Christian Art

Throughout the history of Christianity, many people have made efforts to praise their God through art. Since the practice of this type of praise began, the art that has been produced has changed as well. The Christian Church is bound by its title deed, the Bible, as a patron and a promoter of the arts. "The God of the creation story in Genesis I is an artist who 'saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good'" (Newton 21). The church thus committed to the belief that God created the world using the beauty that was in himself, therefore needing to express it. The sense of the beauty of the human body is deeply rooted in the Scriptures, for example, the disciples, prophets, or Jesus himself.

The 3 areas of Christian art that we have deemed to be essential to the history of the practice are scenes involving Madonna and her child, the Crucifixion, and a series of works named "Pietà." These three events were chosen because they are important milestones in the life of Christ. The first depicts the time in which Jesus was an infant in his mother's arms. The second refers to his death on the cross, and the third represents a mother's mourning for the death of her child.
