Ronnie and Buzz's Canada and Seattle Trip

August 26th Seattle

Left Hotel with our friend Julia Graves, who took us for a tour of Whidbey Island. We took a ferry from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island then Rt. 525 around the island. Good ride lots to see. Stop at Langley for lunch. Rt. 5 back to Seattle. Drinks at Julia's and Ron's home before heading for biker bar in Old Town. 200 miles nice day

August 27th

Took ferry to Bainbridge Island on the Olympic Peninsula. Road Rt. 305 to Paulsboro Rt. 3 then 104 to 101 into Port Angeles. Nice ride but too much traffic. Stayed in town at Best Western, rode up to Hurricane ridge, pretty and twisty ride where they still had an area with 20 ft. of snow. Dinner at the waterfront on the Pier, Down Riggers, nice restaurant.

August 28th

8:00am departure to Crescent Lake. Good ride cold morning very pretty lake. Then back to Port Angeles for another ferry ride to Victoria B.C. This ride is 1 1/2 hours of very cold weather. It was fun on the ferry with other bikers and customs was no hassle. Rode into Victoria checked into Hotel. Nice town to walk around but VERY TOURISTY.

August 30th

Rode up Trans Canada 1 to Nanaimo. Cute Village! Took Ferry from Duke Point to Tswassen, Vancouver. Bad choice should have taken Nanaimo Ferry letting us out on the North side of town instead of the South. Rained, so we went to Harley dealer and Ronnie bought new leathers for the rest of the trip.

August 31st

Off to Whistler and the mountains , Rt. 99N, a beautiful road and wonderful views of lakes and mountains. Stopped at a little town ,Squamish for a drink on route to our Hotel in Whistler Village. Nice Ski Village fun place to stay. Our friends from Park City,Ut arrived the next day with their Harleys. 130 miles

September 2nd

Whistler to Kamloops Rt. 99 to Lilleot where we had lunch at a little Greek restaurant. Fabulous ride through twisty mountain roads with very diverse scenery. We went from mountains to arid Arizona type landscape. Great ride 180 miles

September 3rd

Kamloops to Kelowna(The long way) 46 degrees when we left, stopped at Harley dealer then continued on to Rt. 5 though the mountains where we picked up Rt. 8 then backroads past ranches and farms. Once again totally different landscape. Great road. Stopped at Spences Bridge for lunch.(don't) Then we picked up Trans Canada 1, more mountains dense with trees riding along the Thompson River rapids down to Rt. 3 where we ran along the Washington State border to Princeton. Turned north on Rt. 3a ran along Okanagan Lake beautiful ride, arriving at a very nice Comfort Suites in Kelowna. 358 miles

September 4th

Kelowna to Glacier National Park, Rogers Pass 46 degrees and raining. Stopped in the Harley Store where I bought a pair of chaps. We went up Rt. 97 to Rt. 97a through lots of small towns with lots of traffic. Nice ride but not great. Lunch at Siegamous not to be remembered then on to Revelstroke in the cold drizzle. Nice old town with a beautiful view as we were in the Columbia Mountain range. At the top, Roger's Pass we came upon a Great Western Lodge and stopped for the night. Wonderful ambiance, great views of the Glaciers and a cozy bar with a fireplace. 190 miles. Attended a short slide show at the museum that night on the history of Rogers Pass.

September 5th

Sunday Rogers Pass to Lake Louise 46 degrees and rain Trans Canada 1 east to Yoho National Park beautiful ride we stopped at Emerald Lake Lodge for lunch, which was very pretty even though we saw it through heavy rain. Then on to Lake Louise where we stayed in the comfortable Lake Louise Inn. 110 miles

September 6th

Lake Louise to Jasper, Alberta 38 Degrees and overcast This a spectacular road called The Ice Fields Parkway a must see ride. You are surrounded by lakes and mountains with glaciers and snow. We stopped at the Columbia Icefields where we took a snowcat ride. On to Jasper Lake Lodge, a five star resort. Elk strolled around the grounds. We had a very nice dinner in one of their 6 restaurants. 130 miles

September 7th

Jasper to Radium Springs Great ride back down the Ice Fields Parkway a must see stop at Athabasca Falls. We picked up Rt. 93a just north of Banff and through Kootenay Nat'l Park a magnificent ride through the mountains to Radium Hot Springs. We stayed at the lodge where we had a wonderful dinner. Into the Hot Springs at 10:00 that night , a bit disappointing, since it was a big pool with tons of people. About 200 miles

September 8th

Radium Springs to Banff We said goodbye to our friends from Utah and went back up 93a to Banff in a cool crisp clear day. Lovely town where we toured and went to Minnewanka a beautiful lake and took the time in the afternoon to wash the Harley. Great Chinese dinner and off to bed. 82 miles

September 9th

Banff to Nelson B.C. 38 degrees when we left but warmed through the day. Trans 1 to 93a back through Radium Springs 95 to Fairmont Springs where we had lunch. Stopped at the Harley dealer in Cranbrook, an uninteresting town ,then picked up route 3. The ride had many faces this time from beautiful green mountains and forests to stark towns then mountains again. As we wound our way back up to Nelson after skirting the states on Rt. 3 we ran into magnificent scenery and stopped in a small town called Salmo, known for their stone wall murals. A must stop had fun and drank a beer at local salon. Then on to Nelson. We stayed at the fabulous Prestige Lake Inn which sits on the bank of Lake Kootenay. Great place and a fun town. 328 miles

September 10th

Went for a ride up Rt. 3 to Kaslo, a cute one street town, where we had a great lunch while we waited out a wild storm that came out of nowhere. This is a great bike riding road with lots of twisty turns and up and down hills lots of fun. Rode back to Nelson, dinner and bedtime. 90 miles

September 11th

Nelson B.C. to Whitefish, Montana Time to leave Canada. Back up Rt. 3, great ride to the ferry until a Canadian Mounty caught up with me and gave me a warning for speeding. Then on to the ferry at Balfour. This is the longest free ferry in Canada. A beautiful ferry ride to the east side of Lake Kootenay to Crawford. This road to Creston must not be missed, lots of switchbacks and great elevation changes all along the lake. Take your time to get it all in. We crossed the border at Porthill, Idaho. Then, an absolutely beautiful ride down Rt. 21 to Rt. 2 on to Kallispell and Whitefish, Montana. We stayed at the top of Big Mountain at the Kandahar Lodge, wonderful atmosphere with fireplace and all the trimmings including a marvelous restaurant. 270 miles

September 12th

Whitefish to Glacier Nat'l Park This has been our dream to ride the Highway to the Sun though the park. And this road did not disappoint. The ride is about 45 miles and must be seen both ways. Outstanding mountains, lakes and glaciers. This road twists and turns through the most beautiful country we have seen yet The route can be seen in one day and should not be missed. Back to Whitefish to a Very Nice Quality Inn.

September 13th

Toured Big Mountain and washed the Harley. Nice day off Sept 14th Left Whitefish on Rt. 93 to Rt. 35 then Rt.83 a very nice ride down the west side of Glacier Natl Park mountains. A lot of nice little towns including Seely Lake a very nice stop for a drink and wander around. Then on to Butte Mt. picking up Rt. 200 to I 90. Eventhough this is a super highway, it was a great ride with lots of lovely scenery to see. We made a stop at Deer Lodge to see the Montana State Prison and car Museum. This was a fun stop, then on to our final destination Butte, Mt., we dropped our Ultra Classic off at Saints Harley for its trip home. Very nice accommodating people.
