have meet his secret lover after school...Pacey shakes his head, as if trying to put himself back into reality.

"See you after school, Joey," Pacey mumbles and practically races from the cafeteria. Joey doesn't even answer. She turns to Jen as they walk out of the lunch room.

"Are you nuts?" Joey shrieks as they get into the hallway. Jen plays innocent.

"What do you mean?"

"You're nuts! You're insane! How could you do that to me?"

"What did I do?"

"Suggesting that I help Pacey? Could you have put me in a more awkward position, Jen?"

"Awkward? I don't see it as awkward. I thought you'd be glad."

"Glad? Why would I be glad?"

"Because this is the perfect opportunity to end things with Pacey. In school...a public place where you can't even think about doing anything other than talking," Jen says to her, whispering harshly. "And you have to end things, Joey...you and I both know that what you're doing is wrong. You can't hide your affair forever, Joey, and if Pacey can't leave Andie, then you've got to leave him."

"Jen..."

"No, Joey...I know that you and Pacey are trying to act like everything is normal between you, I've seen you banter back and forth in the halls when everyone else is around, as if nothing has changed in your relationship...and it's inevitable that someone else is going to see the truth besides me. Inevitable, Joey."

"It's not-"

"Jo. End it. After school today in the lab. Tell him it's over." Jen squeezes Joey's hand and then walks away. Joey turns to go to her next class and crashes right into Abby.

"Oh, sorry..." Joey mutters, not even bothering to look and see who she walked into. Abby continues on her way, smirking to herself. She'd heard everything. Joey Potter and Pacey Witter were going down.

*******

"Chris! Chris! You will be so thrilled when you hear the latest development in this little Joey/Pacey scandal!" Abby exclaims, excited. Chris looks up at her, leaning back in his seat and acting uninterested. Study hall was usually his time set aside to sleep, not to gossip with Abby Morgan.

"And what development is this?" He asks, examining his blue shirt for lint.

"Joey and Pacey are meeting in the lab today after school and Joey's going to end it, supposedly."

"Oh, really."

"Yes, really. I just need to find a way to make it so Andie can somehow-" Chris takes something out of his backpack and hands it to Abby. She looks at it, a sly, wicked smile growing across her face. She raises an eyebrow. "Why, Mr. Wolfe, I'd have to say I like this idea," she says as she takes the small hand-held camera out of his outstretched hands. "I like the way you think."

"I knew you would." Chris winks at her. "Do what you must, Miss Morgan. There is a 6 hour tape in there."

"So...do you think Pacey and Joey are ready to be on candid camera?" Abby asks, laughing. She looks the camera over, mentally trying to picture a good place to hide it in the lab room.

"Well, let's just hope that the two of them won't be able to keep their hands off each other. They so much as kiss and we've got a great beginning for our very own home movie."

"Chris, what *exactly* do you have in mind?" Abby inquires, taking off her backpack and stashing the camera inside.

"I want to keep it a surprise."

"Hey, buddy, I asked *you* to help *me*...I should know what you're planning."

"I work in secret, Abby...no man nor woman shalt knoweth the secrets in mine heart," Chris replies, smiling teasingly. Abby glares at him. He just pats her on the shoulder. "Abby, just trust me. Use that camera to find out what goes on in the lab today, and if it turns out well...well then I just might tell you what I'm going to do with it." Abby rolls her eyes.

"I should've just stayed a lone force of evil in this school...you're trying to take over my position. It's like I've created a monster."

"Abby, believe me...I have no desire to do things like this all the time. I much more enjoy watching you do it and then merely sitting back and watching the effects. But this is one job that is just too good to pass up." He smirks. "Besides...I haven't gotten all the details worked out quite yet. You just follow Pacey and Joey around with that camera and start planning how to say thank you when I make complete fools of Pacey and Joey, and maybe even Dawson, in the process."

"Dawson too?" Abby smiles.

"Oh yes...Dawson too. Just wait and see."

Joey walks into the darkened lab room and turns on the light. It's raining hard outside, the sky almost as dark as if it were night. She lets out a huge sigh and plops her book bag down on one of the large lab tables, trying to think of a way to just get Pacey's lab done without doing anything else.

