Graveyard in the Tyrol - 1914

This forboding watercolour was painted in the Tyrol in Austria at the outbreak of the first world war. Sargent travelling without a passport was regarded as an enemy alien and allowed back to England only after many months and the intervention of an Austrian friend.

The delicate detailed crosses are floated upon a mysterious washed out abstract background. This somber painting is a haunting allegory of its time.
