What Is Axiom 3?

By Joseph Kellard

We at Axiom 3 uphold reason as man's only means to knowledge and, therefore, his only guide to action. Thus, our purpose is to uphold and advance man's absolute use of his rational faculty, the precondition necessary for him to achieve and sustain freedom and all other life-affirming values. Our means to this purpose is Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand ( author of The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged ), according to our broadest, fullest understanding of it. We are students, not authorities, of Objectivism.

Objectivism holds that man's life is the standard of value, and that if each man is to live as a rational being, the only life proper to him, he must choose to observe objective reality, follow reason in epistemology, practice rational self-interest in ethics, uphold individual rights in politics and laissez faire capitalism in economics, and admire Romantic Realism in art. This means that: 1) the physical world is the one and only reality, and man must conform only to its facts, the evidence of which he perceives through his senses and then defines and integrates according to the laws of logic; 2) each individual must be an end in himself, neither sacrificing himself to others or sacrificing others to himself; 3) he needs a government that upholds and protects only each individuals inalienable right to life, liberty, property ( that is earned), and the pursuit of happiness; 4) he needs all forms of art (the last of the main branches of philosophy) to depict realistic heroism, i.e., not things as they are, but things "as they might be and ought to be."

Philosophy is an inescapable part of man's life. All men, whether they are aware of it or not, are guided by certain fundamental ideas. Unfortunately, most men have a mixed philosophy of rational and irrational ideas that clash with each other and thereby cause various degrees of detriment to their lives. The most common irrational ideas are that reality is subjective or unknowable; that faith is a form of knowledge; that self-sacrifice to God or to others is a proper code of ethics; that statism, wherein the State forces the individual to subordinate himself to any collective, is just; and that the mediocrity, determinism, and depravity that Realism dignifies is man's natural, inextricable state.

The superior status in history of Western civilization, the most civilized, life-affirming culture, and of America, the freest and most moral country , are being destroyed by their antagonists and their defenders, both of whom undermine, corrupt, attack and violate their values: reason, objectivity, man-worship, individualism, rights, science, capitalism, industrialization. When people uphold, defend, and/or appease any form of irrationalism as valid or noble, such as supernaturalism, racism, self-sacrifice, anti-hero worship, environmentalism, they are helping to further transform the culture and country of reason toward some form of primitivism and totalitarianism.

Ethically and politically, most Americans--liberals, conservatives, and "moderates" alike--hold a mixed philosophy of self-interest and self-sacrifice, of freedom and statist controls. Generally, they all uphold freedom in realms where it is justified (although on improper grounds), while opposing it in realms where freedom equally applies. Our purpose is to help sustain, develop, and make consistent the rational values and ideas of Western civilization and of our founding fathers through Objectivism, a thoroughly rational, consistent philosophy.

Therefore, we believe that since reason is man's only means to knowledge, all his actions must be judged by how fully and consistently he uses his rationality; and since America, like all countries, consists essentially of individuals who are essentially rational beings with free will, and not essentially deterministic members of a particular collective, such as of gender, race, class, religion, nation, community, etc., all government measures must be judged against the principle of individual rights.
