Stress in Your Life? Massage Has Many Benefits

Massage is one of the earliest practices of humankind. It is said to be the most natural and instinctive means of relieving pain and discomfort. When a person has sore, aching muscles, abdominal pains, or a bruise or wound, it is a natural and instinctive impulse to touch and rub that part of the body to obtain relief.

Physically, massage increases metabolism, hastens healing, relaxes and refreshes the muscles, and improves the detoxifying functions of the lymphatic system. Massage helps to prevent muscle cramps and spasms, assists the digestive process and assimilation of nutrients, and improves circulation of blood to all body systems. Since blood carries nutrients to the skin, massage is beneficial in keeping the skin functioning in a normal, healthy manner.

Psychologically, massage relieves fatigue, reduces tension, calms the nervous system, and promotes a sense of relaxation and renewed energy.

In Texas, Massage Therapists are required by law to pass a 300 hour curriculum including 50 hours of supervised practice, and pass a state examination. Registration is renewed annually, and only Registered Massage Therapists are legally allowed to practice Massage Therapy. Complaints of unethical or illegal behavior can be directed to the Texas Department of Health.

Before beginning a Swedish Massage, which is characterized by long, relaxing strokes, the therapist will fill out a client information sheet asking you questions about your health and medical history that are pertinent to the practise of Massage Therapy. After the interview the therapist will explain the process to you in more detail and answer any questions you may have. During the actual massage, your body will be covered with sheets and/or towels except for the area being worked on. Using a light massage oil that is nourishing for your skin, the therapist will massage your back, neck, shoulders, and the back of your legs. You will then turn over for the front of your legs, sides, abdomen, arms, hands and neck, finishing with a scalp massage and light facial with no oil. You can listen to music, talk to the therapist, or just relax and drift off into sleep.

After a massage and over the next day or two, you need to drink several glasses of water to flush out the lymph fluids and toxins that may have been released. You may experience an increase in energy, improved bowel functions, or just a general sense of well-being. Areas that were more deeply worked on may be tender for a day or two, but stretching will help relieve this and continue to flush out the deposits and toxins remaining there.
