April's Resin Ball-Jointed Dolls
BAEKHO'S GALLERY

The Korean BJD Show was held for the first (only?) time in Los Angeles on April 24-26, 2014. It was a fantastic event with 8 Korean BJD Companies and 11 US vendors--mostly artists, designers, sculptors. There were workshops run by various companies-- faceups, face sculpting, wig-making, and panels and special interests/mini-meets, an good-sized sellers room and Opening and Closing Banquets, with each company hosting a table that would have One-Off dolls that were for sale.

I signed up for the Faceup Workshop run by BNB Dolls. The owner started 10 years ago as a faceup artist. She became very well-known in S. Korea under the name of Nornen. Just over a year ago she starts BNB Dolls with a sculptor-partner, making heads. For the KBJD Show they debuted their first body, which is not yet up for sale on their website. The Faceup Class was fantastic.

The next day was the last day of the con and the Closing Banquet. I had already chosen the BNB table because I liked the photos of their One-Off dolls. The theme was Korean Stories and Legends. BNB Doll chose to depict the White Tiger, which is a guardian spirit of the mountains and the West. They created the White Tiger and the Human version.

No one looked like they were going to buy either of these lovelies, so I had to get one: The White Tiger version. Although I really love the Human version, too...

GALLERY

KBJD Show, on display in the Sellers Room: White Tiger and Human Version.

Closing Banquet: Nornen, posing with White Tiger.

Closing Banquet: Displayed on the table.

On the Table.

Box Opening: Rare sight-- a shopping bag instead of a shipping carton.

In the Box, under the old-style pillow, nicely packed bag of clothes, wig, boots, and underneath the doll. The round thing to the left is the wrapped head and you can see the bare feet to the right.

Unwrapped. Stands pretty well. Locks in double-jointed knees. Upper thigh mobility joint. Nice leg/hip join. Elbows, double-jointed. Nicely sculpted and engineered body. Stringing is good.

Belt and belt-decoration (Norigae ???).

Outfit, lined silky pants (Baji ???). They have this interesting seam from the crotch slanting to the left--on front and back.

Lined under-robe, with ribbon ties sewn in.

The semi-transparent, lined over-robe has pleats in the back.

Outer-robe closes with ribbon-ties. Wide silky belt and hanging decoration.

Lined silky socks. Ribbon ties on trousers.

Boots with Crobi logo stamped inside.

Beautiful gradated grey to blue wig.

Faceup, presumably done by Nornen. She does prefer very fine and subtle lip-lines.

Waited for better light the next day.

Love the intense turquoise-blue of the eyes. It works as bits of color in the nearly monochromatic style, and doesn't clash as I would have thought, with the blue hair.

All that white-on-white creates a very ethereal look.

Gorgeous creature.

Wonderful combination of traditional Korean style with fantasy/legend and the modern influences of BJD-styles