"Hey, Joey." Joey whirls around, a bit startled. Pacey is standing in the doorway, looking more handsome than ever. Her heart skips a beat.

"Uh...hi." Joey replies, almost breathless as he walks over toward her. "So....ready to start that lab up?"

"Yeah..." Pacey says, watching as she nervously stands up and gestures toward the black topped lab station in the front of the room.

"I suppose we might as well use the teacher's station..." Joey suggests. The tension in the air is palpable, and as Joey circles the lab table, Pacey has to fight down the urge to grab her and kiss her. She digs through her bag and tries to find her own lab. "Okay...you need to get out a Bunsen burner, and-"

"Okay, stop a second." Pacey interrupts, his gaze fixated on her. "Can we just...just talk for a second? I can't work like this." Joey tries to pretend she doesn't know what he's talking about.

"Like what?" She looks at her hands. "I'm just helping you out, like Jen suggested."

"Yeah, I know that's what you're doing. That doesn't mean that we have to ignore the simple and obvious truth that this is an awkward situation, especially since my own girlfriend practically insisted that we do this." Joey closes her eyes and rubs her forehead, turning and leaning against the table so she's not facing Pacey any longer.

"I know, I know..." she lets out a long, deep breath. "I just...I can't take this, Pacey. It wouldn't be so bad if Andie and I weren't friends...but god! We eat lunch together every day...her brother is my ex-boyfriend...this could not be a worse situation." Pacey walks to the door of the classroom and shuts it and pulls down the blinds over the door window. If anyone heard what he and Joey were discussing, they'd be caught for sure. He walks back over to her and takes her hand gently.

"Joey...I understand that...I understand that this is hard...I mean, I just look at you in class and suddenly I can't think straight. I can't ignore these feelings I have for you, but I don't want to put you through hell just because I can't leave Andie."

"What are you saying?" Joey asks, opening her eyes and looking up at him.

"I'm saying...if you don't want to do this anymore...the sneaking around...I understand." Pacey tells her, his voice cracking and choking in his throat. He hadn't wanted to say it, but he knew that what he and Joey had couldn't continue to go on. It was unfair to her, and he loved her too much to have to treat her second rate like this. Joey stares into his eyes, her words hesitating.

"I...I think you're right, Pacey. We should end this." Joey then looks away once more, not wanting him to see her eyes well up with tears as she spoke. Pacey is silent for a moment his heart crumbling even though he knows that she is right in her answer. Her squeezes her hand gently and takes a step away.

"Okay," he says softly. Quietly, he starts getting out the materials needed for the lab. He didn't know what else to do. Joey stands there silently, watching him as he completes the set-up and then looks at her expectantly. "So what do we do now?" His question carries a double meaning. Joey picks up her lab, deciding to focus on the work at hand.

"Well, the whole lab is about observing chemical reactions. What reacts, what doesn't, and why. You have the NaOH out?" she scans the table, looking for the small bottle. It's not there, so she goes to the cupboard and takes it out. Pacey's eyes follow her every movement; he wants her terribly yet he knows that he can't have her. He tries to busy his mind with thoughts of chemistry, but nothing works.

"Andie, think of Andie," Pacey repeats over and over to himself, but every time he imagines his short, blonde girlfriend, his thoughts immediately go back to his tall brunette friend who had recently become the woman of his dreams. Joey returns and hands him the plastic container, unaware of Pacey's longing thoughts but feeling the effects of her own. She takes him through the various steps of the experiment, occasionally stuttering and stammering whenever their eyes would meet .

Just looking at him, Joey was overcome with an urge to kiss him. Every time she brushed against him or came near to him, her body became aroused...all she wanted to do was finish the lab so she could escape. It was torture. It made her think of one time as a child when her mother had baked a pan of brownies for Bessie to take to school for her birthday. She wanted them so horribly but she was forbidden to touch them. "Off limits," her mother had warned. She had climbed up on a chair when her mother left the room and basically started grabbing handfuls of the delicious chocolate - and had promptly been yelled at and sent to her room for the rest of the night. Sitting across from Pacey, she feels just like that bad little girl all over again. Pacey's definitely off limits, yet she's never yearned for someone so much ever before in her life...and she doubted she'd be able to resist much longer.

