Dare Inquire Representatives Truth

Is U.S. a Republic or a (representative)(indirect) Democracy?

In 1788 a group of real statesmen of great physical vigor, mental acumen, through knowledge, practical wisdom, far-sighted vision and moral courage assembled in Philadelphia and after months of discussion and deliberation produced the Constitution which provided for the republic of the United States."

This simple statement from Harry F. Atwood's 1918 book

BACK TO THE REPUBLIC THE GOLDEN MEAN: THE STANDARD FORM OF GOVERNMENT,

should have settled the question of whether the United States is a Republic or a Democracy for students, scholars, history buffs, Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, editors, AND LAWYERS AND ATTORNEYS.

It hasn't.

Fay-West voter turnout sinks even lower

How low can they go?

We’re referring to the turnout for an election. Tuesday’s voter turnout figures dipped to ridiculously low results: Voter turnout was at 23 percent in Westmoreland and 19.7 percent in Fayette.

Why did voters find staying home to be the national pastime during the twice-a-year elections?

Surely the weather played a small part. Rain, hail and the threat of snow put a damp cast over the day. But rain in the spring and fall is nothing new. On Election Day 1985, the area experienced one of the worst storms in years and more people came out to vote.

However, the ballot did offer the voters very few choices. Most races were uncontested. A U.S. Senate race and an attorney general race on the Democratic side provided the sole suspense for voters.

This appears to be a recurring theme in elections here. Why is it that we are vastly becoming a democracy of the minority and a democracy of incumbency?

This is not a slap against the incumbents.

But competition on the ballot brings a healthy discussion of the issues to the table.

This is what is needed to ensure that democracy as designed by our forefathers is carried out.

Harry F. Atwood tells us why it is so important to refute the distortion of the fact that the United States is a republic, not a democracy.

The provision of the U.S. Constitution that the United States is a Republic needs to be understood by all citizens in order to preserve the founding principles which enable the United States of America to actually be the only existing true Republic in the world.

We are not a democracy. The rule of the majority is not the rule of law.

That fact is what separates our form of government from many others around the world.
