Page 2 of virtual tour
Now back to Burnt Cabin road south
of the slab, just a little ways there is an old road off to the right that
goes to the old
Whittle place where John Spencer used to live with his family. There
is a little creek by it and if you cross it and go southwest for about
a mile or less you can find the old
Charlie Spencer place. It was just south of Greenleaf creek and across
the creek and just north of it is where the old Indie Spencer place is
located on Cedar Bluff road. Now back to south of the slab where Whiteoak
road comes into Burnt cabin road. Just south of Whiteoak road turnoff on
the west side of Burnt Cabin road is an old road that goes a short distance
to the old
Corneilous Raincrow place. It is on the left side (south) of the old
dim road, then on a little farther on the right side of the old
dim road and out in the woods is where the old
Raincrow cemetery used to be. Now back to the main road (Burnt Cabin)
go south to the south gate at the end of Burnt Cabin road. Just inside
this gate and to the west is the old
Joe and Mary Sanders Raincrow place. Now back through the gate and
go north about a 1/2 mile and on the west side of the road you will see
the turnoff for Black Hollow road which goes west all the way to the south
gate at the foot of Battenfield hill and meets Greenleaf road and then
to the south gate where Small Game road starts. On Black Hollow road starting
from Burnt Cabin road, go a short distance and there is an old dim road
off to the north after you cross a small creek. This old road goes up to
the old John Cookson place that has a big old well and cellar. Back on
Black Hollow road, go on west and you will come to a dim road that leads
off to the north. Take this road about 1 mile or less and there is the
old
Rachel Raincrow place. (Here
for
page 2 of Raincrow place) (We have to walk this one) Back to Black Hollow
road and about a 1/2 mile on the right at the bend in the road is the old
Johnson Silk place. We found and old enamel coffee pot at this old place.
Now go on west to another old dim road leading off to the south (We have
to walk this one too) you can find the old
Charlie and Gracie Warseat Silk place on the left (east) side of the
road. ( Here for page 2 of Charlie Silk place) The old road used to go on south to Perdue church years ago. Back
to Black Hollow road and on west just a short distance and there is an
old road off to the south that goes to where the old David Sanders place
used to be. I can find nothing here except the old Walnut tree that was
north of the place. I went back again and finally found some old rusted
things. A short distance on west and on the left (south) side of the road
is where the old
well of Grant Redfearn place is. Go on a little farther west on Black
Hollow road and on the right (north) there is where Devils
Backbone mountain and those caves are. Then on up the Battenfield hill
back to Greenleaf road. Now we go back to north of the Greenleaf bridge
and across it to the
corner where the old Greenleaf school site is. All that is there are
the old cement steps which have been broken up and pushed back on the property.
There used to be a store across the raod from the school, called Jim Dawes
store. Now turn west on Pumpkin Center road. We go west about 1/4 mile
or less and on the south side of the road there is where the old
Pete Johnson place used to be. He had a store there years ago. He had
a grist mill on the north side of the road. Go on west about 3/4 of a mile
more and on the south side of the road is where Doc Mulls had a store.
An old road goes north from just east of Doc Mulls place, to the old Dewitt
Ballard place. If you go on north the road comes out on Round Mountain
road. But back to Doc Mull's place, then go west a short distance and there
is on the north side an old place and then there is a road going north
to I think it was called the Leonard Curtis place. There is an old drilled
well there. Back to the Pumpkin Center road west of Doc Mulls, go on west
and you will come to Spaniard
creek. Cross Spaniard creek and keep going west until you get to the
west gate at the Cherokee / Muskogee county line. There is a county line
road going north. Just go north about a 1/2 to 1 mile and on the left just
inside the Muskogee side is where the old William
Ballard place is. (Here
for another page, then another page)
Then there is an old road off to the right (east) that goes to another
old William Ballard place on the Cherokee county side. On the Muskogee
county side about 1/4 mile kind of south west of William Ballard place
is where Tom
Ballard and Mable lived and their son, Houston was born here. We found
the old well after Houston came back from CA and told us where it was.
