In the name of god amen The xvijth daye of Marche in the yere from the Incarnation of our lord Jesus Christ a Thousand five hundreth and fiftie / And in the fyste yere of the Reigne of our Soveraiyne lord Edward the Sixte by the grace of god Kinge of Englande ffraunce and Ireland defender of the faithe and in earthe of the churche of England and also of Ireland the supreme hedd / I Chr'ofer Nevinson of Addisham in the countie of Kent Doctor of the civill lawe borne at Briggende in ye p'ysh of Wedrall and countie of Cumberland do ordayne and make this my present Testament and last will in manner and forme folowing / ffirst I bequeathe my soule into the handes of my Redeemer and onelye Savior Christe Jehus by whose mere mercie & bloude shedinge I truste only to be savyd. And my bodye to be buried in christen manner buryall at the discrecion of my wief Item I give and bequeathe to Anne my said wief my standing Cuppe of Silver and gilt with a cover my best Salte Sixe silver spoones an olde Sovrant three olde Angells one olde Ryall one newe Angell / two frenche cronats / my bed stedle in the greate parlor with the sealer and testar of grene sylke and vallance for the same and curtanne of Sarcenett / . Item I give and bequeathe to Thomas my sonne my boll of silver duble gilte weying twentie ounces / my seconnd salte duble gilte Sixe silver spoones / two old Rialls foure olde Angells three newe Angells. two old coron Roset / two frenche crownes old my two Rings of golde my cheyne of Angel(?) golde weight aboute tenne ounces. Except five and thirtie Linckes therof which I give to my said wyfe Item I give and bequeathe to my saide sonne Thomas the bedstedle in the greate chamber with the sealer testar and vallance upon the same of blewe velvet and clothe of golde / and the curteynes for the same of blewe yelowe and Redd sarcenett and my steell cheste and all my books / Item I give and bequeathe to my doughter Jane my silver potte duble gilte with the cover / my thirde Salte gilte one old Ryall two olde Angels one newe Angell / the bed stedle in Mr. Brooks house at Canterburye, the sealer testar and vallance of silke in the Chappell, a fetherbed. A bolster, two pillowes, two pillowebeers, a paire of blanketts, two payre of sheets a coveringe Item I give and bequeathe to the childe my wief goeth with all yf she be with childe / my white silver potte, my fowerth salte of silver, one olde Angell / Item I give and bequeathe to my uncle Richard Nevinson my clothe gowne faced with satten / Item I give and bequeathe to my cosyn Alexander Nevinson my best cote of pewke, and a dublet of crymsym satten and to John Nevinson his brother my freeas doo cote and a fustian dublet Item I give and bequeathe to my cosen Steven Nevinson Mr. of Arte at Cambridge my bussells frocke furred and faced with budge my Canneypie of silke with curteynes of grene sarcenet a fether bed a boulster a payre of blancketts a coverlet and my institutes in greeke / Item I give & bequeathe to my brother Roger Nevinson anewe Cote of blacke clothe at tenne shillings the yarde & fourtie shillings in money Item I give and bequeathe to my brother John Nevinson anewe blacke cote of clothe at tenne shillings the yarde amd twentie shillings in monney./ Item I give & bequeath to my brother Richard Nevinson anewe blacke clothe cote at tenne shillings the yarde and twentie shilllings in monney / Item I give and bequeathe to the poor parisheners where I was borne fourtie shillings in money to be distributed there at the discretion of Mr. Richard Salkeld my uncle Richard my brother Roger and the churche wardens there / Item I give and bequeathe to my cosyn James Nevinson three shillings four pence / and to Mawde that was my uncle Richards servante at my cominge to Cambridge iij s iiij d / Item I give and bequeathe to Robert Stamper my servante my gray gelding called philpott anew black coote at tenne shillings the yarde fourtie shillings in money and the lease of Henforde after my mother Monnynges death / Item I give and bequeath to my Cosyn Thomas Nevinson my lease of the parsonage of Hedcron / Item I give and bequeathe to my saide wief th'one half of all my household stuf not bequeathed / And thother half to my sonne Thomas to be equallye divyded between them / And the Residue of of all my moveable goods I give and bequeathe to my saide wief my debts and legacies first contentyd and paide / Except my leases and Indentures which shall remayne as hereafter ys disposed and ordeyned Item I give and bequeathe to the parsone of Saint Elpphus in Cannterburie my clothe gowne faced with damaske and a black satten dublet / And to the vicar of River my other black clothe cote /. Item I give and bequeathe to Mr. Blande parson of Addisham my black satten jacket and a black satten dublet / Item I give and bequeathe to my said wief during her lief the lease of the parsonage of Addisham and