Why I Am A Christian

Reason #3: Because Life is Confusing but God Gives Direction

In Reason #2, we discovered that life is in a constant state of change. This is certainly true, and another certain truth goes along with it: change brings confusion. Don't believe me? Then I suggest you look at your life, for example, 10 years ago, and look at how much it's changed since then. If you are like the vast majority of people, your life has changed immensely---and some of those changes might not have been planned.

It is certain, then, that everyone needs some sense of direction for their lives. Everyone wants to make their world a better place to live in, either for themselves, or for others. But how can we make our lives better, without any knowledge of what "better" is?

There are some who would answer that question with "Well, you just follow your heart," but that does not satisfy: one can set his or her heart on earning, for example, a great big bank account, and with it buy lots of land, a BIG house, cars, etc., and wind up one day saying, as King Solomon said, "Vanity of vanities! All is vanity"(Ecclesiastes 1:2). Some would answer the above question with "Well, just follow your dreams: decide what you want to do, and go for it." Again, that does not satisfy, and for the same reason.

To prove this, look at the news, just over the last year. How many of those who were rich and famous are now dead? Many who reach that level of wealth got there because they thought earning that much money would make their lives better inside: yet when they got there, they found themselves just as empty and miserable as before. Don't think that it only happens to the rich and famous either: drug abuse, lawlessness, and other forms of evil run rampant in our streets today.

That is not to say, however, that mankind hasn't tried to cure the problem of unhappiness with life. You can go into almost any bookstore, and find a thousand self-help books, on subjects such as astrology, spiritism, and even improving your sex life. All are merely band-aids: they don't cure the real problem---SIN. Separation from God because of sinful acts you've done.

Sin is not, however, an insurmountable problem. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me", wrote the Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians (4:13). That means that in Jesus Christ, any man or woman can overcome their sin, and lead a fulfilled life. "Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light,", Jesus said (Matthew 11:28-30). He used the analogy of the yoke, a device used to tie a team of oxen to a plow (for example). 'My yoke is easy", He says. He is saying that His yoke fits you, that it comes in your size, and that it won't put an inordinate amount of pain on you that you can't bear. He uses the yoke to give you direction. Follow His lead, and one experiences the greatest joy. And all you need do is get into the yoke and follow Him!

Oh, and by the way, what turned out with our dear friend King Solomon, who found out that all the riches of life were utterly futile? Ecclesiastes 12:13 say it all: "Let us hear the conclusion of the matter: Fear GOD, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."

If I can be of any help to you at all in putting on Christ's yoke, or in bearing your burden, please let me know.
