Proofs have rust pits on Liberty's upper neck. A triple-struck proof exists (with the coin rotating slightly between strikes).

David Lange of NGC writes "In the year 1876... the United States celebrated the Centennial of its independence with a great exposition at Philadelphia. More than the usual number of proofs were sold, many visitors to the fair evidently stopping by the U.S. Mint." The 1876 Liberty Eagle had a comparitively high Proof mintage, although the business strike mintage is extremely low.
