Amberle and Lisa waved and said good bye to the group as they headed across the church parking lot and towards their dorms. Both of the young women had backpacks on and overstuffed duffel bags in their hands. They stopped at the crosswalk to wait for a break in traffic. Just as the light turned yellow, a tall blonde man grabbed Amberle around her throat.

She screamed and tried to hit him with her duffel bag, but he just knocked it away. Lisa started screaming for help, but she didn't follow them because of the gun he had pointed at Amberle's head. The blonde man yelled at Amberle to shut up and pulled her down a side street, towards a dark alley between two small buildings.

When she kept screaming, he backhanded her with the hand that held the gun. He heard shouts and turned his head back, never slowing down. At the sight of a dozen or so people running after him, he cursed and fired behind him at the crowd.

He pushed Amberle against the wall of one of the buildings and punched her, telling her again to shut up. When she kept screaming and fighting, he grabbed her forehead and slammed her head against the wall. Just before she blacked out, Amberle heard another gunshot.
