This site is dedicated to the memory of Harry K. Daghlian, Jr., the first peacetime fatality of nuclear fission. On August 21, 1945, Daghlian was accidentally irradiated while performing a critical mass experiment at the remote Omega Site laboratory in Los Alamos, NM (Manhattan Project/Project Y), when a tungsten carbide brick fell from his hand onto a plutonium core. He died 26 days later on September 15 at the age of 24 from acute radiation sickness.
