Will of John Parker of Southampton

LAST WILL and TESTAMENT of JOHN PARKER last day of August 1612.

In the name of God Amen the last day of August 1612 and in the tenth year of the reign of our sovereign James by the grace of God of England and defender of the faith....I John Parker of the town and counties of Southampton being sick and weak of body but of the transitory state that all peace and yield to death must... when it should please the lord to call me first I make this my last will and testament... I give a commanding seal(?) to Lord Jesus Chriss resurrection (according to this expert this is a sure sign that he was a Puritan)...my body to the earth to be buried according to the executor hereafter named...Item I give to the cathedral of Winchester 12 shillings...Item I give to five poor men of the town of Winchester the sum of five shillings to be paid Good Friday in the year out of my messuages in the Parish of All Saints within the town of Southampton in the tenure of John Sutton (tenant)....payable and my heir to be chargeable herewith and shall be chargeable forever....Item I give to Mary (Marie) my wife eight pounds per annum out of the marriage in the parish of St. Michael's...Item I give ....Hugh (this was crossed out then) Thomas SMITH clerk of the parish of St. Lawrence of said town 5 shillings........my Will all shall be equally divided....all my goods and chattels and implements between said executor....Mary (Marie) my wife she shall have two rooms either in dwelling house of St. Lawrence or tenement of my orchard called Kings orchard in St. Mary's Parish in the County of Southamptonshire her choice... Item one silver bowl called drinking goblet and 120 shillings to Elizabeth my daughter and Wilmot (this was unusual name for a girl he said) RUMBOLL daughter of Frances RUMBOLL and Elizabeth my daughter 20 marks Sterling to be paid unto her at age one and twenty years or at day of her marriage... Item to all of my godchildren in Southampton or elsewhere I give 2 shillings and 6d a piece....I will and bequeath device all my lands and tenements hereitments(?)....in Southampton or elsewhere I give unto Goorge(his spelling) PARKER my son and his hands forever...Item all my goods and chattels my debts paid and expenses discharges to Goorge PARKER my son I ordain and appoint my Executor... I ordain and appoint overseers for the execution ...(this was standard practic to make sure his last wishes were carried out)...Angelo STONER Henry MYERS the sum of twenty shillings apiece for their pain...Item I give in Remembrance to my cousin Margerie CARPENTER six shillings eight pence....Item to my sister Margorie PIKE and Margaret Peirce (Clerks spelling) to each twelve shillings and four pence a piece and to each of them one of my gowns apiece...hereby renouncing and revoking all and every former will and testaments legacy bequeath and bequest before me here bequeath in true testament herewith I the said John PARKER Cyr unto set my hand and seal....written in the presence of these witnesses...Item I give to each of my servants twelve pence apiece...signed John PARKER (no signature, he did not sign, he left his mark).
