Driver: Steering problem caused car to strike man BY MARCUS BLAIR TIMES RECORD The car that struck and killed a Van Buren man Wednesday as he left a Fort Smith restaurant may have been in need of repair, according to police reports. The 33-year-old disabled driver, also of Van Buren, posted a $15,000 bond and was released from jail. Deputy Prosecutor Wendy Johnson said the investigation is continuing. She said authorities had requested a mechanic inspect the car, causing a delay in possible charges being filed. Victor Boyd David, 64, of Van Buren had just finished a meal at the Oriental Palace restaurant at 3758 Midland Blvd. in Fort Smith and was walking to his car when the suspect's vehicle jumped the curb and struck him. David was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was still sitting in his car when officers arrived. A police report states when officers asked the suspect if he was OK, he replied through his tears, "I don't think so. I just killed that man." The report states the vehicle had begun to pull to the right as the suspect approached the restaurant. He tried to steer the car left to no avail. The suspect, who is disabled with kidney problems, had been having problems with the front end of the vehicle for some time, the report states. He purchased the vehicle last summer for transportation to the pharmacy and to see his doctor in Little Rock. The man lives on a fixed income and could not afford to have the car repaired, the police report states. A Breathalizer test showed he had no alcohol in his blood. He also was administered a drug test, but the results were not available Thursday. -Jake Lamkins (2/1/99) VICTOR DAVID Born 17 Dec 1934 Died 30 Dec 1998 Age 64 At 72956 (Van Buren, Crawford, AR) SSN issued in Louisiana -SSDI (3/3/99) The photos of Vic were found at Warren McLellan's website. -Jake (1/22/04) Just want you to know the little girl in the photo of Sonje, Sue andJoy is my dranddaughter.
