3. William Calhoun (1.James1) b. ca. 1718, Donegal Co., Ireland, m. 18 Oct 1749, in Abbeville Dist., SC, Agnes Long, (daughter of Joseph Long and Ann). He was in the Massacre of the Indians at Long Creek, SC, and lost one child and 2 of his daughters were captured by the Indians and held in captivity for many years. He was Justice of the Peace for Granville County and later for Ninety-Six District, SC under the Provisional Government. Agnes: Long is a common English name and families of le Long came to Ireland very soon after the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1172. Longs settled in Ireland from time to time since then, the great majority of Irish Longs are not of planter stock, but descendants of one of several Gaelic-Irish septs. First there was Ó Longaigh, for which Long is the only anglicized form extant, the earlier O'Longy is obsolete. The O'Longs of Cannaway were a considerable sept in Co. Cork, holding lands from the see of Cork including Garrane I Long in the parish of Moviddy. They lost their properties in the upheavals of the seventeenth century, but remained in their homeland in a reduced position and have been numerous in Co. Cork and other parts of up to now. The Longs of Killoran, who acquired the Everard estate there and assumed that name, though remaining Papists, lost it later through the machinations of the Dublin banker, Alderman Dawson.
The Dawson family of Ulster came to Ireland at the time of the Elizabethan wars and settled in Co. Monaghan becoming barons of Cremorne and Dartrey. Another Dawson family acquired large estates around Portarlington; and a third got possession of the Glen of Aherlow in Co. Tipperary from where the the name Dawson's Table in connexion with the mountain Galtee More. Another patronymic for which Long has been used as the anglicized equivalent is Ó Longáin which is properly made Longan or Langan in English. This is the name of two distinct septs: the Langans of Co. Mayo, where that name is mainly found today, are said to be a branch of the Ulster sept of Co. Armagh, now rare in its original habitat but several times mentioned in the Register of John Swayne, Archbishop of Armagh (1418-1439); the family of Ó Longón, who were erenaghs of Ardpatrick, Co. Limerick, and Patrician stewards of Munster (one of whom was Bishop of Cloyne in the thirteenth century), are now called Long, but in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the O'Longan family of Co. Cork were well known as scribes and poets, the most notable of them being Michael O'Longan (c. 1765-1837), the poet of the United Irishmen. His father was Michael O'Longan (d. 1770) of the well known Croom poetic circle, and his sons Peter, Paul and Joseph were all engaged as Irish scribes.
One other surname remaines to be noted in connexion with Long, Fodha. This is simply the Irish word fada, meaning long or tall, written phonetically; it occured in the modern Co. Waterford birth registrations and is a surname of the adjectival type like Bane, Crone, Lawder, etc., where an epithet has superseded a regular Mac or 0 name.

"John McWhorter, eldest child of David and Mary Posten McWhirter, was born in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania, on 30 Oct 1768. Like his father, he followed in the blacksmith trade. In 1795, he moved to Cane Creek in the Abbeville District of South Carolina where he married Miss Elizabeth Willson (called Anderson). Elizabeth was the third child of James Willson and his wife Martha Calhoun. She was five years of age when her father was killed at the Battle of Cowpens on 17 Jan 1781. Her mother was the daughter of James Calhoun, Sr. And a first cousin of John C. Calhoun. Four years after the death of her husband, Martha Willson married William Anderson (whose surname was adopted by her four children).
"The true facts of Elizabeth's real parentage have only recently come to light, through the research of a descendant, Mrs. Shelly McWhorter Wright. At an unspecified date in their marriage, it was learned that William Anderson had a former wife, still living, from whom he had not been legally divorced, so Martha left him. In 1831 (at the age of 80), she petitioned for reinstatement of pension as the lawful widow of James Willson. Her case was complex, since she applied for retroactive annuities covering a forty-year span (1735-1825), pleading a victim of duplicity and ill health, poverty & sufferance, as well as having been robbed by the Tories of her property and her slaves. She was ultimately denied retroactive annuities, but reinstated by approval of the State Legislature, House & Senate, for current annuities effective December, 1824. Since her petition makes for interesting reading, a copy is appended to this section of the genealogy.
"John and Elizabeth (Willson) McWhorter settled on a land grant of one thousand acres at Pickens (now Oconee County) South Carolina, in 1805. In that year, John became a charter member and Co.-founder of the historic Bethel Presbyterian Church above Walhalla. He subsequently became a ruling Elder and Clerk of Session. Elizabeth died on July 10, 1840, and was buried in the Bethel Church Cemetery where her grave marker still stands. John moved to Walker County, Georgia, following his wife's death, and died there on February 19, 1855, where he was buried at Fairview Cemetery (five miles south of Lafayette, at the foot of Pigeon Mountain)."

This page contains a brief summary of each direct descendent of Rev. John Waugh (1630-1706) up to John Alexander Waugh (1814-1896).
Rev. John Waugh was b. Tyrone Co., Ireland and was an angelican minister of Overwharton Parish in Stafford Co. Virginia. He was in Scotland before coming to America. An abstract of the will of David Waugh, planter, of Stafford Co. Virginia written Dec. 27, 1692 aboard a ship, the Elizabeth of London, states he bequeathed his entire estate to his brother, Peter Waugh, a sailor in New Castle upon the Tyne. It is probable that the testor was a brother of the Rev. John Waugh but so far there is no positive proof. Records show that Elizabeth Waugh was the wife of Rev. John Waugh from 1674 to 1691. She may not have been the Mother of his first two sons, Joseph and John as they seem to have been favored with an equal division of two of his most valuable tracts of land, and they were considerably older than the other children. Rev. John Waugh was married to Christian (surname unknown) in 1702. She had no children by Rev. John. Included in the land holdings of the Rev. John Waugh was 6,350 acres on the headwaters of Potomac Creek which he patended in 1691. Rev. John Waugh lived in Westmoreland, Stafford Co., Va. and was fined 10,000 pounds of tobacco for marrying a couple without a license duly obtained. Also it seems that the Rev. John didn't behave suitly to a minister in his day so he was fined, paying all the costs in 1674. The fine was paid to the parish he formerly served. He was sued by a fellow and he wrote this person telling him he couldn't appear in court because his horse ran away. Also in Virginia, absurbed rumors were circulating of terrible plots of the Catholics of Maryland and the Indians. The county of Stafford was inflamed by the harangues of Rev. John Waugh.
Alexander Waugh (166--1744) ; Alexander appears to have been the third son of the Rev. John. He married Catherine Webb in 1703. Diana Webb made a deed of gifts of various chattels to her daughter Catherine Waugh. In 1707 planter, Joseph Waugh of Overwharton Parish made a deed of gift for 1,200 acres of land to his brother Alexander, describing it as part of 6,350 acres on the head of Potomac Creek which was patented by their late Father. On Oct. 1707 Alexander Waugh, planter of Overwharton Parish conveyed this land to his brother-in-law George Mason.
Alexander Waugh Jr. (1734-1793); Alexander Jr., son of the above Alexander seems to have been the overseer of Colonel Hohn Talisferro of Spotsylvania County Va. at his plantation in what is now the county of Orange. Theophilus Eddings conveyed to Alexander Waugh, 230 acres in the fork of the Robinson river. There was also made a lease of 150 acres in Orange County for the natural lives of Alexander and his wife Sarah and his son Richard. There are many records of this family in Orange and Culpeper Counties.
