Alice Cooper : a legend

Alice Cooper, a.k.a Vincent Furnier, started his career in the 1960's, and he's still very much alive today. I could see it for myself when I went to see him perform in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on December 30, 1997. Pure joy!

That show was a part of the "New Year's Rotten Eve Tour 1997" which only consisted of 3 concerts. I was then more than happy to go there, with my friend Ron, 2 days before going back to Salt Lake City for the following quarter. We were vacationing in Toledo, Ohio.

We were very lucky, and found some space in the front row. The opening act was a local band, of which I forgot the name. I was thinking : "I'm gonna see Alice Cooper for real and up close!"

At last. Some clowns climb on stage along with a circus music, very appropriate. And all of a sudden...

...In a cloud of smoke, the first notes of "Hello Hooray" sound as the band appears. Then, Alice pops out of a giant jack-in-the-box, welcomed by a roar from the audience. Of course, I'm completely stunned, I can see him at last.

the setlist (not in order)was :

Hello Hooray, Sideshow, No More Mr Nice Guy, Lost in America, Billion Dollar Babies, Public Animal #9, Be my Lover, Nothing's Free, From the Inside, 18, Halo of Flies, Poison, Only Women Bleed, Cleansed by Fire, Unfinished Sweet, Cold Ethyl, School's Out, and Under my Wheels for the encore.

The theatrics were there, although there weren't big special effects, since the show was in a club (1000 people).

From the front row, I had the chance of exchanging a few looks with the Master, and I caught one of his "Dollars" during "Billion Dollar Babies". I framed it and keep it as a souvenir.

One of the guitarists was Reb Beach, who was excellent.