When they reached the last question, she thought she was home free. She had actually made it through the entire experiment and nothing had happened between her and Pacey.

"So...when you add these two chemicals together...just because of the way they are made - their different components or whatever, they naturally react to one another?" Pacey asks, trying to make sure he has it straight before he writes it down. Joey smiles and nods.

"Yep, that's right." Pacey finishes his sentence with a proud flourish and holds up his paper.

"Done! Thank god. Tell me again why it's important to know this stuff?"

"It isn't," Joey laughs, and gathers up some of the various containers they had gotten out and starts putting them away. Pacey takes the rest and follows her to the cupboard. "So I guess we're all finished." Joey sighs, standing next to him as he sets the bottles back on the shelf. He looks at her and simply nods, very aware of the close proximity of their bodies. Joey is too, and takes a tiny step backward.

"Yeah, I guess we are." They stare at one another for a moment, and then Joey goes to pick up her back pack.

"I should probably go."

"Okay," Pacey replies. Joey puts her bag over her shoulders but makes no move for the door, enraptured by the feeling of his deep green eyes staring deeply at her.

"Yeah...I'm going..." Joey mumbles, and takes a step toward the door, setting her hand on the knob. Last minute, she gives into her emotions and locks the door instead of opening it. "Oh, screw it." Tossing her backpack to the ground she quickly finds herself in Pacey's arms, his lips pressed eagerly to hers and his hands all over her body. In a mere instant all her resolve to take Jen's advice and end the affair was completely forgotten. "God, Pacey, " she whispers as her fingers tear at his belt buckle. "This can't end. I need you."

"I need you too, Jo. More than anything..." he breathes back, his mind whirling insanely. Barely seeing straight, he picks Joey up and sets her on the lab table and pulls her shirt over her head, accidentally knocking some stacks of papers onto the floor that the teacher had set there neatly. Neither of them notice, completely lost in one another as if they were captives in the frenzied world of ecstasy and desire.

*******

"So, Andie. What's up?"

"Nothing. You?" Andie replies shortly and awkwardly, immediately taking a stack of videos from the return bin and going to the computer to enter that they had been returned on time. Dawson shoves his hands in his pockets, not having the faintest idea of what to say to Andie. It was incredibly strange, especially since a mere few days earlier he felt like he could tell her anything.

"Nothing new here. Just brainstorming ideas for my new movie. Do you have any?"

"Any what?" Andie asks, her fingers moving rapidly on the keyboard.

"Any ideas." Andie hits a button and then picks all the videos up.

"Here's an idea. Video store employee named Dawson goes and puts these videos back on the shelves and then goes to sweep the sidewalk out front. It's not action-packed or romantic, but at least it would be reality-based," Andie hands him the stack and turns away.

"Andie, why are you mad at me?" Dawson asks, gently. "I know that what happened last time we worked together wasn't something that should've happened, but it wasn't just my fault, if I remember."

"Yes, Dawson, I know it was my fault too. It was a mistake. So go make out with Jen or whatever it is you do with her and we'll just pretend it never happened, kay? Kay." She turns away from him and immediately starts busying herself unwrapping a roll of quarters and re-filling the change tray of the register.

"Please, Andie, you can not act like this."

"Like what?"

"You have a boyfriend too, you know. His name is Pacey? Remember him?" Dawson says, vaguely annoyed that Andie is pissed at him for hanging with Jen. What right did she have to be mad when she was doing the exact same thing?

"*Yes*, I remember who Pacey is. And frankly when it comes to Pacey I'm feeling pretty terrible because I just kissed his best friend. It's not going to go over well when I tell him that I kissed you," Andie crosses her arms and glares at Dawson.

"You're going to tell Pacey?"

"I don't have a choice. I can't live with this guilt. It's wrong."

