Royal Coins
The scene above pictures the coronation of Louis IX in 1226. It is copied from the manuscript "Grandes Chronique de France", published in Paris in the 14th century. It appears courtesy of the Bibliotheque Nationale de France.
These coins were minted by the various Kings of France. During this period, the King was owed mostly nominal allegiance by the various other authoritites in the region that is now known as France. During some periods, the territory actually "ruled" by the King of France dwindled to less than 15-20% of what is now considered France. Often times other counts and dukes in the region had as much if not more power and authority than the King. Yet the tradition remained and only these men placed the word "REX" on their coinage and considered themselves King.
