Asuka Soryou Langley is the resident
troublemaker/ bully (my housemate describes her a "high
spirited") among the EVA pilots. She is bossy, arrogant, and
selfish (I had to get that out!). Constantly harassing Shinji,
she enters the series an orphan and a surprise. She pilots EVA
02, treating it as though it was her own (she consistently refers
to her EVA as being the best). Her first battle comes
the same day that she meets with NERV, it is also the first
underwater combat mission. In another battle she enters a volcano
to retrieve an embryonic Angel (it turns out that she has to
fight it in the hot magma as well). Some would describe her
attitude as annoying (well mostly everybody that I know does),
and it is in my humble opinion that her only fans love her
because of her cute looks.
Early on, she falls "in love" (some would call it a
crush) with Kaji, Misato's old boyfriend -which leads to some
interesting events later on. Living with Misato and Shinji in a
small apartment makes life for Shinji even harder, as he has to
deal with a slob and a bully. Like Shinji, Asuka also comes from
a troubled past and a mysterious backgound.The details of this
are later revealed within the series. All I can say, without
ruining any of the mysteries, is that she has no parents.
Another interesting thing about Asuka is that she is a prodigy. It is revealed that, at her current age of 14, she has already past High School exams. The details of this are given after she helps Shinji understand the concept of thermal expansion. Although she has the brains of an adult and, at times, tries to act as one, one can see her inner child pleading for attention. Even though it seems as though she is spoiled, it is later revealed that she has suffered a lot.
Perhaps one of the more dynamic
characters in Evangelion, Asuka goes through many stages and in
the end, must face an even greater battle within.
In Conclusion, Asuka adds a slight touch of comedy to a series which is ultimately disturbing in nature.