"But you can't just tell him, Andie! It's going to tear him apart!" Dawson exclaims. He sets the videos down on the counter. "I realize that there are serious consequences to our actions, Andie. Kissing each other has huge repercussions and they are not repercussions that I am fully ready to deal with. Our attraction to one another came as a complete shock to me and you can't pretend that you weren't surprised either." He stops for a second, taking a breath. "That kiss, er...kisses...it was impulsive, unexpected...I'm not used to doing things like that. You and I are both intelligent, thoughtful, analytical..."

"Neurotic?" Andie supplies, half-smiling.

"Yes, neurotic, even," Dawson agrees. "We rushed into things, for once not thinking of all possible outcomes beforehand. And we can't repeat that mistake with Pacey. We have to think things through, figure out what to do. Do you want to break up with Pacey? Honestly?"

"Honestly...part of me likes you and part of me wants to stay with Pacey. Pacey...he's always been there for me when I needed him. He understands how hard my life is. And just as I depend on him, he depends on me. He already has such a low attitude about himself that...I think that if I...the only person who has ever believed in him..."

"I get it..." Dawson nods. "Jen and I, I mean, we just got our relationship started again. And it's not like I don't like Jen. She's great."

"Exactly! I mean, we both have these really great people to date and here we are kissing each other even though we know that starting a relationship with one another would kill every friendship we have. How dumb are we?"

"So maybe you were right the first time. Forget it ever happened? Sure, we may be attracted to one another, but we both know that a relationship between us would never work out."

"Yes, forget it. Erase it from our memories. I won't tell Pacey, you won't tell Jen...and we'll both live happily ever after. You with Jen, me with Pacey." Andie nods determinedly as she speaks, making her decision definite.

"Sounds like a good plan to me." Dawson picks the videos back up and walks out from behind the counter as Andie heads for the back room. "But, Andie?" Andie stops and turns around, expectant.

"Yes?"

"Just because we can't pursue a relationship, don't think that kiss didn't mean anything to me, okay? I promise that part of me is always going to be jealous that you're with Pacey."

"The kiss meant something to me too, Dawson," Andie smiles lightly. "And the same goes for you and Jen. But don't worry, I don't plan on getting into a cat fight or anything." She laughs. Dawson grins and shakes his head.

"Pacey is a lucky guy," Dawson remarks.

"Well, Jen's a lucky girl." They smile at one another for a minute, and then Andie turns and disappears into the storage room.

"Okay, starting now we officially forget that kiss ever took place," Dawson calls to her. Andie sticks her head back into the main room with a silly grin.

"What kiss?" she asks, acting wide-eyed and innocent.

*******

"Hey there, you," Jen sits down next to Jack McPhee on the dock with a friendly smile. The sky was still dark, the last few drops of rain pattering onto the calm water. Jack looked as gloomy as the weather. She felt sorry for Jack - she knew how much he really liked Joey and how fast she had dropped him. But hopefully now that Joey was going to end things with Pacey (which she was pretty sure was going to happen) maybe Jo would realize the error of her ways and ask Jack to forgive her. "How are you doing?"

"As good as can be expected, I think," Jack says, his voice full of sadness. "Everything's been a little weird since..."

"Yeah, I know...We all miss you, you know. Joey never meant to push you out of the group when she...well, when she..."

"When she dumped me, Jen. You can say it, it's not going to sound callous," Jack looks at her. "I know she never meant to tell me I couldn't hang with you guys anymore, but it's just too weird. When all my friends are my ex-girlfriend's friends..." Jack shrugs. "Besides, it's not like Mike and them are that bad to hang around with."

"Yeah, except they all wear black, dye their hair strange colors and smoke pot while you are the epitome of Mr. Nice Guy Gap Ad." Jack laughs.

"True, I do tend to stand out a little...but they're nice. They don't want me to be like them. People who tend to be judged just because they're different tend to be less likely to judge others. Don't want to put someone through what they go through, I guess," Jack smiles, and Jen smiles back. "This one girl, Lydia, is a really great artist...you should see some of her stuff sometime." Jen nods.

"I'd like to. If you're not comfortable hanging with us because Joey's around, then I'll come to you to hang, how's that sound?" Jen offers.