Chappell of Stapell / the lease of Beytinershe the parcell of the manor of Wingham Barton, the lease of the parsonage of Goldstonton the lease of Bosington, the lease of the parsonage of Goodneston, the lease of the parsonage of Nonnyngton, and the lease of the porcion of Well within the parish of Addesham / All whiche leases of Addesham Goldstonton Bosington Goodneston Nonnyngton and Well, I will shall remayne to Thomas my sonne onely Immediatlye after the deathe of my saide wief, during my yeres then to come, yf the childe my wief goeth withall be a doughter / but yf it be a sonne and lyve / Then the sayd leases to be equally devyded betwene them after my said wiefs deathe / And yf one of them shall dye withoute heyres of his body lawfully begotten, the other to have all the foresaid leases / And yf bothe my said sonnes ( If I have two or one). If I shall have but one fortune to dye without yssue of their or his bodye Lawfully begotten / Then I will the said leases of Addesham parsonage of Bosington and Goodneston parsonage shall remayne after my wiefs decease to my brother Roger, Rowlande and Humfrey his sonnes /. And in their defaulte to my brother John and his sonnes / And in their defaulte to my brother Richard and his sonnes / And in their defaulte to my cosen Steven, and his sonnes /. And the said leases of Nonnyngton and Goldstonton, if my said sonne or sonnes shall fortune to dye as before, I will shall remayne after my said wiefs deathe to my doughter or doughters / Item I will and ordeyne by this my testament and last will that my said wief during her lief, And after her deathe those to whome my said lease of Addisham parsonage aforsaid, shall come and remayne / shall yerelie during the yeres of the said lease, cause one Sermonde to be made in the parish churche of Addesham and another in the parish churche of Staple and shall give the preacher for every Sermonde vj s viij d / And shall bestowe upon the poore people of the said paryshes at every Sermonde in the presence of ye churche wardens vj s viij d / Item I give and bequeathe to my Sonne Thomas Nevinson my lease of the Mannor place at Wingham and of all landes belonging to the same / the lease of the site of the Mannor of Eastrie and of all landes apperteyning to the same / And the lease of the Mannor of Ratlinge and the marsh in Wickham valley and all the interest which I have by indenture of lease in the landes apperteyning to sainte Stevens Chappell at newe Romney in Romney marshe belonging to Magdalens Colledge in Oxforde. and to the childe my wief goeth withall (yf she be with childe) and the same a man childe, I give and bequeathe my lease of the site of the Mannor of Tenham / and of all the landes belonging to the same / either of my said sonnes to be others heire / And if my wief be not with childe) or yf she be with childe and bringe forthe a doughter, Then I give and bequeathe my said lease of the Manor of Te[y]nham to my said sonne Thomas Nevinson / Provided alwaies and I will give and bequeathe to my doughter Jane all the profytts of the said lease of Wingham Mannor duringe and for Seven yeres next and Immediatly after my decease, the same profitts and other things to her given to be safelye kepte for her, and payde to her at the daye of her marriage or at the xviij th yeare of her aige at her election / Item yf my said wife be with childe and she same a doughter and lyve, I will and bequeathe to my said doughter the profytts of the saide Lease of Wingham Mannor, during and for Seven yeares /. the same to be gy[ve]n at thend of the yeares that my doughter Jane must have the profetts therof as is before saide / And I will the saide profytts and other things to her given, shall also be safelie kept for my saide doughter and paid to her at the daye of her marriage or at the xviij th yeare of her age at her election And yf it shall fortune my said doughters or one of them to dye before they be married or come to thage of xviij th yeres as ys before said / Then I will the money receyved of the said lease of Wingham for them / or one of them, shall remayne to Thomas my sonne. And from thensforthe th'ole profytts of the said lease to remayne to hym /. Item I wishe that he or they whiche shall marrie any of my doughters shulde make to her or theym fortie pounds a yere Jointer Item I will that the monney receyved or other things to them given and bequeathed eithe for my sonne or sonnes, or my doughters or doughter, shalbe safelie kept and put to the most profett and increase that can lawfully be unto suche tyme by this my testament and will it ought and shulde be paide to theym or any of theym./ Provided alwaies and I will that if it shall fortune hathe my sonnes (if I shall have two to dye without yssue of his or their bodies Lawfully begotten / That then the lease of the Mannor of Wingham aforesaid and Sainte Stevens Chappell, shall remayne to