"The Gates, Central Park, New York City, 1979-2005"
Christo, the artist who, with lots of help, created "Running Fence" in California, erects "The Gates" in New York's Central Park. Saffron-colored skirt panels flow above 23 miles of footpaths.
Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude, have lived in New York for 41 years. It's taken them 26 years to complete the project, which is beholden to no corporate sponsors or grant programs. About 600 people, New York locals and visitors, signed on to help.
The project was built with 5,290 tons of steel, 60 miles of vinyl tubing and more than 1 million square feet of fabric -- all to be recycled when the piece is dismantled. The 7,532 gates of temporary art, to be shared and enjoyed on a large scale, will close on February 27, 2005.