"That would be nice," Jack says. "How are things going with Dawson?"

"Good, actually. Smooth sailing. We're going out tonight to celebrate his movie winning that award."

"Oh, his movie won? Tell him congratulations. I remember Joey talking about that. Boston Film Festival, right?" Jen nods. " Cool...so, where are you going?"

"Where else?" Jen laughs. "We're going to the Rialto to see a movie and then going to get some late dinner. How about you, what are you up to?"

"Oh...I think I'm going to sit at home, have a pity party," Jack says. Jen puts her hand on his shoulder comfortingly.

"Don't do that, Jack. Go out and have fun."

"I just wish..."

"Wish what?"

"I wish that I knew why Joey did it. I mean, she'd been acting a little distant for a few days before it, but I figured she was just going through one of her things, you know? She's moody. And then *bam*...she's telling me she doesn't want to go out anymore. It was a total slap in the face." Jack sighs, looking down at the serene water below him for a moment before kicking it with his bare foot.

"Joey...she's a complicated person, Jack. I don't even understand her. I mean, she hated me when I first got here and now she's one of my best friends."

"Did she ever say anything to you about why she dumped me?" Jack asks, looking at Jen hopefully. "I know I'm a klutz and that I'm awkward and that I'm not particularly great-looking, but Joey knew all that before we started going out...and I can't think of anything I could've done to make her mad..."

"Joey never really explained any reasons why to me, Jack, I'm sorry," Jen lies, knowing if she came out and told him the truth that it would lead to a fate worse than death for her. She couldn't even begin to imagine what Joey would do if she blabbed her secret, to Jack of all people. "And you're a great-looking guy, Jack, don't be silly," Jen adds as an afterthought. Jack blushes a little. "I know how you felt about Joey, but don't let this hold you down for too long, okay? You shouldn't sit around and mope when there are tons of other girls out there who are just waiting for you to come along."

"Yeah right," Jack mutters. Jen stands up and offers him her hand.

"You should come out tonight, with me and Dawson."

"You can't be serious."

"I'm perfectly serious."

"No way! I am not going to go out with you guys tonight! Not only would being around Dawson make me feel utterly strange, but being the third wheel has no appeal for me." Jen grabs his hand and tugs on his arm until Jack reluctantly stands up.

"Come on, it'll be fun." Jack shakes his head no. "I'm going to keep begging you until you come with us, Jack McPhee, so you might as well give in now."

"I am strong, I will persevere...Andie is a champion nagger and I have had lots of experience fending her off."

"Jack..."

"No."

"You and Dawson can trade Joey war stories. Vent about how she dumps perfectly good guys for stupid reasons," Jen smiles wickedly.

"I'm sure you'd really appreciate Dawson complaining about Joey," Jack rolls his eyes.

"If it helps you, I'll have him bring out every Joey complaint he's ever had in his entire life. Now are you coming or not?" Jen asks, putting her hands on her hips. Seeing Jen simply won't take no for an answer, Jack gives in.

"Okay...fine. But if you think that this is going to magically make me get over Joey, you're insane." Jen just takes his hand and leads him down the dock.

"Come on, Moping McPhee, we have to go meet Dawson."

*******

Joey stands by the windowsill, pants slightly as she fixes the collar of her shirt. Pacey, who is standing a few feet away, looks around the room as if searching for something. His bare chest heaves as he tries to catch his breath. Joey spots what he is looking for and goes over behind another table and picks his shirt up off the ground. She hands it to him, laughing lightly.

"Did we really just do that?" Joey asks, not believing what had just happened.

"Not only did we do that, we did that twice," Pacey replies, pulling his dark green polo over his head. Joey glances at the clock, shaking her head in disbelief.

"It's seven o'clock, Pacey..." She picks her back pack up from the floor and searches through it for her brush. She runs it through her messy hair quickly. "Bessie's going to have my ass. Dinner was at six." Pacey laughs lightly.

"Can't you just tell her that you were...busy?" Joey doesn't reply; instead she stands there, looking around the classroom as if something mystical and shocking had happened before her very eyes.

