It is a rare occasion when someone wakes up.  But this night, not only did someone wake up, but this person can also Tune!  The chase is on and someone will sleep before the chase is over.  Kiefer Sutherland's character is the only one who knows the truth, unfortunately, he is a part of the conspiracy!  Can he be trusted as he helps Rufus Sewell's character discover how to Tune at will or will Sutherland use Sewell for his own needs?  And who are the mysterious "Strangers" who are chasing Sewell?  Sometimes...our memories may not be ours.

I put this one right up there with THE NIGHT BREED.  An excellent story with some bizarre characters in a strange new world that is literally seperate from ours.   Kiefer is, by far, my favorite character in this film! Even better than O'Brien's "Mr. Hand".   Sewell was well cast in this film as the hero who has no idea what he can do or what is going on around him.  And then there is the visual direction of this film.  Just the cinematography alone  made me drool on the theatre floor.   I don't remember the last time I saw camer-work like I did in this film! 

However, there was a few things that irked me, but what annoyed me most was: If the Strangers can do anything by tuning, then why is it that when the city was being reconstructed and a building was moving towards one who was chasing Sewell who got his arm stuck on a railling -why couldn't the Stranger just tune himself a door in the oncoming building or even tune the rail so he could pull his arm free. But no, instead he stayed stuck until the oncoming building crushed him dead.  (You'll understand this better when you see it on video).   

I love this movie because it doesn't give us senseless T&A nor does it give us useless moments in the film.  Everything was essential and the cinematography alone was stunning! Just stunning.  I'm glad I got the t-shirt of the film from th elocal theatre as a ptize from it's DARK CITY online contest: "Richard O'brien   who stars in Dark City starred in what famous cult film of the 70's?"  I answered, I got a shirt. :-)  I also got one of th epromo pins from the movie as well.  It's really cool!

So GO SEE THIS FILM!!!!!!!!!! 

If you like artsy camera work and interesting stories, you'll love this movie. Or...if you just love Riff Raff from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW then you'll enjoy seeing the latest work from Richard O'Brien.
