Act 1 Scene 1
The date is September 3rd, 1951. Night. The place is a small but upscale restaurant and bar in Kiev, USSR. The restaurant is worn with an upstairs dining room and a downstairs bar. The curtain rises to the lower bar section. It is poorly lit by overhead lights and is engulfed in a film of smoke. Though it is late, a number of people still mill around in this downstairs bar. Visible are a genuine Russian bartender behind his bar, and two men sitting at a round table. A third, shorter man (Yuri Kuscov), smoking semi-nervously joins them at their table.
*A note: All dialogue is assumed to be Russian and is spoke with a Russian accent unless noted.

Yuri Kuscov: (with mild fear) I just noticed counterspy Kreggs enter here.
Kev Marink: (with similar concern) That makes two in the last hour. Conté from the DGER and now Kreggs from the KGB. I wonder if we have been compromised.
Vladmir Kruschev: (with an slight British accent) Ah, Kev. Both you and the Walloon fear too much. I have confidence in my superiors. Each of you just play your role and it will work out
(a waiter approaches. He has red hair and a strong chin)
Waiter: Another rum for you, Comrade?
Vladmir: (appearing unprepared) Da. Maybe one more.
(The waiter eyes all of those at the table and leaves)
Kev: OK , Yuri. 17:45. It's time we start this.
(Kev and Yuri get up and leave the table)
Vladmir: (quietly to himself, in English) God help me. I hope this works.
(Vladmir gets up and leaves. Lights dim and open up again on a hallway.)

Scene 2 A dank, poorly light hallway with Communist graffiti on the walls. There is one door marked as a bathroom. Kev and Yuri walk down the hall, followed eventually by Vladmir who goes into the bathroom.

Scene 3 The Bathroom. Vladmir goes to a sink and pulls a small packet from the sole of his shoe. He begins to inspect its contents. Unbeknownst to him, Conté emerges from a stall behind him.
Conté: I see MI6 is still using the old SIS issue.
Vladmir: (not surprised) Conté, what would you know about old SIS issue?
Conté: I know that it is inferior to DGER. And please, Robert, here in Russia my name is Kuzalev. Why must you be so harsh with me? We are both after the same goal against the Communist International.
Vladmir: Come now, my dear frog. Both of us know that the DGER is incompetent and would probably lose the package if it received it. We will see who is victorious in the end. Rest assure that the Comintern will not have a beneficial meeting. Oh, and here's a tip: Kreggs is here.
(Vladmir leaves the bathroom, followed by the search light through the hall. Conté remains, slightly astonished)

Act 2 Scene 1 The upper dining room: More elegantly decorated, which is an overstatement. The room is crowded with men, many with hammer-and-sickle insignias. A man with a military officer's uniform addresses a group of men including Yuri, the bartender and the waiter. He is Karl Bolmarx.
Bolmarx: They had the best olives at Anzio. That and the success of the Party made my trip worthwhile.
A man in the group: Comrade Colonel, I would like to present to you the leader of the Belgian Communist Party.
(Yuri moves forward and Bolmarx moves to greet him revealing an armored suitcase behind him)
Yuri: Comrade Colonel, it is a pleasure to meet the mastermind behind the victorious Comintern. Your skillful influence has greatly increased support for the Party in my nation.
Bolmarx: Thank you Comrade. Come now, it is necessary that you give us your information about the potential of the Comintern in Belgium. You must sign the register Comrade.
(Yuri and Bolmarx move to enter a back room. Yuri enters with Bolmarx's briefcase, but Bolmarx is stopped by Kev who motions him to have a private conversation. Conté pops in behind Kev unnoticed and moves toward the backroom)

Scene 2 The backroom: a simple room with a table, with a paper on it. There is a closet on one wall. Yuri enters and proceeds to knock on the door of the closet. Vladmir comes out of the closet
Vladmir: (whispering): All set. Kev'll give us two minute max.
Yuri: (opening the briefcase) Then let's get this done with.
(They both stare at the briefcase, and look surprised)
Yuri: Wait, where is the list? Where's the Comintern list?
Vladmir: (beginning to panic) I dunno. I dunno. Here close this up and . . .
Conté: (Busting into the room and pretending to be drunk) Victory for the Party, Comrades, join me. (He proceeds to the two spies and speaks quietly) Kreggs just walked in.
Vladmir: We don't need your help. You took the list didn't you.
Conté: Well, no...(He is rushed by a bunch of drunken Russians, who cheer, Comrades)
(The waiter enters, followed by Bolmarx and Kev, who is pushed aside by Kreggs)
Kreggs: Cease Comrades! Look, the Comintern list is missing. There are foreigners among us.
Waiter: (speaking up) Comrade, I have overheard this one here speaking of espionage. (He points towards Conté)
(Kreggs moves to Conté and rips the sleeve of his shirt exposing a tattoo on Conté's bicep)
Kev: (Trying to cover for Conté) Comrade counterspy, that's just the insignia of the Party.
(Kreggs rubs the tattoo off, revealing a fleur-de-lis tattoo)
A man in the crowd: (astonished) The fleur-de-lis!
Kreggs: Do not be fooled by tattoos comrades. This one be from the DGER. Comrade Colonel, Move everyone downstairs and call the Ninth Directorate. This one is bound to have accomplices and I will find them.

