Reference and Statistics

  • Kodansha Encyclopaedia of Japan (9 volumes) - 1987, Kodansha

The absolutely ultimate reference on Japan. Library use only, at US$780 is a bit too expensive to add to your own collection. (TIP: Always check here before starting any essay on anything related to Japan).

  • Japan : An Illustrated Encyclopedia (2 volumes) - 1993, MacMillan Library Reference

A condensed version of the previous title with the same high standards.

  • The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Japan - Richard John Bowring and Peter Kornicki, 1983, Cambridge University Press

Although this contains a lot of information, I think it tries to cover too much in too small a book, and is therefore not useful if you want to know about something in depth, uncharachteristic for an encyclopaedia.

  • Concise Dictionary of Modern Japanese History - Janet E. Hunter, 1984, University of California Press

A compact, useful and comprehensive guide.

  • Historical and Geographical Dictionary of Japan - E.Papinot, 1972, Tuttle

An older but still useful reference dictionary on Japan.

  • The Japan Almanac - Asahi Shimbun

Published yearly. Good value guide to all the statistics (and more) you'll need on Japan.