my saide wief during her lyfe / And after her death to my doughters or doughter and their children Lawfully begotten / And for lacke of them to my brethern and their sonnes / And for lacke of them to my cosen Steven Nevinson And the lease of the Mannor of Tenham [Teynham] and the lease of the Manor of Eastrie for lacke of my sonne or sonnes or his or their child or children, shall remayne to Roger Nevinson John Nevinson and Richard Nevinson my brothern, and their sonnes / and in their defaulte to my cosin Steven Nevinson / Item I will that my doughter Jane shall have fyve pounds yerely, to fynde her withall oute of the lease of sainte Stevens Chappell unto she come to xviij th yeares of age (if she lyve so longe) or ells to cease Immediatly after her death / And to my other doughter to fynde withall / if my wief be with childe and bringe forthe a doughter, other fyve pounds yerelye oute of the said lease of Seynte Stevens Chappell, unto she come to the age of xviij th yeres (if she lyve so longe) yf she dye before she be xviij th yeares of age, then the same to cease Immediatlye / Item I give and bequeath to my brother John Nevinson the lease of Tyknes in the parish of Norbourne / And to my brother Richard Nevinson my lease of Mayes in Heron [Herne?] / Item I give and bequeathe to my brother Roger Nevinson, and to Humfrey and Rowlande his sonnes my lease of Masondyeubrokes in Romney marsh and of the parishe of Rockinge /. And I will that my said brother Roger and his said sonnes, shall yearely during the yeres of the said lease of Masondyeubroks, paye to my brother John Nevinson and his sonnes thirtie shillings And to my brother Richard Nevinson and his sonnes yearelye twentie five shillings / And if my brother Roger Nevinson and his said sonnes shall fortune to dye withoute issue male of his or their bodies or bodye Lawfully begotten / Then I will the said lease of Masondyeubroks, shall remayne to my said brother John and his sonnes ; the payinge my saide brother Richard and his sonnes yerely, during the yeares fourtie shillings /. And yf it shall fortune my saide brother John and his sonnes to dye withoute yssue male of his or their bodie or bodies Lawfully begotten / Than I will the said Lease of Masondyeubroks shall remayne to my brother Richard and his sonnes paying yerely during the yeares to thother children of my brothers Roger and John fower poundes / and yf it shall fortune my said brother Richard and his sonnes to dye withoute heyres male of his or their bodie or bodies Lawfullye begotten / then I will the said lease of Masondyeubroks shall remayne to Steven Nevinson my cosyn / Item I will that my said brother Roger nor his sonnes, neither my brother John nor his sonnes nor my said brother Richard nor his sonnes shall bargayne, sell, or by any other wise alienate, the said lease of Masondyeubrokes during the yerears (excepte he or they bye so much Lande in Cumberlande or Westm'lande as shalbe worthe by the yeare fourtie shillings) the same lande to be entayled as the said lease ys in this my present testament / Item I will that my said wief shall have during the tyme she shall Remayne my widowe the bringing upp of my sonne or sonnes, and custodye of their goodes landes and hereditaments, unto he or they come to the age of twentie & fower yeares yf he or they be not before that tyme maried, And my said wief live so longe and still continue a widowe, she fynding my sonne Thomas or sonnes, yf I shall have m... as before / well sufficientlye and continuallye at some good gramer Scole or Scoles, until he or they come to the age of xiiij th yeares, and from thens forthe until he or they come to the age of Twentie and foure yeares, at the universitie of Cambridge or Oxforde / and the costodie and bringing up of my doughter or doughters and the custodye of her or their goodes unto she or they come to the Age of xviijth yeares or be maried Provided alwaies and I will that if my said wief shall fortune to marrye that then and from thensforthe Steven Nevinson shall have the bringing upp of my sonne or sonnes and the custodye of his or their Landes & hereditaments and other his or their goodes whatsoever / unto he or they come to the age of xxiiij yeres or shall be maried / Praying hym to kepe my said sonne or sonnes at the Scole and universitie in manner and forme as I have appointed my said wief / And ye custodie of my doughter or doughters goodes, unto she or they come to th age of xviij yeares, or be maried. I will also the said Steven Nevinson shall make a good and parfyt accompte of his administracon before thordinarie of the diocesse, or other competent judge in yt behalf / And I ordeyne constitute and make my said wief, and the said Steven Nevinson my Executours / And I give to the said Steven Nevinson for his paynes, unto my said sonne or sonnes come to twentie and fowre yeares of their age or be maried / fourtie shillings yearely (yf my said wief so longe contynewe a widowe and lyve / And if my said wief marrie or dye before the said twentie and fower yeares or mariage of my said sonne or sonnes, That then and from thensforthe unto my said sonne or sonnes come to the age of xxiiijth yeares or their mariage / I will the said Steven Nevinson shall have yerely fyve poundes, praying hym most hartelie to be good to my wief and my children in bringing them up, and savinge their goodes from Raveners, and that he will do soo much for me as to take upon hym th'execution of this my p[rese]nte testament and last will And I make my overseers my good lorde of Cannterburies grace Mr Hewe Cartwright And I give and bequeathe to my said lordes grace my Red gelding whiche I use for mine owne saddell, and the episells of Thomas Beckett and sainte Anselme written in parchement moost humble praying his grace to be good lorde to my wief and my children as his grace was to me most bountiful in my lief tyme, so his grace will be good to me in my wief and my children after myn deathe / And I give to Hewe Cartwright to put hym in remembrance to be good to my wief and my children his cosens fourtie shillings / Provided alwayes and I will, and by this my present testament ordeyne, that yf my said wief shall at anny tyme goo about to lett hynder or interuptt the execution and fulfilling of this my testament and last will, or anny parte or portion of the same according to my meynyng and entente or shall do or suffre to be doon anny thinge in her name or by her defaulte wherbie anny gift or legacie in this my present testament and last will given and bequeathed, shall not take his full effect and strengthe, or that she my said wief shall not make over from her to my sonne Thomas, or in his defaulte to my other sonne or doughter or doughters, a clere free and a perfect and Lawfull gift, or Surrender in wryting under seale of the title enterest and Demand that she shall fortune to have by my deathe in and to the leases of Wingham afore saide , and all the landes belonging to the same and of the parsonage of Nonnyngton within one monthe next and Immediately after my deathe / That then and from thensforth all suche giftes Legacies & bequests as I have before geven and bequeathed to my said wief shalbe utterlye voide frustrate and of none effect to all intents constructions and purposes, and shall remayne and be to Thomas my sonne in as ample and Large manner and condicon as thoughe I had puerlie geven the same lease and other things to hym or theym at the fyrst and as there hadd never been mention made of my said wief in this my present testament and Last will; The same to be in Reversion after his or their deathe as is before declared in other leases / Item I will that this my testament and last will shall be after the prose therof be written in three copies of parchment and the ordinarie seale or usuall seale and competent put to every of the saide copies wherof. I will one shall remayne in thands of my said wief, another in thands of my said cosyn Steven Nevinson, and the thirde in the custodie of my brother Roger Nevinson the same thirde copie also to be faithfully Registred in the Register at Karlyell./ This ye the last will of me the saide Chr'ofer Nevinson as concerning all my lands tenements and other hereditaments whatsoever in the Countie of Kent or ells where / ffirst I give and bequeathe to Thomas Nevinson my sonne and to his heyres males forever of his bodye Lawfully Begotten my garden at Sandwiche two acres of land at Stelling, and all the tithes of the parishes of Nonnington and the Late Chappell of Wymynges Wold, and the parysh of Goodneston nere Wynghm And yf it shall fortune my said sonne Thomas to dye withoute heyres male of his Bodye Lawfully Begotten, Then I will the saide Landes and tythes shall remayne to my other sonne and to his heires male of his bodye Lawfullye begotten forever / yf my wief be with child and bringe forthe a sonne) And for lacke of them bothe and their heires male / Then I will the saide Lands and tythes shall remayne to my doughter or doughters yf my wief bewith child and bringe forthe a doughter during their lyves And after her or their deathe or deathes, to remayne to my brother Roger Nevinson / and his sonnes Rowlande and Humfrey, and their heyres male of their bodies Lawfully begotten forever / And for lacke of them and their heyres male too my brother John Nevinson and his sonnes and their heyres male of their bodies Lawfully begotten forever / And for lacke of theym and their heyres male of their bodies Lawfully begotten, to my cosyn Steven Nevinson and his heyres male of his bodye lawfully begotten forever / Witnes hereof Edmunde ffarley p[ar]sone of greate Mongtham John Orgraver vicar of Eastrie William Beremell vicar of Asshe Humfrey Chirden parson of Saynt Elphus in Cannterburie Probatum in Latin