(The scene shifts to the hallway, down which the crowd is rushed. As Vladmir, the first of the group enters the downstairs bar, a gunshot is heard upstairs)

Scene 3 The Bar
(People mill around with a tense sense around the crowd)
Kev: (talking to Yuri and Vladmir) They will suspect everybody. Hopefully Yuri and I are on good enough standing not to be questions.
Yuri: (panicked) Kreggs called for the Ninth Directorate, the State Guards.
Vladmir: Patience, Yuri. Stay to your cover. More importantly now, we have to find out who took the list. It wasn't Conté. He intended to take it from us.
(The waiter walks by)
Kev: Vlad, that waiter. I noticed something about him. He's Irish.
Vladmir: Irish? What action would they want with this? I will talk to him. Both of you fan out and see if there are any others.
(The three split up into separate directions)

(The focus shifts to Kev, who is talking to the bartender)
Kev: A white Russian please.
Bartender: Is that what you want?
Kev: No, that is what I want you to be. White, truthful. I am form the Second Directorate. I am working with Kreggs. Do you suspect anyone as a spy?
Bartender: That tall one, there. (Pointing at Vladmir) He spoke with a slight Anglo accent. Those others maybe.

(The focus now shifts to Vladmir and the waiter)
Vladmir: Treason season started early this year, eh Catholic? Where is the list? I know that you have it.
Waiter: Comrade, I have no idea what you are speaking of.
Vladmir: Do you not? Let me tell you this. A great many more of you IRA scum will shed their blood if it is discovered that you do indeed have the list.
Waiter: (Unshakable) You are drunk Comrade. Stop raving.

(All of a sudden, State Guards bust in the room)
Guard Sergeant: Comrades! Silence! All against that wall.
(Kreggs comes in now)
Kreggs: The Comintern list was not on that traitor. Comrades, speak out. Who here is a spy? Who here is defying the State?
A man: Comrade Kreggs, I know who the spies are.
Another man: No, Comrade. I know.
(The men begin to rush Kreggs, screaming "I know Comrade")
Guard Sergeant: Cease. Back on the wall. (He shoots a shot in the air)
(Order is restored)
Kreggs: You two there, come with me. I will talk to you in private and I will address the rest of you later. (Kreggs and the two men leave. The bar room becomes enveloped in discussion. The spotlight moves from one group of people to another)

A man: (addressing another with panic in his voice) Who do think the spies are? I certainly didn't steal the list. They couldn't possibly suspect me.
Another man: (attempting to remain out of trouble) Don't talk to me. I am a loyal Communist. I love the Party. No one will suspect me.

(The Guard Sergeant addresses the Colonel)
Sergeant: Comrade Colonel, There are spies among us. Do you remember anyone or anything suspicious?
Colonel: These are all foreigners. There is always suspicion. The French representative was peculiar. The North Korean war rep appeared strange to me. And that leader of the Belgian Party was with the briefcase when the list was discovered missing.
Sergeant: He was there when it was lost? Very peculiar.

(A man approaches Kev and Vladmir)
Man: (frightened) Comrades, certainly you will put a good word in for me if you are interviewed. You know as all do that I love the party.
Kev: Comrade, we know that all here should be loyal to the party.
Man: (desperately) Da, Comrade. And I am, I am. You can trust that.
Vladmir: (calmly) Faith, faith Comrade. Kreggs is reliable. He probably already killed the spy up in the dining room.
(The desperate man leaves)
Vladmir: (worried, and beginning to lose his accent) Kev, This is beginning to worry me. One of them had to have seen me with Yuri in the Back Room, with the briefcase. They will surely suspect me.
Kev: (composed) Keep your cool, Vlad. Maintain your cover. Your accent is slipping. I built a reliable reputation with the Colonel. I can protect you.
Vladmir: What about Yuri? Certainly he will be suspected.
Kev: I don't know. I sent him to try to find out who was suspected.
Vladmir: And that Irish waiter, do you think he got the list before we did? Certainly it would be useful as a negotiation tool for the IRA.
Kev: Well, I found out that . . . (Yuri rushes in on them in a panic)
Yuri: (panicked)Vlad, Kev. They are going to suspect me. The Colonel told me so. That second man pointed me out. We have to get out of here.
Kev: No, first we have to find the list. Our mission will not fail.
Yuri: (desperate and panicked) They will suspect me. I've got to leave. (Now in Belgian French) They are going to shoot me.
Vladmir: Stop! You're blowing your cover.
(Kreggs returns without anyone else)
Kreggs: I have heard the suspicions of my fellow Comrades and I am aware of who the spies are. (The room begins to fill with Ninth Directorate guards) It is pitiful that any of you would have the nerve to test my capabilities with such a rudimentary piece of thievery. Guards! Arrest them!
(The guards rush the crowd who fight back and yell "No Comrade! I am innocent! Not me!" Kev, Yuri and Vlad are pushed back as night sticks are raised and lowered on their heads. Kreggs leaves out of the door)

Scene 4 Outside. It is dark with one light from the front of the bar.
(Kreggs exits the bar)
Kreggs: Nothing like a little conspiracy to disrupt a stable Party and give us reason to suspect the foreigners. (He removes a piece of paper from his greatcoat) Headquarters will keep this list until we can plant it on some foreign agent.
(Out of the darkness, a man clubs Kreggs. He picks up the piece of paper. He is the Irish waiter from the bar)
Waiter: The British Crown will pay a hefty amount for this information. The IRA will have its day. Our brothers of the Easter Rebellion will be avenged.
