Cat On Keyboard

Software Can Detect A Cat On Keyboard

"The latest economic tumult shivers the spines of Internet moneybags and Silicon Valley kingpins, but ordinary American computer users have a lesser worry:

"How do I get my cat off the keyboard?"

Now a solution has arrived - a software program that "knows" when a cat is walking on the keyboard

The software, dubbed PawSense, automatically ignores anything the cat types. The software also instructs the computer to emit scary, cat-repelling sounds - for example, the sound of a harmonica.

"I find that for cats, the most annoying sound is the harmonica", explains software programmer Chris Niswander, who runs the software company.

To date, no large computer networks are known to have crashed because a cat traipsed across someone's keyboard. Yet kitty-triggered crashes are no joke to the individual who tries to maintain a cat and a computer under the same roof. For these people, there is no outrage like returning from the coffee pot to discover Fluffy is snoozing atop the keyboard - one big bundle of fur, sprawled from
QWERT to ENTER - and that the computer screen has turned dark!

How does PawSense know a cat is crossing a keyboard?

Simple: Cats don't know what they're typing, so their little paws tend to fall on several keys at once. So Niswander programmed the software to recognize when several keys are being struck simultaneously. How many keys can a cat strike at one? To find out, Niswander used a ruler to measure the paw sizes of several neighborhood cats. When a cat walks across the keyboard, the computer displays a slightly tongue-in-cheek warning:

"Catlike Typing Detected"

Niswander officially has no cats, "I'm between cats. There is a neighborhood cat who's trying to persuade me that she lives with me, although I claim she doesn't."

Check out this site by clicking on to PawSense here - it's worth the chuckle you'll get when you hear that one of the "scary sounds" they use is called "Hissy Fit"...us cat people truly know that the ONLY sound that will make our furry little friends move is the sound of the
CAN OPENER!!!
