These pages are a compilation of posts from members of the alt.discuss.webtv.html newsgroup. They are all in response to a post from Borg-Collective asking for tips for newbies. Thanks, Borg, for the great ideas and thanks M.A.L.L.R.A.T.S. and other ng members for the great tips! I will try to keep this updated.

From: Borg-Collective@webtv.net Easy "Stuff"

I'm sure there are a lot of newbies just "tuning in" to ADWH. Lets make a list of Easy stuff. After the subject place the name of your easy tip. One tip per post.

  An Example would be <HR> or horizontal rule placing that in your mark-up makes a line. Easy, can you think of some easy "stuff" for newbies? ‹(°±°)›

From: aPirateLksat30@webtv.net Re: Easy "Stuff"(C,C&Paste url's)

Instead of trying to write down and then type in url's for midi's and gif's just C,C&Paste 'em.....

When you find one you want to use just hit your "goto" key click "show last" (for midi's and wav's) "show current" (for gif's ) then hit CMD+A then CMD+C to cut and copy. Go to your sig box, put the cursor where you want it and hit CMD+V to paste it. No more typos that way!

From: FLDAYTON@webtv.net (Fred Dayton) Re: Easy(Frame a Image or Pic)

Using a basic table with bgcolor & border attributes, you can put a frame around an image or picture or even text. Here's the code to duplicate the image below:

<table bgcolor="black"border="20">

<tr>

<td>

<img src="http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Dugout/4117/fredd.jpg" >

</td>

</tr>

</table>

Replace black with color of your choice. Repace 20 with # of your choice for frame size. Good Luck...

From: Kosh46@webtv.net (MsVorlon aka Sgt. Salutation) Re: Easy "Stuff" <!!!

Use <!!! to find your place when editing. Put <!!! just above the area your editing. Use your find button--type in <!!! and hit return--it will take you right to where you want to be. Remember to erase it when done editing. MsV

From: KariLynnB@webtv.net (Kari) Re: Easy "Stuff"(show current)

Ever hit the info button to find out the address of a really cool web site and have it say something like "Anywhere there are monster trucks?"......well, another way to get the addy is to hit your "go to" button and hit "show current" and POOF...there you have it! Hope this helps...Happy Webtv-ing!! Kari (oops, I mean Baric)

From: bobnter@webtv.net (TERRI CONNORS) Re: Easy "Stuff" FOR NEWBIES-CCP EASY DIRECTIONS

From: Larry_1@webtv.net (Iceman) Re: Easy "Stuff"(f-key ADWH)

One of the best places to learn HTML is right here in ADWH....

Save this News Group and put it on an f-key to come on in anytime!! PS the addy can be entered in your go-to box a=by erasing the http:// and putting in news:alt.discuss.webtv.html

I learned most of what I know about html and webtv right here...Thanks to all the OG's and newbies alike!!! Larry

From: cyber-junkie@webtv.net (cyber-junkie) Re: Easy "Stuff"(HR)

Instead of pounding on your keyboard to do the CMD R thing just hit options and click on reload. :>)

Do you have a page at say geocities and you have a url that looks something like this http://www.geocities.com/SouthBeach/Bay/8810/cyberstools/cyber stestbed.html then go to http://cjb.net/ and get yourself a redirect url like this http://daydreamer.cjb.net

From: TommyinOH@webtv.net (Warrant Officer Gungho) Re: Easy "Stuff"(HR)

Want to get to the "end" or beggining of a page in a hurry??? CMD "scrollup"=top CMD "scrolldown"=bottom ARGHHHHH.....   There aint no "scrollmiddle"..... ~LOL~

From: Borg-Collective@webtv.net Re: Easy "Stuff" <BR>

Place this tag <BR>between images to add space between them. You can use as many as you need. Example: <img src="your-image"> <BR><BR> <img src="your-image">

From: BBUSHEY@webtv.net (Bev Bushey) Re: Easy "Stuff"<html></html>

Always make sure you put the opening <html> before everything else, and the closing </html> at the very end of everything.

From: gynot@webtv.net (GYNOT aka Captain Claw) Re: Easy "Stuff"(img size)

If you have an img that you want smaller, you could simply designate a smaller size by adding the width and height you want. If the image is say, 350x350 (pixels), and you want it smaller, add th siz like this <img src="URL_OF_IMAGE" width="200" height="200"> NOTE: Don't use this method to make images larger. It will affect the image itself, and resizing animated gifs, does not always work properly

From: Gnubee@webtv.net (Kent Kyle) Re: Easy "Stuff"(add music)

Add sounds or music to your email or webpage 2 ways:

<bgsound src="URLofAudio" loop="?"> (starts automatically) or

<embed src="URLofAudio" autostart="true" loop="?"> Replace ? with the number of times you want the song to play. For continuous play, use loop="true" If you want a clickable speaker, leave out autostart in the embed tag. Why 2? Some computer browsers read bgsound. Some read embed. WebTV reads both. You can use them both one after the other on a webpage so more computer users will hear your song.

From: scott82@webtv.net (Scott collett) Re: Easy "Stuff"(save cookies)

  When you have the option save cookies. Then what you typed in will be saved for next time.

From: Pwilliamandx@webtv.net (William Ewart) Re: Easy "Stuff"(Obtain URLs)

In order to see the HTML source code of webpages and to find URLs of images on webpages, you need to use a validator such as Madrabbit's TheSource http://madrab bit.net/webtools/source.html

Put the above into a F-key shortcut (help section in webtv favorite folders file area will tell you how to do that) and then when you are viewing any webpage, hit the F-key it is assigned to and the URL will be transfered to The Source. Then hit "View Source" and it will show you the HTML source code. If you want to obtain the URLs of images, hit "View Images" instead. If the URL of the webpage is not transfered to The Source, you can always type the URL of the webpage into the area at the top of The Source.

