AMERICAN WAR PRODUCTIVITY

SUPPLYING AND HELPING THE ALLIED TROOPS

During World War II there was high demand for war time products such as guns and heavy artillery. Businesses converted their commercial status in producing to make weapons for American troops, and they also got paid. Everybody pitched in to get the guns to the wars. But, who was paying for these guns? The American Government was. This put a damper on the national debt which was already $49,000,000,000.00 before we entered the war.

In 1940 congress saw what was happening and decided to build up the Navy in case of an invasion attempt. They passed an act that issued $18,000,000,000 to the United States Navy. This money was used to produce a large, strong fleet of 1,200,000 ships.

Weapons were not only created for American troops, but for all the allies as well. Before the U.S. entered the war the Lend Lease Act was passed, this gave the them the power to supply other countries with weapons. The United States spent $341,491,000,000 during World War II and $48,000,000,000 went to the Lend Lease Act. Wars in the USSR accounted for $192,000,000,000 of US money. Cost of other wars: Great Britain $120,000,000,000 , Germany $272,000,000,000 , Italy $94,000,000,000 , and Japan $56,000,000,000. It is said that the total cost off everything for every country totaled over one trillion dollars.
