A single female coelacanth carrying 26 fully formed near-term pups was caught in a trawl net near Pebane in central Mozambique in August 1991. The Mozambique coelacanth is the first off Mozambique and with the 1938 Chalumna specimen, only the second to be recorded from the shore of the African mainland and also the second to be caught In a trawl net. The coelacanth, which measured 179 cm in length and 98 kg in weight, is one of the largest coelacanths known, exceeded only by the 180 cm, 95 kg specimen caught off Grand Comoro in 1960. The Mozambique specimen confirms the trend that all specimens greater than 165 cm are females. |