"I just can't believe we did this, Pacey. What if someone had caught us?" She looks down at the floor and realizes that amidst their flurry of passion they had sent last week's labs flying all over the floor. "Oh god..." she groans. Pacey follows her gaze.

"Yeah...uh, sorry about that one," Pacey grins a little and bends down to start picking them up. "You don't think he had these in any kind of order, do you?" Joey looks from the papers to the desk to Pacey and then back to the papers.

"Uh...let's just stack them back up. I doubt he'll remember if he had them in order anyway."

"Good point." They hastily begin re-organizing the labs until Pacey stops and holds one up with a wicked smile. "Well, would you look at this. Joey Potter got an 9 out of 10 on last week's lab...tsk tsk tsk, Josephine, what are we going to do with you?" Joey laughs and tries to grab her paper from him.

"Very funny, Pace. I'd be laughing really hard, truly, if my side wasn't bruised so badly."

"Come on, Joey, it can't hurt that bad," Pacey says. Joey lifts up the side of her shirt and pulls down her shorts a little to show Pacey the bruise that was forming from her hip up to her stomach on the side of her body. Pacey winces. "Ouch, okay, I'd just like to say...*really* sorry." He touches the bruise gently, shaking his head sadly. "Who would've thought a fall from the table to the floor could be so cruel?" They look at one another and burst out into hysterics, remembering how wildly they were going at it on the top of the lab station until they accidentally went crashing to the floor. Joey was surprised she hadn't broken something.

Pacey picks up the rest of the scattered papers and sets them back on the desk, trying to make them look like they had before. He slaps the desktop.

"Man, I'm never going to look at this room the same way again."

"I know...I don't think I'll be able to get through lab tomorrow without laughing," Joey replies. Pacey moves closer to her.

"You know, Joey...it seems that whenever we tell each other that this is over, we wind up having sex," he raises and eyebrow at her slyly. Joey leans over and kisses him lightly on the lips.

"This could get to be a problem," she states. She goes to pull away but Pacey brings her back to him again for a longer, deeper kiss.

"I've had worse problems, believe me," Pacey murmurs to her as they finally break away from one another. Joey smirks lightly and goes to the door and unlocks it.

"Pacey, I'm sure you have *all kinds* of problems." Pacey rolls his eyes at her with fake annoyance. Picking up her back pack for her, he opens the door.

"Lead the way, Ice Queen." Joey enters the hall, laughing. As Pacey closes the door behind them, she leans in and whispers something in his ear.

"Pacey...I think you might have to drop the Ice Queen insult from your array. Any girl who does it in a high school laboratory can hardly be called an Ice Queen." Joey taps his chest lightly and then they walk toward the school doors. Down the hallway, Abby sticks her head out from around a corner with a smile, and dashes into the laboratory to collect the video camera.

"You may have a point there," Pacey admits, chuckling. "So what would you rather I use? Jail bait? Uppity princess? Or how about the classics...loser, idiot, bitc-"

"How about you just refer to me as Your Highness and you can be my whipping boy?" Joey suggests with a teasing grin. The pair heads outside, laughing together. It has stopped raining, but it's still gloomy and dark. The cold wind is blowing strongly, causing Joey to shiver slightly.

"Whipping boy, eh? Kinky." Joey punches him playfully.

"Hey you guys! Did you get the lab all done?" Joey and Pacey stop in their tracks and turn to the right. Andie is sitting on the railing of the school steps.

"Uh, yeah, it's all done. What are you doing here?" Pacey asks.

"Nice to see you too, Pacey," she giggles. "It's Thursday." She gets a blank stare. "The Olsens come in at 6:30 and take over for the rest of the night? Come on...you love getting the Thursday shift." Pacey nods, giving his girlfriend a half-hearted smile. "So, what took you guys so long? I went to your house, Pace, and I was surprised when your mom said you were still at school."

"Oh, yeah..." Pacey glances at Joey, a bit panicked as he tries to think of a suitable reason. "There was this basketball scrimmage game going on in the gym, so Joey and I hung for awhile and watched. We didn't have anywhere to be, so...yeah."