If "The Source" title does not appear in the bottom bar at the bottom of the tv screen, or if the buttons do not work at The Source, reload reload reload---apparently it's a webtv glitch.

From: Pwilliamandx@webtv.net (William Ewart) Re: Easy "Stuff"(Bounce)

When you bounce an e-mail off of a fake address, it costs that domain money, so try to use one of the methods below instead. Same process for both e-mail and posts: While viewing, 1. Press "options" on the keyboard and then "send" 2. Press "forward" 3. Address it to yourself 4. In body of message, hold down Alt and press A 5. Press return 6. Hold down Cmd and press A 7. Hold down Cmd and press C 8. Go to end of subject line and hold down Cmd and press V 9. Press "send"

And the e-mail or post will return to you with html codes and also the URLs of image, audios, etc highlighted. Or after step 3 above, type into the body of the e-mail <html><plaintext> or <html&g<listing> or <html><xmp> and send it to yourself.

From: Larry_1@webtv.net (Iceman) Re: Easy "Stuff"(HOW'D THEY DO THAT???)

Ever go to a page and wonder how to use that effect on YOUR page?? Although it is unethical to "Steal" code, it IS advisable to analyse code to understand how to program your own pages.. Most programmers are always comparing codes to see how to improve their work...How do you see the codes that make a page work?? Go to this address.... http://a ngelfire.com/il/jan33cop/validate.html

.... and "save" it and put it on an F-key...and then when you are on that "slick" page hit that f-key and off you go...The page is self explanatory... Have Fun!!!!

From: Gnubee@webtv.net (Kent Kyle) Re: Easy(Comment Tag)

You can use a comment tag in your code for notes to yourself or to disable parts of your sig temporarily. Start with   <!-- End with     --> Ex: <!-- These words won't show up on a page -->

From: uncle_john@webtv.net (~~u_j~~) Re: Easy "Stuff"(two entrances to the transloader)

For newbies that have acquired the knowledge to begin transloading.     ------------------------------------- Often the transloader service is busy. I have an F-key for two separate url's for the Star Blvd. transloader. Very seldom are they both busy at the same time. If one is busy, don't forget to hit the back key prior to going to the next so your last visited url will be posted in the first entry block at the transloader site above the teardrop.

Also, always cut and copy using the go to last method described earlier in this thread so you can paste the url in the second entry block below the teardrop in case the transloader doesn't pick up your last visited url for whatever reason, (don't forget to delete the http:// already in that area).

One last thought concerning this process--the transloader will recognize cookies. Be sure to hit save cookies prior to transloading. When you return to the transloader, it will sometimes appear to have forgotten your information. Press cmd+r to reload. Most of the time your data will magically appear. ~~u_j~~ The urls: http//transload.starblvd .net/ or

http//139.223.200.223

From: THE-ENTERPRISE@webtv.net (CAPT. JAMES T KIRK) Re: Easy "Stuff" "hardcopy"

As a "newbie"   I have found that there is just too much information to try to remember, and the postings in the NGs get lost. So I hardcopy everything I think I MAY use in the future. Since we don't have any "memory" in our units it's a way to save some things you may want to go back to later.   I'm a slow learner, and this Reference material sure helps.

From: cyber-junkie@webtv.net (cyber-junkie) Re: Easy Homepages Go here http://homepages.go.com/

and sign up they have a easy to use homepage builder and there is no need for star boulevard or any other transloader because they have their own. It is called the webmover and all you do is enter in the url you want moved and click and it's there.

From: Pwilliamandx@webtv.net (William Ewart) Re: Easy "Stuff"(unsightly bar)

Using an image as a background and you have an unattractive horizontal bar appearing at the bottom of your e-mails?? Add <noembed> before your <body> tag and </noembed> after your </body> tag to get rid of it.

<noembed><body background="URL_of_image" text="color" bgcolor="color"></noembed>

§ From: Pwilliamandx@webtv.net (William Ewart) Re: Easy "Stuff"(grey/blackbox)

Grey/black/white boxes surrounding your images in posts?? Place your codes in a table with the same background image as your body code to get rid of it.

Use a table with the same background image that is in the body tag:

<html>

<noembed>

<body background="URL_of_image" text="whatever" bgcolor="whatever"> </noembed>

<table background="same_URL_as_above" width="100%"> <tr><td>

Rest of your html and image codes here

</td>

</tr>

</table>

Music codes here

</body>

</html>

From: ROCKF0RD@webtv.net (Jim) Re: Easy "Stuff"(add music also!)

You can put a lot of midi's in your "sig" box. You can put this code in front of the ones you don't want to play. EXAMPLE:

<script>url of midi</script>

When you want to change your music, just remove the "script" tags and walla!! Or, as Kent so masterfully said, you can also use these tags the same way. <!--url of midi--> <!--url of midi-->

From: wintermist@webtv.net Re: Start an f-key saver

I amhooked on f-keys.I use three of them now and I am thinking of starting another.There are blank ones ready for you to transload to your site that you can load with your own favorite sites lie the ones I have on my pages below.Go to my links page and you will find some in the f-key pulldowns.If you need a site to put it on I have some sites under webpages where you can pick up free websites.If you want to learn to transload,there are tutorials under transload.I assign these to my f-keys on my keyboard and they save me a lot of time navigating to the places I like to go.Feel free to link to mine.
