Interlude by: Laura

Note From Laura: I've been stuck with this series for a really long time...a year in fact, and I haven't quite known what to do with it. I decided to write this interlude, to at least advance the storyline a wee little bit and give you all something to read until I can decide what I want to do with the rest of the series. Enjoy! -Laura

'Dawson! Dawson, wait a second!" Joey cries out, trying to get Dawson to stop. She had left Pacey behind with little explanation, running after her best friend as if nothing else in the world mattered. At that moment, nothing else did matter. She couldn't begin to imagine how he felt, walking in on them. "Dawson!" He climbs into the elevator and begins pressing the down arrow frantically, trying to get the doors to close. Joey manages to get inside as the doors start to shut, leaving Dawson with nowhere to go. "Dawson." She says breathlessly.

"What the hell was that, Joey? You and Pacey? When did that happen?"

"Um...yesterday?" Joey explains, running her hand through her messy hair. "I can explain."

"It's Pacey, Joey! Pacey! What are you thinking?"

"I don't know what I'm thinking, Dawson. I'm thinking that maybe I like him...I'm thinking that I'm incredibly attracted to him and that maybe I want to be with him, okay?"

"Joey. Your. Shirt. Was. Off." Dawson says tightly. "And two days ago you didn't even think you liked him. This isn't the Joey I know."

"Dawson, I'm changing, okay? I'm growing, I'm getting older. And whether you want to admit it or not, I am a girl, okay? I think about sex just as much as other girls and I have the same...urges that other girls do. And just because you can't bring yourself to look at me as who I am instead of who I used to be, it doesn't mean that I'm going to comply. I'm not going to be stuck in the same rut, playing faithful best friend to you as you pursue Jen. Pacey's pursuing me and frankly, I like it."

"You like it? Joey, you hate Pacey!" The elevator doors ding open and Dawson exits. Joey quickly follows him, not about to let the argument end.

"I thought I did, but I don't! I'm sick of standing around and waiting for you to wake up and realize who I am and what I mean to you, Dawson! Pacey knows. Pacey sees me for who I really am and he likes me. He wants me. Just like I am," Joey tells Dawson, running alongside him until the come to the exit of Sunset Towers, where Sandy opens the door for them.

"What are you talking about, Joey? I know who you are and I know what you mean to me. You're my best friend!"

"No you don't, Dawson," Joey replies, her voice so full of meaning that Dawson stops, turning to look at her.

"What?"

"If I'm just your best friend, then why are you so upset?" Joey inquires, staring at him. "If I'm just your best friend, why did your face fall when you saw Pacey and I on that bed? Why did you race out of there?"

"I was shocked, Joey. I didn't know how to handle it. That's all." They look at each other for a few minutes, neither saying a word.

"Fine," Joey finally mutters. "You know what, Dawson? That's it. I have waited and waited and waited for you to wake up and realize what's right under your nose, but you refuse to. You just go on chasing after Jen Lindley although she wants nothing to do with you while I sit here, so obviously wanting you to chase me. Well, guess what. This is one girl who is sick of sitting around on the sidelines. I've found a different team to play for. A team that has much more to offer me than yours does. So I'm signing on there. For as long as I can." Joey shakes her head sadly, as if pitying him. "Looks like you're going to have to find yourself a new cheerleading section, Dawson."

With that, Joey turns on her heel and heads back into Sunset Towers, past Sandy, who chuckles lightly at the stunned Dawson Joey had left behind.

"She's sure got fight in her," Sandy says to Dawson. "Got a whole lotta fight."

"Yeah, you can say that again," Dawson mumbles, feeling incredibly confused and upset. Had Joey just ended their friendship? What exactly had just happened? Not wanting to figure it out that instant, he decides to go for a walk and get away from Sunset Towers for awhile. Away from Joey and Pacey, away from the whisperings of wonrgful deaths and mysterious wills, away from the endless gossip and countless murmurings of clues and two millions dollars. Exactly when had his world been turned upside down?
