Cover Outs and Footwork Options
General -
To leave the Zone of Contact safely, a Kenpo stylist must use proper footwork and stances. The Hands must be continuously moving in an aggressive-defensive manner until the Kenpo practitioner is out of range.
The term Cover Out refers to this action. In all situations possible, the Cover Out contains a Front Cross Maneuver into a rear Twist Stance.
This maneuver into Twist Stance can be followed by a Step Through to an Neutral Bow Stance - this is a Single Cover Out. A Double Cover Out contains the same moves, with an additional Step Through Reverse into Neutral Bow Stance. Other similar Cover Outs utilize a Cat Stance, a Forward Lunge Stance or a Rear Bow Stance.
Listed below are some options written out for ease of reference. They are all based upon the right leg stepping in a Front Cross maneuver to a Rear Twist Stance. This will pinch off the groin and place major targets out of range while still enabling the practitioner to re-enter if needed. From Twist Stance…
Š The left foot lunges through and the right foot slides into Cat Stance
Š The left foot Steps Through to a right Neutral Bow - "Single Cover Out"
Š The left foot Steps Through to a right Neutral Bow, then the right foot Steps Through to a left Neutral Bow - "Double Cover Out"

Š Perform a Single Cover Out, then Step Drag Reverse to a right Cat Stance
Š Perform a Double Cover Out, then lean into a Rear Bow Stance
Š Perform a Double Cover Out, and substitute the Neutral bow with a Forward Lunge
Š Perform a Double Cover Out, then Step Drag Reverse to a right Cat Stance

Endings and Finishing Moves
General -
Using a proper Cover Out maneuver will get a Kenpo practitioner into the Zone of Safety. If additional strikes are combined with the Cover Out, this is referred to as an extension. An additional move that incapacitates the opponent is a Finishing Move.
A Simple Add-on move is one or two extra strikes in addition to the base technique. An Add-on is usually a convenient strike that is executed during the regular motion from the technique through the Cover Out. Examples include a Slice Kick to the knee as you step to a Front Cross (as in Beheading the Dragon), or shooting a Back Knuckle to the head as you settle into a Rear Twist Stance on the way out. Generally, no extra movement has to be added to the natural flow of motion.
An Extension move involves a little more action than an Add-on. Several moves, or part of another technique - or another entire technique might be added to the base technique. This is referred to as Borrowing and Combining. A move or sequence of moves is borrowed from one technique, and combined with the other base technique that is being used.
When Extensions are used expertly, with perfect timing and fluidity, it is referred to as a Blended Ending. There should be no wasted motion. Logical sequencing and flow of strikes within the natural movement of the techniques is expected. Full technique Blends are required for Black Belt, but practice of them should start early.
An Add-on, an Extension or a Blended Ending could each constitute a Finishing Move. A Finishing Move ensures the safety of the practitioner by making sure that the opponent is unable or unwilling to continue the attack. Generally, a true Finishing Move will include a Takedown and follow up.

Poses and Hand Positions on Cover Outs
General -
The stance and the positioning of the hands at the completion of a technique, determine the Pose. It is required to end up in as many different Poses on the Black Belt Test as possible. There are 25 techniques when you combine the Brown and Black Belt techniques. When you demonstrate them on both sides, this totals 50.
Below are 22 Hand positions and the stances that they work and look best from. Each hand position is numbered and/or named for ease of reference. Guard Position refers to the rear hand being at the sternum and the lead hand being out in front of the body in the proper position, as learned originally in the Neutral Bow Stance.

These three Hand Positions work well in Neutral Bow, Forward Lunge and Cat Stance
1. Double Fists in Guard Position
2. Rear Fist and Front Claw in Guard Position
3. Double Claws in Guard Position

The next Hand Position works well in Forward Bow and Cat Stance
4. Tiger Pose - Tight Orbit

The next Hand Position works well in Neutral bow and Rear Bow
5. Tiger Pose - Wide Orbit

The next Hand Position works well in Neutral Bow, Rear Bow and Cat Stance
6. Dragon Pose - Wide Orbit

The next Hand Positions work well in Neutral Bow, Forward Lunge and Cat Stance
7. Double Parker Hand
8. Rear Fist and Lead Parker Hand

Sparring (Freestyle Fighting)
Apply all of the principles, strategies, techniques and skills from the system.
Š Use Fakes and Feints from the system. Rolling Thunder - Fake Front Kick into a Roundhouse Kick, reverse it using a Roundhouse to a Front. Rear Chicken Kick - Fake a Spinning Kick and change it to a Lead Rear Heel Kick.
Š Use the Trapping skills from the system. Circling Serpent - Pin the lead hand and hit them. Trapped Lightning, Stopping the Storm, Hooking Thunder, Hooked Lightning, and Attacking Warrior - Grab, pull in and hit them
Š Use an alternating legs - Front Snap Kick, Roundhouse Kick Combination
Š Use the principle of the Quick Kick - Let the kicking foot drag the base foot in an exaggerated Step-Drag. Use it high and low, use it on a Lead Leg Rear Heel Kick
Š Use all the variations of the Rear Heel Kick, for it is our "big gun", our longest range tool and the most powerful technique in our arsenal. Use it to bridge the gap from non-fighting to fighting zones followed by an Over the Top Back Knuckle. This kick can be performed standing, with a foot adjustment, foot replacement, step across, spinning, jumping, jump-spinning, from rear leg with a pivot, and fading away.
Š Use the Hooking Heel Kick. Up to the groin, to the kidney or the spine, and the head. Thrust past the target and hook back or swing up to the target and then hook it. Often referred to a s simply the "Hook Kick". Works well off of a spin and a jump-spin.
Š Use the inverted Front Snap Kick to get around the "corner" of the opponent's lead leg.
Š Use the "Skating 3-Punch Combo" moving backward and forward. Punch left as you scoot with the right, punch right as you scoot with the left and punch left as you scoot with the right. Punch and scoot right, then left, then right again. Move from side to side and on all angles while punching.
Š Acquire athletic footwork - the best way to avoid getting hit is to not be there.
Š Utilize the Takedowns from the system during Sparring sessions.

Extension Requirements for Belt Levels

Markings in this Reference Guide
Prescribed endings are listed first after each technique. If there is an * at the end of the description, then it is required by the International Karate Connection Association for advancement. If there is no *, then that particular ending is required by K.I.C.K. Incorporated. Suggested endings are provided as additional ideas to the base moves.
