Luperon Beach Resort

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

April 1997

In April, 1997 my cousin Jenny, my cousin Craig's wife Debbie and myself left Toronto Pearson International Airport for a week of sun at the Luperon Beach Resort. Below are some hi-lights and some pictures from our expedition. It is a beautiful hotel and we had an excellent time.

This is the first of 2 pools you will see before eventually ending up at the beach. It is a quieter pool with no swim up bar. You have to get up and walk over to the bar off to the side. We didn't spend anytime here, except in the early evening before heading to the show to have a quick drink at the bar.

This is the Animation Staff doing the Luperon Dance, its the Macarena with a few different steps in it. They did it at 3 p.m. afternoon and would try to get the guests to do it with them. I think all week I maybe saw 2 guests get up. We weren't one of them.

This is Rena, our bartender at the swim-up bar. She made the best drinks Jenny and Debbie said, I stuck mostly to beer or rum & ginger. Jenny and Debbie tried most of the drinks on her menu. It was here that about 2:30 p.m. every afternoon the Canadians and a few English would meet so as to hear the English language spoken. We figure that about 80% of the guests were German, so we just did a lot of smiling to most of the others.

This is Liz, Debbie, Jenny and I at the swim-up bar - Yes it was one of our favorite activities to partake in. Liz and her husband Rob are a couple we met from Barrie, Ontario and did a lot of things with. They are a wonderful couple, and Rob works at the Bell and Liz took a buyout from the company. We tried not to talk shop very much, and most of the time we were successful at it.

This is Rob, Me, Liz, Debbie and Jenny on our lounge chairs by the Animation pool. We thought we needed a picture of the 5 of us doing what we did best - sitting in the sun!

This is me doing my favorite thing - lying by the Animation pool soaking up the rays with a glass of cerveza at my side. However, one afternoon I did partake in the balloon toss. Jenny played volleyball one time and Aerobic man always tried to talk Debbie into going to Aerobics class. We did watch the other games, like water skiing across the pool - that was really neat and something you had to see to believe it could be done.

This is Steve, Jenny, Debbie, Myself, Liz and Rob the night we went to the Italian restaurant - mmmm the food was good. I didn't miss having bread in the main buffet restaurant this evening whatsoever. There are 3 a la carte restaurants - Italian, Mexican and Brazilian. Us 3 girls never made it to the Brazilian one as we didn't get up early enough to make reservations. But Liz made our reservations for us for the other 2. Liz and Rob went to the Brazilian restaurant and I guess they bring out a bunch of different kinds of meat there.

This is Debbie, Jenny, Myself, Steve, Rob and Liz at the Mexican Restaurant. On the walk over, I hitched a ride with the guy driving the riding lawn mower, so saved my energy. My supper this evening consisted of a shot of tequila and some wine - there wasn't even any bread. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it - I'm just not a big fan of Mexican food. Okay so I am the world's pickiest eater - give a gal a break.

The tequila gave me the energy to partake in the mixer games before the evening show. Rob and I acted as a couple and did this game were he blew up some balloons and I had to sit on them and break them. After that we were chosen to remain on stage to play a game similar to musical chairs. The difference being that you had to go to the audience and collect things the Animation team sent you for. Thanks to my English friends Howard, Mandy, Tom and Olivia I won the game and my prize was a bottle of rum.

Jenny, a German couple we met, myself and Hans at the bar by the stage area. I should mention that the Animation Staff put on amazing shows - Cats, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. The special effects and the costumes they had made you believe you were at a real show - needless to say not something I am used to at a resort in the Caribbean.

This is myself and Hans at the disco on our last night. Hans is an Austrian guy I hung around with, actually the 3 of us hung around with all 5 of the Austrian guys (they were single and cute - 3 were ski instructors!!!) In the evening and went to the disco with them most evenings.

Christian, Myself, Hans, Jenny and Frans at the disco. 3 of the 5 Austrian guys we hung around with. My picture of the 5 of them together didn't turn out - what a bummer! Hans is holding the bottle of rum I won in front of his face. And yes it was already opened - Gary opened it and the 8 of us passed it around and had a swig out of it.
