Thanks for your concern. -Bill Blackmon (3/10/00) Thanks for the notice on Owen. I carry some fond memories of this fine gentleman. I am sorry to learn of his lining up on runway two seven for his final flight west. -Billy Walker (3/10/00) A great man and a great pilot. I flew with him after only 1 month with Central (3 day trip), and a month later he asked me to come into the training department with Bill Huffman, where we wrote the CV-600 manual. Owen and I went to DEN to fly the 727 after FAL bought us. Until his retirement in '76 we hunted deer and elk, fished, flew and played golf together. I will miss him deeply. More and more of our people are headed west. I hope he and Mark Burke are having a glass of heavenly scotch together. -Clyde Hart (3/10/00) I mentioned in my posting how close Owen and I were until his retirement in '76. He was a dear friend. It seems as though we're losing more and more as each month goes by...... but I guess that's to be expected at the ages we're achieving. I lost some who were 35 and some, like Owen, who were 83. -Clyde Hart (3/10/00) One of the first things that comes to my mind about Owen is the time we took off out of Love Field on the B737 going to Las Vegas and got into that horrible hail storm right out of Dallas. It took a little while (seemed like forever) to get clearance out of it. I was on the front jump seat and Sharon Seay and Marianne Durden were on the back. The turbulence was enough to cause the back seat to actually fold up with the girls sitting on it while fastened in, they were literally hanging from the harnesses. The sound over my head was like a freight train. Many of you remember Owen's windshield was shattered, there was no paint left on the nose, the leading edge of the wings was all beat up, and there were baseball size holes in the cowling. When we got back on the ground, many airport employees were lined up to gawk at the damage to the plane. I asked Owen how he was doing, and he said he'd be okay as soon as he got a change of underwear! Of course, many will remember Owen's teasing me when Lloyd Leach complained to him and wanted to have me fired when I teased Lloyd about a rough landing. I dearly loved the man and we will all miss him. -Karen Fox (3/10/00) OBITUARY OWEN COOK Owen H. Cook Jr. FORT WORTH -- Owen H. Greenwood Funeral Home 3100 White Settlement Road, 336-0584 -Ft. Worth Star Telegram (3/10/00) My remembrances of Owen was by introduction by my Uncle, Lloyd Leach. Owen was a quite man, slow to anger and letting one know they were someone. His 15 minutes of fame was when he was at the controls of SN939 (I think) when filming the one engine landing at Carswell in "Strategic Air Command". I will miss him! -Jon Sluder, BVO-PNC-FSM-ACF-GSW-DAL and finally DFW! (3/11/00) You did your usual outstanding work and talent on Owen Cooks Obit, and I have printed it off and am going to take it to the Funeral today, and present it to Virginia Cook (Wife) and his son Owen Cook III . Thanks for your efforts. -Bill Blackmon (3/11/00) Thanks Bill. Pass on my condolences and if there's anything else the family wants posted at Owen's webpage, just send it to me. -Jake Lamkins (3/11/00) This is a sad part of life. Losing friends is hard on all concerned but hardest of all on their families. I was basically forced to move to Denver when they began closing the Phoenix base. I got there just about the same time that the Central merge came about and that brought me into contact with the Central pilots who were also forced into Denver. Owen Cook was one of them. We went through Boeing 727 school together. Both of us were commuting at that particular time and we shared a hotel room together while in school. We shared some common hobbies and I got to know Owen pretty well then. He was a great person and the world has lost something with his passing. I will miss him. -EP Lietz (3/11/00) I printed off the entire Owen Cook obit, and presented it to his family yesterday at the funeral. They were very thrilled to have it, and Owen Cook III is on line, and said that he would pull it up, and see if he might contribute something. Your efforts are very much appreciated. Thanks again. -Bill Blackmon (3/12/00) Owen and my uncle (Lloyd Leach) were very instrumental in my career with Central and Frontier. How many employees recall that Owen was the Captain at the controls of SN939, making the one engine landing at Carwell AFB for the movie "Strategic Air Command"? I will miss them BOTH! Lloyd died in November of'92. May you both be at peace. -Jon Sluder, Alumni 1953-1986.....
