The Smashing Pumpkins Presentation Page
The Smashing Pumpkins Presentation Page

Hello friends and welcome to the Smashing Pumpkins Presentation page. The reason this page exists is to show The Smashing Pumpkins how much we care for them. This project has now been running for two months. The aim of this project is to present the band with a gift from us fans, a cheap gift that anyone can contribute to, something that is collectively individual too.

This page will tell you how to make a patch, and where to send it to and tell you a bit more about the project too.

This page was created by Chris Taylor and Richard Brown. Special thanks to to Tim Mcguire, who put this page up for us, and for everyone else who decides they want to show the Smashing Pumpkins how much they love them and their music.

We got the OK from Virgin Records and two lucky fans will be chosen to present our gift to the Pumpkins either before or after a show!

Jimmy is included in this project. We feel that after he gave 9 years of his life to the Pumpkins, it's not up to us to judge him. He was the man behind the drums, and people are encouraged to mention his name with love on their patches. Whether Jimmy will be there to accept our gift is another matter, but he is still included in this project. You don't have to include him on your patch if you don't want to!

A poll was set up on this page so that people could vote for their favourite idea and get more involved. The winning idea was to make a quilt out of individual patches, each one being made by a different fan and sewn around a large centre patch, also designed by a fan.

This idea met with massive support. Our previuos page had over 800 hits and there will be over 100 people making patches....

How To Make A Patch

.

1) BUY A PIECE OF FABRIC

Fabric is usually sold by the yard in the US, you will probably needa quarter yard to make both the front and back parts of your patch. You can use any all cotton fabrics: muslin, cotton broadcloth, calico or a quilting fabric. All of these are widely available at fabric stores and most craft stores.

Muslin is the cheapest, costing about 2or 3 dollars per yard, broadcloth and calico are between 4 or 5 dollars per yard and quilting fabrics can be mighty expensive (9 dollars per yard for some!) This means you should be spending anywhere from undera dollar, to 3 dollars, depending on which material you use.

MUSLIN is all cotton, and available in a grainy unbleached colour or in bleached white.

BROADCLOTH is a solid-coloured fabric, but make sure it is all cotton! - not all broadcloth is.

CALICO is print, usually flowered.

QUILTING FABRICS vary.

You may find some cute Halloween pumpkin prints somewhere - I suggest the 'Debbie Mumm' brand if you choose to go that route.

If you cannot find the colour you want, buy bleached muslin and rit dye, which can be purchased at most fabric stores and craft stores.

2) CUT THE MATERIAL

Cut 2 squares, you should leave about a centimeter each side, so each square should be about 16cm long on all 4 sides.

The finished patch should be about 15cm along all 4 sides, the extra 1cm border should be left blank.

3) SIGN THE BACK PATCH

Sign your name in BLACK sharpie pen or BLACK fabric paint on the right side of one square.(The 'right side' is the one you want facing out). This should not matter on muslin or broadcloth.

Now put this square aside.

NEW - You now may put a message, no more than 15 words, on the back of your patch along with your name.

4) DECORATE YOUR PATCH

You can do this in an6y number of ways with any fabric paints, pens, markers, etc. 'Jacquard' is a good paint-on fabric paint, 'Tulip' or 'Scribbles' are draw-on fabric paints. If you are wary about going directly onto the fabric, you can use a transfer pen ('Sulky' make transfer pens) but remember that everything will come out backward on your patch!

If you are so inclined, you can try applique or embroidery on your patch or you can simply sew other things to it, for example the Gish-like Christmas beads, but I would suggest that you not try these techniques unless you are experienced with them!

You are free to dedicate your patch in your own way, if you're not an artist then you could write a short poem or letter on your patch, if you're sticking things on your patch - make sure they wont come off. Please don't use anything too bulky, delicate or heavy.

5) PIN YOUR FRONT AND BACK PATCHES TOGETHER

6) MAIL YOUR PATCHES TO THE NEAREST COLLECTOR.

Find the nearest collector to you and mail your patch to them.

You MUST include 2 US stamps with your patch so that the kind collectors can mail them to the assembly point!

The people sewing your patches together will need to purchase a vast amount of thread, and eventually, alot of interfacing or stabilizer, which costs about 2 dollars per yard, so it would be nice to toss in a dollar or two (whatever currency you use).

The deadline will be December 1st, so get working on your patch soon!

Please e-mail your collector and tell them when you mail your patch to them.

*Please remember that the collectors are NOT expected to pay to forward your patches at their expense, any patches that arrive without stamps will not be included in the Quilt - sorry!*

Here Is Erin's centre patch, we will use it as the main focus of the quilt... Great, isn't it!

If you have any questions, comments, or want to be put on the list of participants, don't hesitate to e-mail us. To send us your comments and suggestions e-mail Richard Brown or Chris Taylor. If you want to be contacted further, please leave your e-mail address.

If you know someone who you know would be interested in making a patch then print out this page and give it them - not everyone has internet access!

This project is wonderful, there is alot of enthusiasm and enough people involved to make a very special quilt. No single patch is more important than any other, this whole project works on the principle of all of us working together, I know we can!

A big thank-you to the following people...

  • Tim McGuire - for putting our early pages up on his space and for his technical help.
  • Richard Brown - For coming up with the idea and doing a great job of making it work.
  • The Collectors - without them there would be no project!

Thanks again and later from Richard Brown and Chris Taylor.

Thanks to Antagonia of the magnolia shoals for writing the patch instructions.
