Life is in a constant state of change. Some of us would like to rewrite that statement as, "Life is constant." However, this is not the case---life has never been, and will never be, constant.
Take, for example, a young man who I knew a few years ago, named Roger. Roger was a brilliant man, an English and drama teacher at a community college I attended, an actor who at one time had been asked to play a summer role on General Hospital. He seemed to have it all going for him--a wife who loved him dearly, a job he loved doing, a promising career. Yet one day, all of that came to a grinding, nearly crushing halt: his wife had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the memory-sapping disease for which, sadly, there is no cure.
When I heard him tell his story to those of us who were in his class, I couldn't help but think about how wonderful it would be to have one thing---just one bit of life--that I could count on, no matter what. God is that one Person, friend. "Heaven and Earth shall pass away, but My words shall never pass away,", Jesus told us (Matthew 24:35). "The grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand forever,", wrote the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 40:8).
So what is the most important promise God has made to us? It is what I call my life verse, what former pastor Gordon Mitchell (formerly of College Hills Baptist Church in San Angelo, TX) called the greatest summary statement of the Bible. It's found in John 3 verse 16. "For GOD so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Isn't that a wonderful promise? It can be yours to hold onto, as well. Wouldn't it be great to know that whatever happens tomorrow (or, for that matter, later tonight),you can have someone who loves you enough to give you everlasting life?
