Dr. Mills took charge immediately and told the guys to get out. Nick was the first out, with a stricken look on his face. As soon as the door was closed, Dr. Mills crawled on the bed and put her arm around Amberle's shoulders. Amberle jumped and tried to push her away, but Carol just said softly, "Shh, It's okay. It's just you, me, and Denise. You're safe." She repeated these words for a few minutes while rubbing her back, trying to soothe the crying girl. After a few minutes, Amberle stopped shaking. Shortly after that, she relaxed her muscles a little. "Are you okay?" Carol asked. Amberle nodded slightly. "Can you tell me what happened?" Amberle swallowed, then whispered, eyes tightly closed, "That was him. The blonde man with the gun. He's here." She began shaking again. Carol looked at Denise, who crawled up on the bed and sat next to Amberle. She took one of Amberle's hands into hers and said, "Amberle, can you tell me how old the man with the gun was?" "Um, he was about thirty, I guess." "Well, Nick is 19, and he looks younger than that." Denise said gently. Amberle looked at the woman holding her hand and said uncertainly, "Are you sure?" Denise and Carol smiled, then Denise said, "Yes, I'm sure. Why did you think that was him?" As Amberle answered, they slowly moved her towards the edge of the bed. "He is the exact same height and build. And, his hair is the same." Carol and Denise got off the bed, leaving Amberle leaning against the headboard less than a foot from the edge. "Did you see his face?" Denise asked.
Amberle shuddered and said, "Yes."
"Did you see Nick's face?" Carol asked immediately after.
Amberle looked up from her hands and said "No."
"Would you like to?" Amberle paused, then nodded. Denise went to the door and leaned out, saying "Nick? Can you come here for a moment, please?"
The guys were all sitting in Kevin's room, just across the hall. They had been silent for a while after Amberle had started screaming, then A.J. said, "What happened?"
"It was Nick." Kevin said. They all looked at him as he continued. "I don't know why, but as soon as Nick stepped into the doorway, she screamed."
"Maybe Nick looks like the guy that did that to her." Howie said. They were quiet until they heard the door open and Denise call for Nick.
Nick got up and walked across the hall. Denise gave him a smile he had seen her use on kids about to get a shot. It made him cringe inside. He peeked his head in after her, then walked in the door slowly after not hearing any screaming.
Amberle was shaking a little, but calmed down when Carol held her hand.
"Hi." Nick said, looking at Amberle. He couldn't stop staring at her eyes.
Her bottom lip quivered for a second, then stopped, and she answered, "Hi", looking at Nick's face for a minute, then looking at her hands again.
"Are you okay, Amberle?" Carol asked. Amberle lifted her head and looked into Carol's eyes, saying "Yes" with a sigh.
"Okay Nick," Denise said, "I'll come see you and the guys later."
Nick left the room, feeling dismissed. He walked back into Kevin's room. They looked up at him as he entered and said, "Howie, I think you were right."
"What happened?" Howie asked.
"Well, I went in and she was leaning against the headboard, and Dr. Mills was sitting next to her on the bed. I said 'hi' and she said 'hi' back, then Dr. Mills asked Amberle if she was okay, and she said yes." Nick turned towards A.J. and said, "Then your mother said she'd come see us later, which I took to mean "Go away Now!'."
A.J. grinned, saying, "My mom knows a thousand ways to kick someone out without actually saying 'go away'!"
