Japanese Language

General Grammar

  • A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar - Seichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui, 1996, The Japan Times
  • A Dictionary of Intermediate Japanese Grammar - Seichi Makino and Michio Tsutsui, 1996, The Japan Times

    THE indespensible guides.

  • Handbook of Japanese Grammar - Masahiro Tanamori, 1995, Tuttle

Friendlier appearance and less comprehensive than the above two but well written and still useful at intermediate level.

  • Effective Japanese Usage Guide - 1994, Kodansha

Subtitled 'A Concise Dictionary of Frequently Used Japanese Words and Phrases'. Ecellent content and well laid out and edited, just as expected of any decent language guide.

    Wa and Ga

  • Gone Fishin', New Angles on Perennial Problems - Jay Rubin, 1992, Kodansha International

Clear, logical and entetaining approach to grammar points (to translate the title). Section on wa and ga very useful putting them in the correct perspective, not the perspective that is easiest to teach.

    Pronunciation

  • Pronounce It Perfectly in Japanese - Charles Inouye, 1995, Barron's

This is the good value and useful guide (with tape) on the market but there are others on the market which may be worth checking out.

    Verb Guides

  • The Complete Japanese Verb Guide - Hiroo Japanese Center, 1996, Tuttle

As (or more) extensive as the others on the market. Well presented with useful example sentances.

  • 501 Japanese Verbs - Roland A. Large, 1988, Barron's

Larger format but similar layout to the above. Less verbs and importantly no example sentances. New edition this year!

    Writing

  • The New Nelson Japanese English Character Dictionary - John H. Haig, 1997, Tuttle
  • The Kanji Dictionary - Mark Spahn and Wolfgang Hadamitzky, 1996, Tuttle

Need these two be mentioned, one of which is essential for reading Japanese. New kanji learning book to be published this year by Mark Spahn.

  • Kanji and Kana - Mark Spahn and Wolfgang Hadamitzky, Tuttle

Can be used as a smaller version of one of the above. Also includes stroke order for all of its aprroxiamately 2000 kanji, kana tables and good introduction to Japanese writing. A beginner couldn't start off with a better book. Also available Kanji Study Cards

  • Remembering the Kanji I : A Complete Course on How Not to Forget the Meaning and Writing of Japanese Characters Vol 1 - James W. Heisig, 1990, Japan Publications Trading Co.
  • Remembering the Kanji II : A Systematic Guide to Reading Japanese Characters - James W. Heisig, 1990, Japan Publications Trading Co.
  • Remembering the Kanji III : Writing and Reading Japanese Characters for Upper-Level Proficiency - James W. Heisig and Tanya Sienko, 1994, Japan Publications Trading Co.

I found volume 1 (readings of 2000 kanji) most useful. This book is also recommended by many other people. If you are going to use it follow the guidelines in the introduction and throughout to the letter or the method won't be effective. Volume 2 teaches reading (2000 kanji) and volume 3 teaches reading and writing for another 1000.

  • A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters - Kenneth G. Henshall, 1995, Tuttle

Alternative to the above. Depends on your learning style. Try both and choose for yourself. Between them they are the best two available.

  • Basic Kanji Book Volumes 1 and 2 - Chieko Kano et al., Bonjinsha Co., Ltd.

Probably the best of the rote learning course books. If you use BKB 1 check out this link for my English index of ALL the E-J vocab in the book!

    Link to be added later

  • Remembering the Hiragana : A Complete Course on How to Teach Yourself the Japanese Syllabary in 3 Hours - James W. Heisig, 1990, Japan Publications Trading Co.
  • Remembering the Katakana - Morsbach, Kurebayashi and Heisig, 1990, Japan Publications Trading Co.

If these are as useful as the kanji guides by the same author (which they look to be), then they are a worthwhile investment for anyone starting to learn Japanese writing.

  • Writing Letters in Japanese - Kikuo Tatematsu et al., 1992, The Japan Times

I don't know of any other book which specifically sets out to teach this very important aspect of writing in Japanese. Long lists of example sentances and descriptions of letter structure. Arranged by purpose of letter (e.g. employment).

  • Check here for on-line kanji learning sites.

    Dictionaries

  • Canon Wordtank - Electronic Dictionary

As I've not found any one book format dictionary that is sufficiently concise AND up-to-date I (and many others) use this. Very worthwhile for content as well as the physical size advantage. Also includes extensive kanji dictionary but lookup is slow. As with any dictionary, you won't get the best out of it unless you know how to use it properly!

  • The Oxford-Duden Pictorial Japanese and English Dictionary - 1997, Oxford University Press

Fills an important niche in dictionaries. Easy to locate the right word to use for specialist subjects from sports to botany to hairdressing.

  • Cassell English-Japanese Business Dictionary - Gene Ferber, 1993, Cassell

You may need an English dictionary to explain some of the 15,000 terms found in here. Also has J-E index.

I haven't used the following titles but they are included here as reference for anyone who might want them.

  • Tuttle Dictionary of Legal Terms : English-Japanese,Japanese-English - Richard S. Keirstead, 1995, Tuttle

  • Japanese-English dictionary fundamental 1200 business and banking terms - Keizai Hourei Kenkyukai

  • Interpress Dictionary of New Business and Science, English-Japanese - 1985, French & European Publications

  • New Japanese English Dictionary of Economic Terms - 1985, French & European Publications

  • Japanese Business Language : An Essential Dictionary - Kadri O'Connor, 1987, Kegan Paul International

  • Japanese Business Dictionary : English to Japanese - Boye Lafayette De Mente, 1991, Tuttle

  • Check here for on-line dictionaries.

    Idioms, Onomatopoeia and Mimesis

  • Japanese Idioms - Nobuo Akiyama and Carol Akiyama, 1996, Barron's

With a list of 2000, this is a comprehensive, well presented guide.

  • 2001 Japanese and English Idioms - Nobuo Akiyama and Carol Akiyama, 1996, Barron's

As far as I can see, the content of this is the same as the previous title but with and English-Japanese index, well worth paying that little bit extra for.

  • Flip, Slither and Bang (Power Japanese) - Hiroko Fukuda, 1993, Kodansha International

A guide to 'Japanese Sound and Action Words'.

  • An Illustrated Dictionary of Japanese Onomatopoeic Expressions - Gomi Taro, 1989, The Japan Times

One idiom per page with large cartoon. Useful to copy and stick up on your bedroom wall.

  • Kanji Idioms (Power Japanese) - George Wallace and Kayoko Kimiya, 1995, Kodansha International
  • Animal Idioms (Power Japanese) - Jeff Garrison and Masahiko Goshi, 1997, Kodansha International
  • "Body" Language (Power Japanese) - Jefferey Garrison, 1990, Kodansha International

Three more contributions from the useful Power Japanese series. Plenty of example sentances.

  • 101 Japanese Idioms : Understanding Japanese Language and Culture Through Popular Phrases - Michaell Maynard and Senko Maynard, 1993, Passport Books

Yet another idiom book worth the reasonable price. Includes a picture and English explanation for each item. Also available with tapes.
