Frieze!

The Friezes are patterns that can be extended in one direction, usually horizontally, but they don't have to be. To make a frieze, you just use any image, and then simply repeat it in one of several ways.

There are only seven different types of frieze possible, depending on how you decide to repeat your image.

Here are a few examples illustrating each of the seven different frieze types

The image has just been translated along the frieze
frieze1

The image has been reflected across a line that is perpendicular to the frieze
frieze2

The image has been reflected across a line that is parallel to the frieze
frieze3

The image has been rotated 180 degrees, ie a two-fold rotation
frieze4

The image has been rotated 180 degrees, then it gets reflected across a line perpendicular to the frieze, then it gets rotated again. It's kind of like a sine wave.
frieze5

The image gets reflected in a line parallel to the frieze, and it also gets translated along at the same time. This is known as a Glide Reflection. Look at footprints in the snow or the sand, to see this type of pattern.
frieze6

The image has been reflected in a line parallel to the frieze, and also in a line perpendicular to the frieze. Imagine a mirror running horizontally down the middle of the frieze, and also vertically at both edges of each of the motifs.
