Arrive on time and be in your seat before the tardy bell rings.
If you must use the bathroom or get a drink of water, please do so between classes. If you ask to use the bathroom after the tardy bell, you may not be allowed to go immediately.
Food and beverages (except water) will not be consumed in the classroom and must be kept in students’ lockers or thrown away upon entering the classroom.
If homework was assigned the previous day, students will take it out and be prepared to go over it when the tardy bell rings.
Admits and make-up work should be shown to me before class begins. Look up missed assignments on the assignment calendar.
If there is a bell ringer activity, students should begin to work on it when the tardy bell rings, if not before.
2. During Class
Any time class is being led by the teacher (such as correcting the assignment, reviewing, presenting new material, or doing activities) students will be focused and attentive.
Every effort will be made to speak Spanish whenever possible. Students will answer in Spanish when the teacher asks a question in Spanish.
A student may use the pass option (Páseme) when called on, in which case another student will be called on. The student who passed should then be prepared to answer the question to check for understanding. Students may not pass indefinitely.
To answer questions, wait to be called on or for me to ask for “voluntarios.”
3. End of Class
If there is an assignment, time will be given at the end of the hour to do an example problem from each exercise together.
Students will spend the remaining time working on the assignment independently or with one partner, raising their hand if they have a question.
If a student finishes the assignment before the end of the hour, he or she may read a book or magazine, or work on an assignment for another class.
Students may put their things away to get ready to leave one minute before the end of class.
Students will remain in their seats until they are dismissed (Adiós, Hasta mañana).
4. Materials
Students will bring their textbook, workbook, a notebook, and a pencil or pen (blue or black for quizzes, tests, and assignments to be turned in) with them every day.
A folder or three-ring binder is useful to store the various worksheets you will receive.
5. Absences
If you know in advance that you are going to miss Spanish class you need to get the assignment before your absence. You may check my web site at http://david_finley.tripod.com or http://members.tripod.com/~David_Finley/index.html under “Assignments” or look up the day you’ll be gone on the assignment calendar.
Assignments for absences known about ahead of time (pre-admits and school-sponsored activities) are due before or immediately following the absence. If the assignment is a quiz or a test you will be expected to take it before you leave or the day you return.
If you will be leaving class early either with a blue pass or for a school sponsored event, you should tell me at the beginning of class.
Assignments for unforeseen excused absences must be completed in the number of days missed plus one. It is your responsibility to show me your make-up work.
If the absence is unexcused, the student will be given a zero on assignments collected or tests given during the absence.
An admit must be shown if the previous class was missed. You will need to get an admit from the office if you don’t have one, and you will be assigned a seminar for the amount of class time missed while obtaining the admit
6. Consequences
Failure to follow procedures properly may result in a reteaching seminar being assigned. During a seminar the student will be retrained in proper procedure.
An appointment for a seminar will be made for after school the day it is assigned or the following morning at 8:00. Seminars will last as long as needed to properly retrain.
Failure to appear at your seminar will be reported to administration.
Depending on the severity of the rule infraction, students may receive a warning, a seminar, or be removed from class.
7. Homework Checks
We will have homework checks on almost every assignment. You will receive 2 points for fully completing each exercise of the assignment, and 0 points for not having the exercise done. Assignments not checked will be handed in to be checked for accuracy. I will tell you when the homework is assigned if it will be handed in and how many points it will be worth.
8. Extra Credit
Throughout the year there will be several opportunities to earn extra credit points. These include las noticias, or “the news”, answering the question on my web page guest book in Spanish, and special projects.
9. At All Times
Follow the teacher's directions the first time.
Keep body parts and all possessions to yourself and keep them quiet
Only the teacher or the designated speaker should be talking. Everyone else should be listening.
