The Day After Part Three by: Tiffany

She knew this conversation was inevitable so she took a deep breath and spoke calmly. "It was the night of a full moon, things unpredictable and unbelievable happened that night, remember? The electricity went out, andthere wasn't even a thunderstorm. And that old man who left the $100 tip." She made a small smile. "It would never have happened on a normal night, trust me. The same would also apply to the kiss."

Jack's smile disappeared and he stepped away from her. "So, you're saying the kiss meant nothing to you at all?"

"Yes, I'm sorry." She answered sincerely and honestly. "I don't feel for you like that. I enjoy talking about art with you but that's as far as it goes. I'm in love with Dawson. I want this clear, Jack." She hoped this would end any feelings he might have developed since that night.

His heart fell, and he realized very quickly when he looked in Joey's eyes, she meant what she said no doubt about it. There wasn't any possibility of anything happening between him and Joey. He would have to accept that.

"Okay, I'm reading you loud and clear." Jack said quietly and felt embarrassed. "The kiss meant nothing and you're in love with Dawson."(school bell rang). "I have to go. But I'll see you at work."

He walked off. Joey watched him leave. Even though she broke up with Dawson, she was happy she had gotten through to Jack with regard to that night, so there would be no misunderstandings. Joey turned in the other direction and bumped into Mrs. Emerson.

"Oh, sorry Mrs. Emerson, I didn't see you." Joey said.

The art teacher smiled at Joey. "I was hoping you didn't leave yet. I have something you might be interested in doing."

"Okay. What is it?" Mrs. Emerson held up a letter to show to Joey. "Read it."

Joey was speechless. She couldn't believe it. A chance to earn $2,000.00 for just a sketch. And my God, she thought, if I win, I could have a full scholarship!!!

"Well, what do you think?" The art teacher asked.

"It's unbelievable. I don't think I have the right words for this. You think I have the talent to enter?"

"I know you do. All you have to do is fill out this application. Here are the rules to the contest and theme of the sketch. When you've finished your sketch, give it to me, and I'll mail it to them."

She looked at Joey with concern. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah, thanks so much Mrs. Emerson. I'll get you the sketch as soon I can."

"Good luck, Joey." She hands Joey the papers will the information and walked back into the art room.

Joey just stood there still in shock, staring at the pages as if in a dream. I can't believe this. She began reading over the papers as she walked out of school. The theme of the sketch is the most memorable moment in your life. The deadline is November 24, 1998. Boy, I have my work cut out for me, Joey thought. She walked down and crossed the street.

"Hey Joey wait!" A voice called from behind her. She turned around and saw Pacey coming up and coming up with him was Andie.

"Hi guys", Joey said smiling. Pacey looked at Joey. Why is she so happy? Dawson is miserable and she's smiling? He shook his head. These two are getting more and more complicated.

"What are you happy about, Josephine?" He started off.

Joey narrowed her eyes. "Pacey, that is not my name, and if you say it again you won't reach seventeen." She looked at Andie. "But beyond that, I have excellent news, I hope."

Andie grins, "Well let's hear it."

"Okay Mrs. Emerson, my art teacher, just told me that I should enter the amateur artists contest sponsored by the Massachusetts College of Art. If I win, I get $2,000.00!!"

"Oh, my God, that's wonderful, Joey." Andie said smiling and rattled on. "That is so great, you'll do this contest, win it. Become absolutely famous, get your own studio, spend your life traveling everywhere in the world, in search of dramatic scenery and be rich. And then you and Dawson will live happily---, Ouch," Andie said aloud.

She looked down and saw Pacey's foot stepping on her own. She narrowed her eyes at him for a moment. Pacey smiled at her, then and Joey.

"Well, I have to get going." Joey said confused.

"I have to think of what I'm going to draw for the contest. I'll see you guys later."

Andie stood in front of Pacey. "And what was THAT (stomping her foot on his) for, Witter?"

Pacey looked at Andie seriously. "Ouch, God I didn't do it that hard."

She crossed her arms in front of her. "I'm waiting."

Pacey put his arm around her shoulders and they began walking through town toward her house. "Andie, I was going to tell you on the way home. Dawson and Joey broke up. Well, I should say Joey broke it off with him last night after the dance. I can't say I even understand why though."

She frowned. "I think I know why."

"Why?" "Well, after you left to dance with Ms. D-cup senior cheerleader. My brother and Joey started dancing, then they went into the hall. I didn't hear what they were saying but Dawson came back into the cafeteria and went to Jack. They began arguing about Jack kissing Joey. My brother, pig-headed and egotistical, typical male, made a comment that he wasn't sorry he did it and would do it again. Then, Dawson punched him!"

Pacey looked at her in shock. "Dawson punched Jack! Oh, he didn't mention this. Wait til I see him again. Tell me was it a great shot?"

Andie shrugged her shoulders. "It was enough to have icepacks on it for hours. Now, it's all bruised. So, yes Pacey, your friend made a good shot."

"You mean to tell me I missed all this action last night."

She threw her hands up. "Yep, you did. Ya see, Pacey you run off and don't stay to enjoy dancing with that D-cup Christie. Sometimes you can be so aggravating and frustrating---."

"And you can be a talkacholic who doesn't take in any air between sentences, we're talking power lungs." Pacey replied.

Andie, "I am not a talkacholic, but you however are witless---"

Suddenly Pacey pulled her close into a sweet lingering kiss. Andie wrapped her arms around his waist and the kiss continued for a few moments. They pulled apart, their heads close. Pacey grinned broadly.

"I couldn't agree more, McPhee."
