I Knew the World Was Dead

I knew music was dead
When she glommed off his suicide
I knew retail was dead
When recycled jeans cost more than new
I knew literature was dead
When a criminal published from behind bars
and then put it on audio tape
I knew Generation-X was dead
When grunge became more than
what I wash off dirty dishes
I knew poetry was dead
When I tried to culture my little
sister by taking her to a reading
and they declared it "Penis Poetry Nite"
And I knew I was dead
When she told my mom about it
