March '99 Queries

1.My great grandmother was Mary E. Hoback born in 1853 in IN. Died in 1933 in Oklahoma City, OK. Unfortunately, I don't have anything on her parents, however she married John W. Hawkins March 12, 1871 in Benton Co. AR and they had 10 children. Judy Kremer

2.My Elizabeth Bartlett married Williams Hawkins. They were in Ohio Co, IN., during the 1860's. They had a son born 1868, Charles Hawkins. I have nothing else on Elizabeth or William. The one I did find, had wrong kids names. Charles siblings were: Ida, Walter, Jim or James, Laura. Walter Hawkins married Alice Pugh, ????? Laura married ________M__curry; Ida married a Thompson. My understanding is that William and Elizabeth moved to IL either with their kids or to follow their kids. Charles moved to Taylorville, Christian Co, IL., and spent out his life there. His obit says he lived there for 75 years and he died at age 92. All the other siblings also moved to IL., probably around the turn of the century.I have hit a brick wall with William and Elizabeth Bartlett Hawkins, any help appreciated. Thanks-Sally

3. I am just beginning my HAWKINS research. Have just learned that I descend from JOSEPH HAWKINS who made his will on March 23, 1803, in MADISON CO, KY, and died there some time in 1803. Have been told that this Joseph Hawkins married Susannah PETTY, daughter of John and Rebecca (Simms) Petty. Joseph and Susannah (Petty) Hawkins are said to be the parents of: 1. Martha (Patsy) Hawkins, born ca 1772-1773, married Richard Butcher on April 28, 1791, Madison Co, KY. The Butchers were in Cannon Co, TN around 1840. 2. Sarah Hawkins, born ca 1773-1774, married ____Pitts 3. SUSANNAH HAWKINS, born 1774-1776 in VIRGINIA, died 1850-1853 in Cannon Co, TN, married WILLIAM CAMPBELL in 1795 in KY (MY LINE.) Their first child, James Campbell born Jan 1796 in KY. 4. Ruben/Rueben Hawkins, born 1785 in Virginia. Lived with William and Susannah (Hawkins) Campbell at time of 1850 Cannon Co, TN census. 5. Joseph Hawkins, Jr. Are you researching this line? If so, please write Ann B. Chambless and maker her day!

4. My interest in the Hawkins line would probably be described by some as "grasping at straws." For nearly three years now I have been trying to find my ggggggrandparent, the parents of Elizabeth Boone (who married John Henry Defrance bef May, 1762) and her brother Hawkins Boone. Hawkins was a hero in the Rev. War, so I concentrated on finding him. Its just easier to research males back in those days. Well, about two months ago, with a lot of help from fellow Boone researchers, I found them. They are Abraham Boon(e) and Rebeckah Michall/Michell/Michael(s) of Talbot County, MD. Hawkins and Elizabeth were born there before July, 1750 when both are mentioned in the will of Rebeckah's brother, Shadrack. As Hawkins is quite unusual as a given name, even in those days, I suspect there may be an earlier marriage of a Hawkins female and Boone male who also named a son Hawkins Boone. If so, there might be a link to take this line back further. Capt. John Hawkins is of interest because I know his family was in Devon County (Devonshire), England at the same time (mid-to-late 1600s) and in fairly close proximity to Stoke Cannon where the family of George Boone II (who m. Sarah Mary Uppey) lived. They were the ggrandparents of Daniel Morgan Boone, the famous frontiersman. There are several distinctly different and long separated family oral traditions that tell us our Boones were related to Daniel's family which originally settled in Exeter Twp., PA. And there are documents strongly suggestive of interactions between various members of the PA and MD Boone families, as well as friends of both families. So, I'm "thrashing away" to see if I can find some connection between the Hawkins and the Boone surnames somewhere. I really don't have a Hawkins line, yet. If you have any insight to this puzzle, please write Larry.

5. My g-grandfather's sister was named Mrs. E.W. HAWKINS, and her last known place of residence was in Carnegie, OK, in 1936. I don't have any vital dates on her, or her exact name. The initials could be that of her husband, and I don't have his name either. Her brother's name was John W. NEWBERN b. AUG27,1876, d. JUN11,1936, OK. I found her name from cemetery records on John. Her maiden name was obviously NEWBERN. Their parent's names were Henry NEWBERN, and Frances MILLER NEWBERN.I would appreciate any help you could provide, as I have been stuck for so long. Please contact Lisa if you can shed some light on her mystery Hawkins.

6. I had read Gregory F. Hawkins had married Elizabeth Matson but have never found a source of this. Is it found in a church record in Maryland? My line is James Matson who came from Prince William Co.,VA to Bourbon Co.,KY in the 1780's. He was born in the 1740's with family tradition saying it was in MD. To date I have found nothing about him previous to 1773 when he purchased land in Pr. Wm. I have long wondered if there might not be a connection between James and Gregory Hawkins for this reason. An adv. appeared in the KY Gazette 8 May 1797 and reads: Gregory F. Hawkins has hops for sale. Apply to James Matson on east branch of Huston Creek abt. 5 mile from Bourbon. This reference was found in the book by Karen Mauer Green, The KY Gazette, 1787-1800 (1983, Gateway Press). James married Mary Peyton and, it seems, nearly all his transcations involved this family and their relatives. A family connection between Elizabeth Hawkins and James Matson would certainly be possible. Please write Jean Kay about these folks.
