COSA Minutes Oct. 2002

Seven members and four visitors present at D & J Music in Redmond.

New business: Allan introduced three separate motions all having to do with the new Bend Commuity Center.

Motion #1 asked that COSA move its meeting location to the Center in Bend and its start time to 2 p.m. It passed unanimously.

Motion # 2 asked that COSA present a monthly Songwriters’ Showcase after each meeting at the Center beginning at 6 p.m. the same time as the weekly open mic schedule. This would be a fundraiser for COSA with an admission charged of the public. First meeting at the new location followed by the Showcase would be Nov. 24th. Members discussed whether to have dinner at the center (a pot-luck) or to have a dinner break (food will be served at the Center but may not be available before the 6 p.m. start time). The motion passed.

Motion #3 proposed that COSA host a monthly open mic at the Center the fourth Thursday of every month. Much debate on this motion. It failed. Consensus was simply that it was too much of a commitment for COSA. COSA members did pass a sub-motion amendment that COSA will serve as the “back-up” open mic host in the event of sickness or other problems with the regular hosts.

BCC events were highlighted by Allan who is the new Music Coordinator at the facility. Several COSA members are already acting as open mic hosts. Barry Stranahan and Christen Hawkins will host the frist Sunday open mic every month. Dennis and Ellen Jakab will host the second Sunday every month, and Rick Miller will host the third Sunday every month. Autum Lascurain plays one of the debut shows there Sat., Nov. 2nd with Matt and Allan opening for her. Dan Chavers plays Sat, Nov. 9th. with Autumn oening for him. Barry Stranahan and Christen Hawkins play Friday, Nov. 15th. Allan Byer and Matt Engle play Sat. Nov. 16th. Get out and support these COSA artists as well as all the other performers at the Center every Friday and Saturday night. Open mics are every Thursday and Sunday evenings.

Matt volunteered to chair a committee on involving local youth in our Song of the Year Contest and spoke at some length as to the importance of involving the community via this outreach. He will report back next meeting on his progress on contacting local music directors in central Oregon High Schools.

SOTM - Because we did not vote for an Aug. SOTM due to our pot-luck dinner party on that date, we selected two winners at this meeting. Autumn’s “You and I” is the official Aug. winner while Lois Webb’s “Halloween” took Oct SOTM honors. Dennis Plant (“All I Ever Wanted”), Allan Byer (“Pilgrim”) and Rick Miller (“Judgment Day”) also entered songs.

Workshop, with several songs shared, followed. Our visitors included: Shane Lascurain, Les Buystedt, Steve Kulin, and Amanda Rector.

Next meeting is Sunday, Nov. 24th, 2 p.m. at the Bend Community Center, 1036 NE 5th St. in Bend, followed by the Songwriters’ Showcase at 6 p.m.
