DON OBERG STATION AGENT MCI Hi Mike and Rose (Dragen), I'm sending you this e-mail to let you know that Don Oberg, OB from KC died on tuesday Jan 6. I read about it in the St Joe paper and didn't know if it was Don or not. So I just called Fast Eddie. He wasn't home, but I talked with his wife, and she told me it was true. I don't know much on details, except OB wife found him. Fast Eddie's wife said he has not been sick or as far as they knew he was in good health. It is sad for the fact that he has 3 kids. By the paper, services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Baily & Cox Funeral home in Plattsburg Mo. Family visitation is one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. I'll talk with you guys again. Rose Dragen would know more about his time there. -Paul (1/10/04) Hello Rose and Eddie, Paul Farris emailed me about Don. I want to post something at the online FL Club and in the newsletter. When did he work in MKC/MCI? Other stations? What had he been doing since '86? Rose, who was the Pat that sent you the email Paul forwarded to me? Thanks for your help, -Jake (1/10/04) Here is the wording from the information provided at the Funeral today, which was by the way so full people were standing in the hallway. Born 7/27/1947 Salina, KS. only child of Estrell Q. Oberg and Wilma McCluggage Oberg. He grew up in Cherryvale, KS,and graduated from Cherryvale High School in 1964. He left southeast Kansas for Kansas City,MO while working for Frontier Airlines in the mid-70's. (From the eulogy given by former roommate and former FAL employee Phillip Montgomery, he started in MKC in 1968) Don worked for W.W. Grainger from 1983 until 1999, leaving to take care of his mother and pursue other ventures. Married April 17, 1982 to Tracy L. Perry of Liberty, MO. Children Joseph born in 1986, Leslie born in 1988 and Nathan born in 1991. Don was co-founder with about 14 other enthusiasts of the Great American Croquet Association. He loved canoeing and fishing. He was a member of the Missouri Militia, 1st Battalion, 3rd Brigade. A favorite quote of Don's by unknown author "Those who trade liberty for security deserve neither." From information gathered after the funeral, Don was on experimental drugs for his arthritis, that may have contributed to a heart attack. No autopsy was performed. Don was the stay at home parent, while his wife worked for ADT Security Systems. Pat, who sent the email regarding Don, was Pat Wildberger, who lives in St. Joseph, and worked MKC/MCI to the end. Thank you, -Rose (1/10/04) Thank you for the info, Rose. The quote, "Those who trade liberty for security deserve neither", is one of my favorites too and was spoken by Ben Franklin. -Jake (1/10/04) Hi Paul...that was Pat Wildberger, from St. Joe. Mike and I went to the services..there were old FL folks there that I hadn't seen in some time. Bobbie Matlock, Clay Riecker and Art Lewis, Eddie Mondt who I see often, then Jeff Nichols, Davey Jones (TX) and Phillip Montgomery ...all 3 who worked at downtown airport....and had stayed close to Don. It was a nice service, standing room only. His kids are 13-17, very tough. Don had rheumatoid arthritis and the drugs he took to be able to keep active, probably affected his heart. His family could not afford an autopsy, and he was buried in a simple pine box. His wife works, but other than Don's disability is the breadwinner. Another reminder to be thankful for what we have, and the health we enjoy! Mike and Rose -Fwd Paul (1/10/04) Those of you who'd been thru the old airport in Kansas City would remember Don or Obie as he was called. He was a great guy, a lot of fun. He worked operations with a guy named Mickey Mitchell. I will never forget working Christmas week one year and we got back late at night on a turn around to Denver on the 580. We were taxing up to the gate when the pilots dinged me to come up to the cockpit. up I went and low and behold there was Santa Claus in the middle of a bad snowstrom , a flashlight in each hand, directing the 580 into its parking spot. We were laughing so hard we could hardly get our breath. We deplaned the people and Santa waved a flashlight wishing everyone a merry christmas. Santa was snockered out of his gord but had elected on his night off and I think it was Christmas eve to come down and give his Frontier family a little kick, at least the ones that couldn't be with theirs. Obie was one of the good ones!! I'm sorry to hear he's gone. -Barb Womack, KC flight attendant (1/12/04) I got your note to Rose about History on Don "Obey" Oberg. I'll get as much to you as I can this week, I need to check on something. I think He was Hired in PPF and transfered to MCI, after a couple of Days or Weeks, I met him at K.C. after 3-21-68. I'll get back to you, been a rough week- He was My Best man at My Wedding. He only has 2 step-brothers, no other family on his side and his Widow is an only Child Family. He leaves 3 wonderful children, 2 in High School and 1 in 6th grade. I'll send more later-gotta go to work now. -Eddie Mondt (1/15/04) Just put in the mail to you an obituary for Obey. Got to see some old FL folks last week and talk to several more via phone calls. I just don't seem to have enough free time to chat online etc. Obey and several of the K.C. agents and mechanics would always go to the FL Golf Tourney in Tus in January. Always had a wonderful time out there with the FL family. Several of the Boys from FSM and FYV would always join in on the fun-- those were the days! -Eddie (1/18/04)