"Well, that sounds like fun. Thanks for helping him out, Joey." Joey forces a smile.

"Sure, it was no problem...um...I'm going to get going, so...I'll see you guys tomorrow in school." She waves good-bye quickly, not wanting to look at the unsuspecting Andie for another second. Pacey watches Joey go, and then faces Andie.

"So..."

"So. What's new with you?" Andie inquires, perkily, looping her arm through his and giving him a kiss on the cheek. Pacey looks at her a bit strangely...she hadn't been very affection and happy for the past week, and now she was more perky than ever. Walking beside him, she was practically skipping.

Andie tries to calm her nerves; it had to be obvious to Pacey how nervous and guilty she was feeling. She and Dawson had agreed to forget their kiss, but just looking at Pacey shook her guilty conscience. Could she really keep this from him?

*******

"Well, well, well...what have we here?" Abby smiles at the video and takes a seat next to Chris on his bed. They had watched the beginning of the tape, as Pacey and Joey discussed what they were going to do, and then were forced to forward past a good hour of actual work, their spirits starting to fall as the possibility that Pacey and Joey weren't going to do anything was starting to be realized. Then suddenly, the moment came. Abby gazed at the tape as Pacey and Joey continued to stare at one another, saying things lowly that she really couldn't hear. As Joey took a step for the door, Abby pauses the tape and gets herself comfortably situated on Chris' waterbed. Chris smiles faintly as Abby presses play and Joey drops her bag and goes right into Pacey Witter's arms.

"This is going to be better than I thought," Chris smirks. He and Abby watch intently as the couple on-screen tear each other's clothes off, both their eyes widening, not really believing what they're seeing even though it was exactly what they had hoped for. As the sounds from the TV grow louder, Abby and Chris simultaneously tilt their heads to the side, raising their eyebrows.

"Wow..." Abby says. A loud knock on Chris' bedroom door scares them both half to death.

"Christopher, what are you doing in there?" His mother's voice comes through the closed door as she jiggles the doorknob, wondering why it's locked. Abby quickly grabs the remote and turns off the TV, almost dropping the remote in the process. She giggles slightly.

"We're watching TV, Ma."

"What are you watching?"

"Uh...some really bad TV movie," Chris calls.

"Well, I'd appreciate it if you didn't lock your door." Chris doesn't reply, and his mother's footsteps can be heard retreating down the hall from outside his bedroom door. Abby turns the video back on and turns down the volume.

"So, Chris...what do we do with this wonderful piece of homemade pornography now that we have it?"

"Nothing, yet." Chris replies. Abby looks at him, shocked.

"Nothing? This is a gold mine of evil opportunity! Think of it...complete embarrassment, betrayal, broken friendships *and* hearts...hey, maybe we could even blackmail them for-"

"No, don't worry, we'll put this to good use eventually. We just need to get more of it."

"Excuse me?"

"You, Miss Morgan, are now a reporter on assignment. Your job is to dig up all the dirt you can. Follow them everywhere they go, like their shadow. Capture it on that baby," he points to the camera. "You fill up all six hours of this tape with good stuff, and then I'll tell you what we're going to do with it. And you'll love me for it." Chris winks. Abby eyes him, but then nods in agreement.

"Fine. I can't believe I have to do the dirty work...last time I let someone else be the mastermind," Abby mutters. She turns back to the television and gasps. "Yow, Jesus...even I didn't think people could bend that way."

*******

"Bessie! I'm home!" Joey calls. There is no answer. The house is dark, except for the light in the kitchen. "Bess? Bodie?" Joey sticks her head in Alexander's room - he's asleep. Shrugging, she heads up to her room. Opening her bedroom door, she sighs loudly. Joey throws her bag onto her desk chair and takes off her jacket. Then she goes to the closet and starts searching for her pajamas - she's exhausted even just thinking about the events of the day. Seeing Andie sitting in front of the school had almost given her a heart attack.

"Anything you'd like to tell me, Joey?" She almost has another heart attack right there as Bessie's voice smashes against her ears. She whirls around to find her older sister standing in her doorway, looking absolutely furious. In her hands she has Joey's journal.
