EXTRACTIONS
Introduction:
Extractions incorporate the
removal of a tooth ( which cannot be saved by any means ) from the mouth
of the patient. Usually a tooth is extracted if:
-
the tooth is badly decayed
-
the bone support of the tooth has eroded, making it mobile
-
for orthodontic purposes
The area surrounding the tooth is anaesthetized using local anaesthetics,
and once the local anaesthetic has achieved its full effect ( within 5
minutes ), the extraction of the tooth is commenced, so that the patient
does not feel anything when the tooth is pulled out using a forceps.
The entire procedure is
totally painless and the patient can return to his/her normal work schedule
within 30 minutes after the extraction.
The following instructions should be followed by the patient who has
undergone extraction:
-
clench the cotton pack placed by the dentist over the extration socket
for 1 hour
-
remove cotton pack after 1 hour and take some cold drinks or ice-cream
-
no spitting of blood/saliva permitted
-
cold, soft, liquid diet for the 1st 24 hours
-
no hot and hard foods for the 1st 24 hours
-
abstain from smoking, tobacco-chewing till the extraction socket has healed