Go north from that old well about 1/2 mile and not far from a little creek
is where another of the John Jack Ballard places was. We found old car
running
boards there. Now go back to Pumpkin center road at the west gate and
go east a short distance. Then go north across the creek (have to walk)
and a little farther is where there is an old cedar tree at where the old
South Ballard cemetery used to be. Now lets go back to the south gate just
south of the bridge and go through the gate onto what is called Small Game
road. If we turn right (west) on what is now called Hayfield road, and
drive just a few hundred feet we will come to the old
Charlie Glass place on the right side of the road. Continue on west
about a mile and on the left is where Little
Charlie Glass place is. There is an old dug well here and part of rock
foundation. There was a little family cemetery east of the house. There
is an old road going to the south just west of this place and it goes to
an old
homeplace ruins. Now go on west from Little Charlie Glass place, (on
past that little road going to the south) and on the left (south side of
the road is the old
Grass Ballard place, used to be called Garfield.
(This was the first old Tuxy Ballard place) There are ruins there and there
used to be a hanging tree. If you go on past this place the road goes south
and then back east making a loop back to Small Game road. (If you were
to go back a short way north and turn on an old road, called Corral road,
going kind of north east and then east you would come on the right, to
the later Tuxy
Ballard place, called the Mary Ballard place.) Now back to when you
come out on Small Game road turn south and just a short way you will cross
Terrapin creek. The road goes up a steep hill after crossing the creek
and about 1/2 mile on top of the hill is an old road going off to the right
(northwest) to a place with lots of ruins. It is the old
Henderson Spears place. (Here
for page 2) Go back to Small Game road from this place and continue on
south west to Persimmon Ridge road, which will go west and east. If you
go west you will come to the Cherokee / Muskogee county line gate which
is no longer open to the other side at this location. Just on the other
side there is a county line road which if taken to the north a few hundred
feet and then back to the west it will take you to Greenleaf creek. Going
back to the gate though, lets go south here and just a little way is a
tiny creek across the road which ran behind my grandma
Nancy Ziegler’s old place. To get to it, just continue on the old road
going south to the top of the hill and on the left (east) side of the road
is where she lived. There is an old cellar there. On the right side of
the road is where the old Conrad place used to be. Going on farther south
to the top of another hill is where my daddy and mama got married in the
middle
of the road in front of the old Cicero Parson place which was on the
east side of the road on the Cherokee county side. Off to the right on
the Muskogee county side about a 1/2 mile or so is where the old
George Conrad place used to be. There is a big old dug well there.
Now lets go back to the old Ziegler place and just north of it a few feet
from where the little creek crosses the road, is where the old Pecan tree
used to be right in the middle of the road where they had picnic’s, preaching
and etc. The roads used to intercept here and off to the west it went and
crossed Greenleaf creek, but now the road is different. You go back a little
way north to the gate and go on north a short distance and then the road
goes west to cross Greenleaf creek. But if you walk north from the gate,
up an old road and around a small pond and keep going through the wood
for about a mile you will come to a bunch of cane growing along the creek.
If you make your way through the cane to the creek you will come to a place
called McCracken
ford where they forded the big Greenleaf creek to get to the McCracken
cemetery or to go on the county line road leading north. The old
McCracken cemetery is on the high bank on the west side of Greenleaf
creek barely inside Cherokee county. (Here
for page 2 of McCracken cemetery) You can get to this old cemetery from
Muskogee side taking what Camp Gruber calls “A” street. An old road that
you can drive for about a 1/2 mile then walk another 1/2 mile to the county
line road then walk south for another 1/2 mile or more. There is part of
the old hinge
on a tree where the gate used to be. But now lets go back to McCracken
Ford on the Cherokee side. We can go east on an old dim road for about
a mile and get to a place where my uncle
Tom Sanders used to live. There is some old ruins there. The old place
is located right on the high creek bank on the south side of the creek.
