Climbing Your Hoosier Family Tree

Volume 1, Issue 1 January 2000

Welcome to the first issue of Climbing Your Hoosier Family Tree, an e-zine that will give you some new angles for researching your elusive Indiana ancestor, or just finding some different resources to give you more information on the relatives you already know about. Pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, get comfortable, and let's dig in. If you see something that needs clarification or corrections, please let me know about it. Likewise, if you've found a dynamite research source and want to share it, please send that along as well. That being said, let's find some ancestors!

Civil War Site of the Month
Did you know there were Hoosier soldiers on board The Sultana, a ship that sank in the Mississippi River? Greg Reeves has a site that not only focuses on his Sultana ancestor, but provides more Indiana Civil War links on the site...if you had a Hoosier ancestor in the Civil War, I'm confident you'll find info here to help fill in some gaps in your research. To dig a little deeper on the history of the Sultana, please click here.

Library of the Month
Are you tracking down some ancestors who lived in Hendricks County? Do the towns of Danville, Plainfield, or Amo sound familiar to you? Here's a library that might have just what you need to get you past your brick wall! The Plainfield Public Library at 1120 Stafford Road, Plainfield, IN 46168 has been very helpful to me in providing cemetery records, marriage records, obituaries...send them the name(s) you're interested in(plus a check to cover research time, photocopying and postage), and they'll dig up whatever can be found. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Planning a research trip to Indiana?
If that's the case, I'd like to make a suggestion for a place to visit to get a feel for what life was like in 1820's-1830's Indiana. A living museum, Conner Prairie is located at 13400 Allisonville Rd., Fishers IN...their website is http://www.connerprairie.org/ The website has admission hours and rates, plus details about special programs available. I strongly encourage you spending a morning or afternoon there if you're not familiar with Indiana...it will help put more personality into your dates and places. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

LOOK-UPS
Do you have access to census records? Do you go to the county courthouse on a regular basis? If you can provide free look-up assistance, please click on the mailbox below and let me know so I can pass the good news along in the next issue. If you can use a look-up from the Indiana 1820 or 1830 census indexes, please e-mail CHawk36650@aol.com and put LOOK-UP in the subject.

I want to go to the second edition please.
