I'll Never Let Go, Chapter 2I'll Never Let Go, Chapter 2

Zac shut his locker. He was just getting used to public school and all of the things that went along with it. Ever since his mother was diagnosed, he had to attend a regular school, though he got out an hour early because of his college courses.

"Hey, Zac." Tarin, a pretty, flirty girl said on her way past him.

"Hey Tarin." he said flatly, in response. He grabbed his backpack and walked along the corridor and out the doors into the courtyard, which was cold, considering it was November.

The school dance was tonight, and Zac was still deciding whether to go or not, considering that he was going to drive to the hospital and visit his mom after school.

"Zac, wait up!" Zac heard a familiar female voice call.

He turned around. "Cory! Hi!" he said as he smiled for the first time that day.

"Hey, you'd better be careful. You're the only one I let call me Cory instead of Corynne. I wouldn't want it getting around school or anything!" she said playfully.

Cory and Zac had been friends since they were about four, when they met at the neighborhood park. Cory was like Zac's sister, only they looked nothing alike. Cory had long, dark brown hair and huge hazel eyes, unlike Zac's Blond and brown. She was surprisingly tall, for a girl, standing at 5'10, only three inches shorter than Zac's 6'1.

"Well, what's up?" he asked his long-time friend.

"Um, I was wondering if you had a date for the formal tonight." she said.

"Nope. I was thinking of maybe not going." he replied.

"Oh, please go with me! No one's asked me, and I can't go by myself. Can't we go, as friends?" she asked.

"I don't know. I mean, I'm visiting my mom after school today, sometimes I'm really depressed after a visit." he said, unsure.

"I'll cheer you up! It'll be fun." she pursuaded.

"Oh all right." he broke down.

"Well, do you want to drive, or should I?" she asked, referring to the fact that they both had cars.

"Hey, let me drive. You can come over right before and we can go from my house." he said.

"Great, it's a date, then." with that, Cory turned around and walked inside another building, leaving him in the cold.

Diana squeezed Zac's hand. "Hey, the docters say I can come home in a few days." she said, somewhat softly.

"That's great!" Zac said, overenthusiastically. There was a pause in their conversation.

"Zac?" she asked.

"Yeah?" he replied.

"You are worrying me. Don't you have any girls you want to introduce to me? Anyone special in your life?" she asked.

"Mom, you know if there was, I'd make sure you were the first to know. I just haven't met her yet." Zac answered.

"You know Zac, you don't have to try and find the perfect girl in High School. Maybe you have your standards set a little too high." she suggested.

"Maybe." he said, not wanting to disagree with Diana.

"So anything planned for tonight?" asked Diana.

"Um, yeah. Me and Cory-"

"Zac! Cory and I. Use proper english." Diana corrected.

"Sorry. Cory and I are going to the Winter Formal together." he told her.

"Ooo. Zac, do you like Cory? You guys would look very cute together."said Diana, smiling.

"Of course I like her, but not like that, though. We're just going together because neither of us has a date." he informed her.

"Oh, alright. But don't be surprised if you start feeling differently about her. Some of the best relationships start out as friendships, and blossom into romance." Diana said, knowingly, "just look at me and your father!"

"Whatever. Cory and I could never be like you and dad." he argued.

"Well, are you even giving her a corsage?" Diana asked.

"No, I wasn't planning to. She asked me, anyways." Zac grumbled.

"Well, no son of mine is going to a dance and not giving his date- even if she may be his friend- a corsage. I won't except it. Now, you'd better go get ready. Oh, and ask your father for some money for the corsage on the way out." Diana dictated.

"Oh all right, I'll get the corsage." Zac smiled. Even in her hospital bed, she managed to maintain her high motherly post.

"That's better. Now, have a good time." She said kissing him on the forehead."You are all just growing up so quickly!"

"Mom, I love you." Zac said.

"I love you too, son." she said as he walked out of her room.