Some more of my relatives used to live there too and we used to go to visit
uncle Tom when I was a small girl.I was told that we used to go in a wagon
with a team of horses to see them. Now lets go back to the gate at the
county line and since this gate is closed to automobiles, we go back
all the way to the corner north of the bridge where Cedar
Bluff, Greenleaf and Pumpkin center road meet. Go west on Pumpkin Center
road all the way to the gate at the county line just south of the old William
Ballard place. Go on through the gate on Pumpkin Center road about a mile
to North/South road. Turn south on North/South road and go pass “A” street
and on to another gate. Go on through it and you will come to what is called,
“White Rock Y”. There is a fork in the road, to the left curves and goes
back to Greenleaf creek not far from the south county line gate north of
the Nancy Ziegler place and where the old Pecan Tree was. Go to the right
and the road curves around to the west. Go west a short distance and at
the next corner where there is a road going south, if you turn south, there
is where the old Mt.
Zion school used to be. The foundation is still there on the left (east)
side of the road. This is the school site where my daddy went to school.
The old Sallings place was just east of the school site off the south side
of the road. I have not found it yet but plan to soon. I was told there
is an old well there. Now instead of turning on that road, just go on west
until the next corner which is a 1/2 mile. Turn south on this road and
go 1 mile to the next corner and right on the corner on the east side of
the road is where my grandpa lived. Sanders
corner is what it was called. My daddy was born there and the old
cellar is still there. (Here-page
3 and here-page
4 of grandpa's cellar) If you were to go on west (on the old dim road)
instead of turning south to go to grandpa’s place the road would go on
to Little Greenleaf creek and used to go on into Braggs. On the right (north
at this corner) is where the old Pray’s house still is!) But, lets go back
to Sanders corner and if we go west about 1/2 mile to Little Greenleaf
creek there is a little low water dam which was built by the WPA back in
the 30’s. Anyway just before you get to the creek on top of the hill is
where my grandpa
James Louis Dazley (Dazzler) had a house that was rented to the Frank Hinds family.
Now go back east to Sanders corner and go south about a mile or less and
turn back east on an old dim road that is called (by Camp Gruber), “Amphebious
Landing”. Go east down to Amphebious Landing and walk on east on a dim
road a short distance and that is where I think the old
William Hinds place used to be. (Here
for page 2 of Hinds place) Daisy Hinds Cunningham told me where it
was located. The Greenleaf lake is right there to the south and east. Now
go back to Sanders Corner and turn east and go 1/2 mile and you will be
at another corner. The old Elders place used to be near this corner. Now
go north at this corner about 1/4 mile to the top of a small hill and on
the left (west) side of the road is where my grandpa’s cousin Thomas Ditymus
Sanders used to live. Go on north 3/4 of a mile and you will come out at
the corner where old Mt Zion school used to be. Now go on back east and
curve around there at White Rock Y and go north on north/south road all
the way to Pumpkin Center road. Turn east and go about a mile to the county
line gate and through it to the Cherokee county side. You will now be just
south of the old William Ballard well. Go on east on Pumpkin Center road
all the way to the corner of Pumpkin Center, Cedar Bluff and Greenleaf
roads meet just north of the old Greenleaf bridge built in 38. Go south
to and across the bridge and on south to that gate just where Black Hollow
road meets Greenleaf road. Now go through the gate, when and if it is open
and go south all the way to Persimmon Ridge road. Turn east on Persimmon
Ridge road and go until you see a sign on the right (south side) which
will say Yellow Hammer road. Turn right and go south for about a mile and
on the right (west side) of road is the old
Yellow Hammer school site with the old
well with a watering
trough for watering horses. We found the remains of an old
rock outhouse there just recently. I just found another old place recently. It is the old Armine Sanders Summerlin place. There is more exploring I do down
in there but this is enough for this time. Enjoy your Virtual exploring.
