Haggai is a contemporary with Zechariah, and so the two should be studied together. Haggai is also very contemporary for us in this present generation. The reason why is because Israel is back! They have returned a second time to the Holy Land. Haggai wrote at the first return, and now his message is as applicable to this second return.

There is a primary reason why God allowed Israel to return the first time, and that reason remains the same at this second return. It is the rebuilding of God's house. Everything in God's full plan for Israel centers in the promised land (Eritz), the city of Jerusalem, and most specifically the Temple. It is all about the blood - blood sacrifice - lawful honoring of the blood! The Temple Mount has become very contemporary to our generation. It is in the news almost daily. The issue of sovereignty is costing lives as the Mount becomes more contemporary with each passing day. It is clear the fate of nations will be determined when God claims His sovereignty over the Temple Mount. Another Zerubbabel and Joshua are in the wings as God prepares events that will lead to their declaration on His behalf. I believe the Two Witnesses of Revelation chapter 11 will witness to the fact that God has started the next dispensation. I'm convinced the rapture of the Church is near, and when the true Church steps aside at the rapture God will turn to Israel. The contemporary Zerubbabel and Joshua will be the foundation of the next dispensation. The first saved, the first fruits of a new era (all the saved will be gone after the rapture). They will be supported by 144,000 specially called out Jews from Israel. Together they will stand against Secular Judaism, Apostate Christianity, and the Gentile Nations. They will have a mission. That mission I believe will be to build and establish kosher worship in Ezekiel's Temple (Ezekiel 40 - 48). They will have 3 1/2 years (the first half of the 7 year Tribulation) to accomplish their mission.

This is why Haggai must move into the area of contemporary theology for this, our generation. He is as relevant to this second return as he was to the first. Haggai speaking on God's behalf told his generation "I will fill this house with glory, " and "the glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former." It was the presents of the Lord Jesus Christ in the Second Temple that fulfilled these words. The Shikinah Glory (the cloud) of the First Temple never was manifested in the Second, but the physical body of Christ, the greater glory, graced the Second Temple. A Third Temple will experience the glorified physical body of Christ as both the Shikinah and the physical body are manifested together as happened at the transformation.

2 Chron 5:6
6 Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
KJV

2 Chron 5:13-14
13 It came even to pass, as the trumpeters and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in praising and thanking the LORD; and when they lifted up their voice with the trumpets and cymbals and instruments of musick, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: that then the house was filled with a cloud, even the house of the LORD;

14 So that the priests could not stand to minister by reason of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of God.
KJV

The Second Temple had the even greater glory in the physical presents of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is coming again! This time to the Third Jewish Temple where His glory will be manifested as He was at the transfiguration.

Matt 17:2
2 And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.
KJV

Ezek 43:2-5
2 And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory.

3 And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.

4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east.

5 So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house.
KJV

Haggai is contemporary because he speaks to this greater glory that came to the Second Temple as also coming to Ezekiel's Temple, the Third Jewish Temple to be built on the same Temple Mount. The "wrath of the lamb" will be awesome when He comes in all His glory.
