Welcome to the Mako reactors, with one located in each sector, where Mako is processed and and turned into materia, let's begin our tour here. This is the bridge leading to the main valve and pipes of the reactor itself. The maintenance crew crosses this bridge to control the pressure of the mako running through the pipes.
Located east of the bridge is where the workers control the power output, pressure, and drainage of the harvested Mako. The power output determines the speed at which the Mako enters the valves, if it goes too fast, the Mako will over pressure the pipes and the tanks and will result in a Mako-Meltdown. By draining the Mako back into the lifestream, the valves can restore the pressure of the pipes and allow more Mako to pass through. The Mako tanks and only hold up to 100,000 gallons of pressurized Mako and the excess Mako needs to be drained or the tanks will explode and cause a meltdown.
Mako runs throughout approximately 1000 pipes per reactor and goes into 500 tanks. With the efficency of the new pipes, about 150 gallons of Mako is deposited into a single tank per second. The pipes are held together by a strong alloy that prevents the Mako from leaking or bursting out. One end of the pipes are connected to the lifestream, another end drains into the tanks and another end drains excess Mako back into the lifestream. The Tanks store the Mako and pressurizes it until it is ready for use. About 100 gallons of new Mako are pressurized every second.
Mako Reactor workers always take the most precautions in case of a meltdown. The only escape routes are in the control room, which will lead to the bridge, One in the pipe room, also leads to the bridge. One in the tank room that leads back to the control room. The only way to get out of the reactors is through the bridge, where most of the escape routes go. Upon exiting the bridge, the workers will end up in the Reactor entrance train station.

Mako and Materia Production

After being pressurized in the tanks, the mako is now ready for use. The tanks put the mako in radioactive containers and is handled by a team of special scientists. The scientists carbon-freeze the Mako into a small ball called Materia. Depending on which part of the lifestream the Mako came from (Earth, Wind, Water, Fire, Holy, Light, Dark, Evil, Good) will determine the type of materia it will produce.
Since the Neo Midgar Mako reactors can now harvest new types of Mako, more materia was made since the incident with Meteor.
Emotional Manipulation- This Materia has been know for changing a person's emotions from angry to happy. Has been known for making a person very violent or overjoyed
Strength- A steroid-type Materia that increases a person's strength every time he or she uses it.
Magic- Of course, you know this is the type that allows a person to cast magic spells
Intelligence- This Materia increases the knowledge of a person, beyond the limits of what he or she already knows
These types of New Materia were only a small fraction of what new breakthroughs our scientists have discovered

How Mako has been used in Humans

Only the members of an elite fighting force known as SOLDIER have used the powers of Mako instead of Materia to use it's effects. Unlike, the temporary effects of Materia, Mako abilities are permanent and have been known to be used as a drug, thus an overdose can inflict you with a disease or transform you into a monster. Scientists inject Mako in humans through their veins. As the Mako flows through a human's body, he or she can feel it giving strength. There is no cure for a metamorphasis Mako disease. Once you metamorphisize, your entire body structure, cells, and DNA begin to change into a monster's. Your mind is trapped inside your new monster-body as you are forever changed.
